Where does one get a "donor card?" The DMV? A hospital?
I think I should carry one. How about you?

2003-11-12 03:15:37 AM
I think you should carry one, too...

2003-11-12 03:34:20 AM
A new abstraction of Darwin! The weaker ones serve as the stronger ones' organ farms. Genius...

2003-11-12 03:47:55 AM
You can download an organ donation card from here Organ Donor. Pretty much the best thing you can do with your already dead, and soon to be rotting carcass.

2003-11-12 03:52:03 AM
Can you donate your body to the Dog Food industry?!?!

2003-11-12 05:08:31 AM
Thanks, ToxicGardener. Hopefully I'll have a few parts that aren't completely worn out by the time I buy the farm.

2003-11-12 05:42:14 AM
I remember reading about this (on FARK no less), when the kid died. I'm glad his family got some closure. Deciding to donate organs is a really really tough call for a parent, or anyone to make, especially since the decision has to be made so quickly after the loss.

2003-11-12 05:49:30 AM
I wonder what happens to your carcass after they rip off every usable organ? Are you all hollow and stuff? That would be a horrible sight at your funeral... mmmmmmmmm.......... or if you believe in afterlife, you might need it.

(Trying to discourage the donor card)

2003-11-12 05:52:09 AM
So it was all for the best, then. Skateboard-bashing should clearly be encouraged!

2003-11-12 05:56:54 AM
I think it is the greatest idea ever, donate everything donateable, your dead, you don't need it any more. Never understand why peoples families object to this.

2003-11-12 06:00:06 AM
you guys got a florida tag, when is there going to be an 'america' tag for all the stupid shiat that happens in your dumb assed filled country... oh wait that would mean mainly america tags on fark....

-marshmallows are ready.....

2003-11-12 06:00:08 AM
i really dont think my body will have any usable organs left when i die, but feel free to browse and take what you need.
psst- take the liver and lungs for a good buzz.

2003-11-12 06:00:42 AM
I'm taking everything with me. Nobody's getting my organs.

You people do know that ability to pay is one of the criteria for getting an organ transplant, right? A friend of my father's got a kidney transplant. 10 years later, the kidney was doing badly, and he died because his business had been financially ruined and he couldn't get the cash for a new kidney.

2003-11-12 06:07:34 AM
I just printed out my donor card. That story really got to me :(

I have decided to donate everything! Well everything except for my big wang. No matter what happens, that stays with me ;)

2003-11-12 06:08:01 AM
Here's hoping the organs of the dead kid don't carry with them some freakish trait that causes the possessor of said organs to dare others to bash blunt objects into their skulls...

what a great horror/sci-fi movie idea...

2003-11-12 06:09:40 AM
My remarks could be taken out of context......

the stupid shiat = kid asking someone to hit him with a skateboard

the good shiat = sharing your organs with them that need it after death

so to recap

stupid = hit me with skateboard
good = donate organs or beer credits

2003-11-12 06:10:59 AM
Hmmm, no genes are getting passed on here so I guess Darwin strikes again...unless the girl goes on to have kids and then dies an unbelieveably stupid death, only time will tell.

2003-11-12 06:11:37 AM
gromky:- So you think your dad's friend should have been denied the original organ too?

I think it's amazingly selfish not to want the chance to save lives at no cost to yourself.

You have a medical system that you have to pay for. That's how it works. If you want a socialised medical system, move elsewhere.

2003-11-12 06:12:51 AM
The most important thing you can do towards being an organ donor is to tell whoever will be in charge of you when you're dead (parents, spouse, etc) that you want to be one. They're the ones who will have to sign the form to hand over your kibbles and bits.

2003-11-12 06:13:39 AM
I was tempted to say something horrible about the little girl deserving them more than the testosterone-poisoned idiot who decided to give them up on a dare, but I realized I don't need to join the express train to hell.

2003-11-12 06:14:57 AM
I think I've already put too much mileage on my organs for them to be of use to anyone, but if they want 'em they can have 'em (just wait 'til I'm finished with them first!).

Too bad I've destroyed my vital organs by smoking.

Here in oz we just have it marked on our drivers license. There are a few different catagories such as heart and lungs, liver, kidney, eyes or the whole lot. I am going for everything. I don't needed them. Its good to know that even when i die I can help some one else live. My mate had a liver transplant and has given him a new lease on life.

Dunno if they'll want my liver. I think that will be the only bit left of me.

2003-11-12 06:34:41 AM
Don't take your organs to heaven!
Heaven knows we need them here!

2003-11-12 06:35:12 AM
So the fact that not every deserving person that needs organs gets them is an reason not to give them to anybody?

Interesting argument gromky. You sound like a delightful fellow.

2003-11-12 06:38:00 AM
The fewer organs a zombie has, the easier it is to set on fire.

2003-11-12 06:40:28 AM
I have one organ I'm willing to lease out to the female population even before I die. (har har! I'm so funny)

That said, I don't know how big a problem organ shortage is in this country, but if it is, how about some tax breaks for signing up at the DMV?

2003-11-12 06:45:38 AM
The irony of all this is that at one time consumer advocacy groups actually believed skateboards to be dangerous and now look they're saving lives. Aside from a small technical issue I see no problems here.

2003-11-12 06:45:42 AM
Skateboards are for riding, you farking moron. Kids need to learn.

2003-11-12 06:45:47 AM
el yotcho:- I know I have no shortage of organ.

(just continuing the theme)

2003-11-12 06:48:30 AM
I have a donor card and my entire family are all clear about my intentions. If I'm unlucky enough to die early then I want to help someone else.

I just have two reservations:

1) If I go early it will most likely be in a high speed, ugly RTA and I'm not sure what they'll get back!
2) My liver and kidneys are already shot!

Well now I have a problem:

Q. Can I be an organ and tissue donor and also donate my body to medical science?

A. Total body donation is an option, but not if you choose to be an organ and tissue donor. If you wish to donate your entire body, you should directly contact the facility of your choice to make arrangements. Medical schools, research facilities and other agencies need to study bodies to gain greater understanding of disease mechanisms in humans. This research is vital to saving and improving lives.

I'd love to donate my parts, but donating my body to science sounds cool too.

2003-11-12 07:01:36 AM
I have no problems with donating organs to a person. I do have a problem with donating for research. Some f*cking brain dead med student with his finger up my bunghole is more than I want to share.

And so it can become public knowledge. When we call a procurement (sp) team to come pick up a body, they usually come in by private helicopter/plane/lime. No wonder the whole scheme is based on money.

I have 3 kidneys, I 'kid' you not, but I certainly wish I had 2 livers.

Its a double right kidney, apparently. I could donate one, and still have 2 left (or 2 right, in this case)

2003-11-12 07:06:27 AM
The lad died a while ago, right? Does anyone know how long the organs can be stored after harvesting before they become useless?

2003-11-12 07:10:07 AM
No, the fact that a rich asshat will get my organs...that really cheeses me off. And a deserving person who doesn't have the cash up-front will just sit at home and die. Whenever life gives me a choice between letting a rich prick win and letting a non-rich person lose, and making everyone lose, I'll damn well make sure the rich fark doesn't win. It's my choice. Interesting so many people have a problem with it.

gromky

But thats not the case everywhere, i'm sure some English farkers can explain about how the NHS does it etc?

2003-11-12 07:21:38 AM
gromky:- So rich people all deserve to die? There are no good, worthwhile members of society who are also wealthy?

As to the NHS (National Health Service), we pay higher taxes than Americans, and they pay for our medical system. You can opt to go private if you want a higher quality of care, and to cut down waiting times, but basically everyone is entitled to all operations and care under the NHS for free. This includes organ transplants and other expensive procedures.

I guess you CAN make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

2003-11-12 07:23:59 AM
Plus, many health insurance policies cover organ transplants in the UK, don't they in the US?

2003-11-12 07:26:37 AM
...for their shared Sept. 30 birthday.

We know what their parents were doing on New Year's Eve...

2003-11-12 07:30:54 AM
Im suprised they dont take organs from people regardless of permission. How is the family gonna know that little jimmy's kidneys are now serving the urinary track of little billy's granpa?

Do organs have rights? There technically living.

2003-11-12 07:36:23 AM
ImShocked

That has been discussed, as far as I remember, and it caused outrage in the uk and ireland. People figured it smacked of fascism. I personally think its great, why the hell not? But a lot of people are still very precious about 'disposing' of mortal remains. my opinion, and that of my father, is who give a fark..i'm dead, chuck me in a rubbish bin for all it matters.

No Catchy Nickname
Does anyone know how long the organs can be stored after harvesting before they become useless?

Only about 4-12 hours, depending on the organ. Hearts and lungs are the most fragile, and they must be transplanted within a few hours of harvest. The kidneys tend to be heartier (sorry), and they can be out of the body (on ice) for about 12 hours before transplant.

As for gromky's little argument against donation, it's people like you who caused your dad's friend to die without another kidney. I'm a surgeon at an inner city tertiary-care center, and I've seen dozens of people without insurance getting a transplant, and a lot of people getting second and even third transplants. Get some information before you make ignorant statements.

Some f*cking brain dead med student with his finger up my bunghole is more than I want to share.

Nice. I hope I can be your doctor someday. I'll give you a niiiiiice, sloooooow 3-finger rectal exam. I can't wait.

MedicOne - I have no problems with donating organs to a person. I do have a problem with donating for research. Some f*cking brain dead med student with his finger up my bunghole is more than I want to share.

It's not the med students finger that you should be worrying about entering you.

It was like Michael is not really gone," said Mary Aubuchon, Michael's mother. "It was like he was giving other people the chance in life that he didn't get."

No Ma'am he is gone he was stupid and he died, lets just hope that for some strange reason a "part" of his psychy doesnt live on in the girl so she wont die a stupid sensless death to.

2003-11-12 08:44:05 AM
gromky: I'm not arguing that the US medical system is fair, I'm just wondering where your line ends-- do you go to the doctor when you sick? after all, there are lots of people in the world poorer than you that have no where near the access to care that you do. You don't jump in front of them in line, do you?

2003-11-12 08:53:04 AM
LaughingGremlin: That's like having money in your wallet. Any time you need some extra cash, give that kidney up!

I wish I had an extra organ....

Hizzout

Not really. dunno, I never thought of that. The double right is like siamese twins, two squished together...so its more like 2 1/2 or something. Like I said...a spare liver, now we're talking.
