The owener of the van was a man named James Belmont.

Well obviously this was the work of Dracula getting in some revenge on his family.

Curious: one reason to not own a stick shift.

Or simply a good reason not to leave the car in gear when it's parked.

they fail to mention the Vanagon had gone on a rash of petty thefts over the past few weeks. sad to see a good pop-top go bad.

How often do cars catch fire where you live?
And just how bad is your parking brake?

Yeah, but then brake will fail and people will still be unhappy.

My car will not allow you to remove the key unless the gearbox is in reverse.

I was overhearing the news one day, and after a traffic jam on the freeway, a house fire, and other typical Breaking News, I said "all they need is a car on fire." Within the next hour, TWO cars burst into flame in the middle of the freeway traffic jam. It was a hot day, probably a factor.

I much, much prefer to select my trashy content from the calm, passive environment of the WWW. I haven't turned on a TV in years, and now they drive me nuts. Besides, they feature the same stories as FARK, but first tease you for 20 minutes before showing the bullshiat of the day.

So, how do cars with automatic transmissions cope with a failure of the parking pawl?

Serious question by the way; I'm 33 years old and I only know about 3 people who have driven cars with automatic transmission.

Or simply a good reason not to leave the car in gear when it's parked.

You leave your car in gear when it's parked so it doesn't run away in the case of handbrake failure.

Sounds like a Saab?

The Volkswagen was merely doing the owner a service.

I don't think that's the proper use of of the term hara-kiri, unless the VW got up on it's rear tires and gutted it's engine compartment with a stop sign.

The irony of this is so amazing.

In general, it doesn't happen. A parking pawl is a much more serious bit of kit than most car's handbrake cables, and even compared to the compression of an engine keeping an in-gear manual car it's probably stronger. I say this as an owner of a 4-banger stickshift car that once managed to escape its parking space and move ten feet or so while still in gear.

If you do break the parking pawl somehow, you still have a handbrake. Repairs usually are up there with a transmission rebuild though since you have to take apart a lot. Thankfully you usually have to do something stupid repeatedly like putting it in park while moving.
