I guess +1 for subby for not using the usual "Sherrif Joe is a a-- hole" Fark headline.

Does seem future inmates will not be happy w Tent City

I was hoping someone in the crowd would have a sign demanding Arpaio's birth certificate.

You know what scares me about tent city? People live in AZ and commit crimes KNOWING tent city exists.

Personally, I would have thought having a 'tent city' would be a deterrent to committing crimes in AZ. Obviously, there are an excessive amount of stupid criminals (redundancy intended) living in AZ. If I ever had to live in tent city, then got out, I would make DAMN sure I would commit crimes in some other state.

It seems like he will never leave his position unless he dies. But it seems like the majority of voters in that area want him as Sheriff, so I don't see what the problem is. Are many of those protesters actually registered to vote? I can't understand why one of the most controversial officials in the U.S. hasn't been voted out yet.

I work for a different Arizona law enforcement agency and beleive that Arpiao is wrong most of the time and that he is too old to remain sheriff, but tent city is one of his good ideas that actually works. The tents are no different that those our service men and women live in in Afghanistan. During the day, the inmates can go into the air conditioned day room. Jail is not supposed to be fun.

Couldn't he still be sheriff even if he were born in Kenya?

Many of the people living in the "tent city" have been convicted of no crime.

"We are with you," protesters chanted in both English and Spanish, in hopes that inmates could hear them.
"Until we get tired and go back to our air-conditioned homes to have a nice dinner and sleep in a real bed." Not quite chant material.

Organizers say conditions at "Tent City" complex are inhumane. The sheriff has said he doesn't see any problems with housing inmates in tents and often points out that some members of the U.S. military live in tents.

Not for any long term housing the military doesn't.

And issues of whether this is inhumane aside, I think the bigger issue I think would be security. How do you separate and protect prisoners from each other when all you are working with tent flaps? At the very least, I would think having walls would mean needing fewer staff.

So basically the protesters just caused the inmates to lose visitation privileges for the day. Well done protesters, well done.

So, what are they protesting exactly, free elections? Remember kids it's easier to be a slacktivist protester than to work within a system to hold a meaningful discourse about issues and come up with a feasible plan for change. Protest on Slacktivists!

Sheriff Joe should be the only resident of Tent City. In his case, the tent should be inside the Artic Circle..

As I understand the tent city, it's only volunteers serving sentences who are there. Anyone held because they can't make bail isn't in tent city. Anyone elderly or with medical issues isn't in tent city.

I have huge problems with Sheriff Joe. Hes my sheriff, and i get to vote against him.. which i do. Count me in the anyone but Joe camp.. but my problems with him aren't with how he runs the jail. Im totally fine with the tents, the pink undies, the baloney sandwiches.. all thats fine. I think its not much more than theater, but its fine. My problem with Sheriff Joe is that hes an attention whore who spends more time concocting ways to get on TV than he does doing his job. We don't need a celebrity sheriff. Also, hes completely corrupt, he uses county resources to go after political opponents, and its not even subtle he does it right out in the open, cause he knows he has the vote of all the blue hairs and old dudes. Ill be happy the day he kicks the bucket.. cant be too far away now.. hes what? 80? and that seems to be the only way we will get rid of him.

Amen, brother.

If you think Joe Arpaio is corrupt, just look into the US Senate seat held by Barry Goldwater and John McCain. Do the words "Mafia...murder...convicted felon owning a liquor distributorship...Don Bolles...Joe Bonano...Kemper Marley...dog racing..." mean anything to you?

Everyone...EVERYONE...in Arizona politics is dirty but there is dirty and then there is stink so bad that upwind only means the big chunks of shiat miss you.

One thing to keep in mind is that 'deter' doesn't mean 'eliminate'. Without some extensive study and investigation you have no idea how many crimes didn't happen because there are tents in the desert, just as you don't know how many people weren't murdered because there's a death penalty.

You're right, he will retain his position until he dies or is killed. Most people (even in Phoenix) don't go to jail and most aren't immigrants, so you have scores of people who just shrug and say, "He says what he thinks."
No he doesn't. He says what will continue to get him elected.
He also jails journalists without cause, uses resources to harass political opponents, sends his buddies to suites on Coronado island for "training", zip-ties mexicans without cause, fails to investigate hundreds of reported sexual abuse cases in areas he won't win, and grandstands on a platform of cruelty disguised as machismo.
I could point specifics to my co-worker all day and when it comes time to vote, he will still choose that dip-stick because it doesn't effect him. And, "Well he says what he thinks."
He won't refute a single thing and put a check by his name.
Sheriff Joke will continue until the day he dies, because most people are not outwardly effected by his lunacy and he provides the comfort of a sticky electric blanket.
Hooray, complacency.

Hmmmmmm...The term "jail" actually means a place where folks convicted of misdemeanors are warehoused, but it is also a place for folks awaiting trial.

Let's have a laugh and suppose for a second that Joe really believes in the phrase "innocent until proven guilty". He is, after all, practically a super-hero when it comes to making sure Obama's qualifications are constitutionally valid. Why would he put innocent people in a tent city in AZ in the summer?

REAL criminals get A/C.
