My wife picked up Abraham Lincoln Versus Zombies from the rental box the other day after we talked about Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer and I must say it was wonderfully bad in all the right ways. Of course, we're the sort that appreciate terrible movies so... yeah, we're okay with this.

I accidentally ordered 28 days with Sandra Bullock in instead of 28 Days Later. Does that count?

I swung by the local RedBox while walking my dog last night, and saw this was already out:

ecx.images-amazon.com

From what I read online, she's not even the main character. Some dude named Super Cloud is, and she's never referred to as "The Brave" in the film. They just found some no-budget CGI cartoon from overseas that had a redhead in a Middle Ages setting, slapped her on the cover and changed the name.

The time will come when SyFy's TV schedule is comprised of nothing but those horrible low-grade monster films.

And it will be a glorious time.

FTA: That's why the Asylum is sending a small crew to Cambodia to shoot what could be the hottest drafting opportunity title of the holiday season: "Age of the Hobbits."

Age of the Hobbits? Considering how protective the Tolkien Estate is, how is this even being considered much less made?

The Blockbuster (when those existed) that was near us had about 4 or 5 copies of Transmorphers back when it was big. We couldn't believe that 3 of them were out for rental (all the Transformers ones were gone too)

This has been rampant outside the US. The video rental places in Japan have walls of US releases where you have the big budget hollywood film right next to it's low budget knock-off with a VERY similar box cover.

Oh and I'm sure they'll blame internet piracy for this too.

I got tricked by a movie at Blockbuster called THE Sling Blade. But the "the" in the title was purposely tiny. I threw in in the DVD player and had my WTF moment. I took it back and Blockbuster wouldn't refund my money or allow me to pick a different movie. Their argument was that the movie was only out a couple of months prior and I shouldn't have expected it to be on DVD already. I never went back.

Wellllll... if the Shat was narrating the actual "true story" of Puss in Boots, that is, the story codified into canon by Perrault, then I can't get too upset. Although the movie was entertaining, and Banderas does a nice job of voice acting, Puss was not a Spanish swordsman, he was a clever French cat who wheeled and dealed to get his young, penniless master a princess in marriage and a kingdom as well.

I wonder how big the mistaken-movie market is. It's difficult to imagine that the profits from bungling renters are robust enough to keep the copycats in business, but it appears that's the case. Who knew?

I cant tell you how many times I did an exchange/refund for "Battle OF Los Angeles" when I was working at a video store. I had like 5 copies of the film and it came out on DVD the DAY Battle: Los Angeles was released in theatres.

I informed the people who thought it was the theatre version that it wasnt, but some people didnt ask. Naturally they all came back later and were irritated. This was like that for about a month. I even asked if we could get a 'shelf talker' (marketing on the shelf) that said something like "Check out the latest film from Asylum Entertainment!" so people could maybe get the hint, but no go.Most of their 'mockbusters' are at least slightly differently named, like "Almighty THOR' for example, but yeah, please everyone, read the box. At least look at it, read the back and if its got the Asylum/SyFy logo, chances are youre going to hate it unless you actively look for that kind of movie.

Heh. When I worked at Blockbuster many moons ago we had a family who wanted this movie:

www.freecodesource.com

But the movie actually behind the display box was:

awesomebmovies.com

I can only imagine the kiddy's reactions.

"Mommy, why is that man in the snake jacket bashing that man's head into the floor? And where are the diving horses?"

My seven-year old son watched Chop Kick Panda on Netflix and loved it. He understands perfectly well what it's ripping off, he recognizes when they lift lines from Star Wars, he made mocking comments at the worst moments, and appreciates it for the cheaply-made badly-animated knockoff that it is. Then he insisted on watching it again. I've never felt prouder of my parenting.

/Redbox, by the way, need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror and ask how they feel about knowingly participating in ripping off their customers.
//And if they feel OK about it, at least ask themselves whether it's a good business strategy

Why does it not occur to people that the movie that is currently a major release in theaters will probably not also be on the rental shelves? I remember when Titanic was big in the theater. I worked in a video store and people would come back in absolutely livid because they'd just rented one of the many related tapes that were opportunistically out put out at the same time and they couldn't believe it wasn't the Cameron movie. National Geographic's Secrets of the Titanic, etc.

BizarreMan: Apparently the rental outlets don't care about having pissed off customers because they were conned into renting the wrong movie.

how is it a con? are these knock-off titles misrepresenting something?

Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies is not Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
American Warships is not Battleship
Kiara: The Brave is not Brave
Chop Kick Panda is not Kung Fu Panda
The Day the Earth Stopped is not The Day the Earth Stood Still...

Those movie companies are not committing any type of fraud, what is on those disks is what is says in the descriptions of those movies.

what if Redbox advertised those b-movie knock offs as, "If you can't afford, or are unable, or hate going to the theater to see XYZ on its opening weekend... why not pick up XXYZ today. It's not the big-budget Hollywood release, but it only costs $1.20 and the same basic storyline is followed."?

Would that help you in deciding if you were going to rent it or not?

When you rent the DVD at Redbox, it gives you the description of the movie as you are adding it to your cart, in that description, you'll probably also see information such as actors, director, studio, release date...

If you're incapable of discerning a major Hollywood release from a B-movie knockoff, then don't take your frustration out on the call center employee at Redbox.

Her scene of gratutious topless fanservice was the best part of the movie, but it was no 'snake killing a couple midflight in the Mile-High Club'.

Battle of Los Angeles, released at the same time as Battle Los Angeles. I'm OK with it because A) the movie it ripped off was also a stinker and B) Nia Peeples is damn hot.
