Conspiracy me says this is perfect for creating the necessary excuse for a NATO mission to get Syria to knock this shiat off and do so without a Security Council veto.

Yeah - why else would they hang a 50+ year-old aircraft out in Syrian missile range?

Interesting game changer.

Maybe the reason they apologized so fast.

Well, this aircraft isn't likely to be 50+ years old. More like 25-30 with newer advanced avionics.

Super conspiracy says the CIA and Syrian Free Army took over the station to fire on it. Normal border patrols probably take them into missile range.

30+ years old. They stopped building them in '79.

This thread is starting off a bit Truther-y. People are still trying to sort things out. If a NATO plane get shot down, I would expect NATO to discuss it. One plane in questionable circumstances isn't going to be a reason to go full blown NATO invasion of Syria. Now, it may lead to tightening the screws on Syria, bombing a thing or two, or setting up some sort of zone on the Turkish-Syrian border (all of which is/was likely even without this incident).

The Syrian government has claimed they did it, so I doubt it was the Syrian opposition. They COULD just be saying that to try to hide that they don't have complete control over their own territory, but that wouldn't be the smartest move as Turkey is going to take pretty seriously Syria admitting they shot down a Turkish plane.

I don't think any government is excited about or itching to get heavily involved on the ground in Syria. Many governments would love to see Assad and his Iran leaning government go (all Sunni Arab governments, pretty much all of NATO), but at most I would say the Obama Administration might support a Libya style action, and even that is questionable after the mess that's happened on the ground in Libya since the fall of the previous regime.

See, now that's the voice of reason right there. Nothing got real, and nothing truly major is going to happen because of this one incident.

FTA: The plane was participating in a test of Turkey's national radar system.

Sounds to me more like they were testing Syria's radar system, and that it passed with flying colors, much to the dismay of the Turks...

We could have done the same to Iraq without even bothering with claims of WMDs. They spent years shooting at our planes patrolling the no-fly zone.

True, but try as we might, we could coerce them into actually hitting our planes.

The base airframe of the aircraft may be from 79 but it's no doubt been rehabbed at least 2 times, refurbished / new electronics ejection seats etc etc. Not to mention nice second hand Russian / French weapon systems.

As for where they were shot down, Turkey is in the wrong. Regardless of the whacky state of Syrian affairs if you are flying in the wrong airspace ... it's your fault.

2012-06-24 01:49:50 PM
The plane was participating in a test of Turkey's national radar system, Davutoglu said.

Sounds like it was also participating in a test of Syria's national radar system... Also, it sounds like it was brought down by flak. If you're close enough to enemy flak to catch a round, you are where you should not be.

Turkish F4 driver puts the plane onto Auto pilot headed to syria bails out halfway there. The F4, now basically a "target drone" gets shot down, things escalate etc.

The best thing? Turkey is out only one fighter plane that had it's heyday half a century ago.

vygramul: Yeah - why else would they hang a 50+ year-old aircraft out in Syrian missile range?

Well, let's see.

1) Turkey borders Syria, so huge chunks of Turkish airspace and Turkey-adjacent international airspace is in Syrian missile range.

2) The F-4 is the only non-UAV recon plane Turkey has in its inventory.

So, my guess for the "why" here is, "Because they do aerial reconnaissance."

You forgot a couple of key letters in your post, and just because they have bad aim doesn't make it any less an act of war.
