This shouldn't come as a surprise. I saw Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter expecting the worst. While silly at times it's far better then Transformers 3 or Battle: Los Angeles. It was fun enough while it lasted but will be quickly forgotten.

/I still get flashbacks due to watching Transformers 3 though they have faded to snatches of incoherent dialog and explosions.

Saw Brave and ALVH yesterday. Brave was packed, ALVH has about a dozen. Not a surprise as ALVH is R rated -a kiss do death if you want to rake in the $$$. Regarding ALVH. Not as good as Avengers, but better than Hunger Games. The writer did a very good job with the screenplay.

Save Brave - it was a very good Dreamworks movie. One of the worst Pixar movies.

Transformers 2 was worse.

There are a lot of movies this summer that shouldn't have been released in the summer. Abe was one of them. A Halloween release would have done much better.

Rated R movies will be rare in the next couple of years over the summer.

Alan Tudyk was pretty much the only good part of Transformers 3. I actually fell asleep in the middle of the big fight scene at the end because it was just so damn long and repetitive.

I tried to watch the first Twilight film with the Rifftrax, I couldn't even make it 20 minutes. Which is a shame because I hear that it is a very funny riff.

Didn't see the movie and don't plan to. When the first ads ran, I thought it was a spoof. It sounded corny enough, as if it ell right out of Family Guy. Then, I found out it was real.

Movie makers, IMO, had to be desperate to put together that thing. Next will come 'Benjamin Franklin Ghost Detective' or 'John Hancock Zombie Killer'. Maybe even "Betsy Ross Does Dallas."

I had a chance to see Brave but Abe was showing at the same time and I'm not seeing a childrens show without my kids. It's creepy.
Abe was fun. Like a really good SyFy channel movie.

I wouldn't say it sucks, but it had some major, major problems that I'm surprised got through the final edits.

Yeah. I just think ppl don't know what to think about Abe. Half the reviews I read said it takes itself too seriously, the other half thinks it didn't camp it up enough. I probably see it at the discount theater. I still want to see Prometheus, even if most Farkers thinks it sucks. The new Star Trek and Watchmen get a lot of hate on here and I really enjoyed those movies.

Star Trek and Watchmen got hate from fan boys who think anyone touching the sacred cow is blasphemy. Prometheus is just full of plot holes and plays the "Lost" game of asking questions and never even hinting at answers.

Couple that with 1 dimensional cannon fodder characters and you get an awful movie that somehow was getting 4 and 5 star reviews from critics.

Battle LA was like 20x better than Transformers 3

Not saying much.

But, really, Battle LA was OK. Skyline sucked ...

The Googlings on this movie revealed to me another cinematic masterpiece that I am now simply determined to track down and watch -- Saving Ryan's Privates. Don't ask me how I got from Abe Lincoln and vampires to presumably homo-erotic spoofs because you won't like the answer. You won't like it much at all.

Klivian: /Meanwhile, Prometheus still sucks.

I don't think it sucked so much, as it had a lot of wasted potential. It was a visually beautiful and well acted movie, and had some rich symbolism behind the story, but it somehow wound up being less than the sum of its parts, similar to how Lost went off the rails at the end.The plot relied way too much on smart people doing stupid things to keep the story moving through standard horror movie plot. It would have been a much better movie if they had tried to subvert those tropes to keep the story fresh.

It's really a shame, because it basically is the flip side of Blade Runner, since it is from the POV of beings that have traveled to see their creators in order to extend their too-short lives, only all the pieces don't come together to create the same magic this time.

Since I didn't see the movie until last week, so missed all the big Fark threads, I'll take the opportunity here to mention the big FAIL moment for me. After a long convoluted scene in which Noomi Rapace manages to give herself an alien abortion, IT'S NEVER MENTIONED BY ANYONE. She stumbles in, all bloody and shaking, on Weyland, David and various red shirts, and nobody says, "What just happened?" and she doesn't say, "Oh, I just left a horrible alien squid fetus in your surgical pod, you might want to look into that." No, David just gives her a clean robe and we get some fountain of youth woo-woo dialogue. WTF?

We saw AL:VH last night and it was great. Fun fight sequences, lovely gore and special effects. As someone said up thread, it might have been better as a Halloween movie and getting it's ass kicked by two animated films is nothing to be ashamed of as an R rated movie.

The theater was pretty packed for the 7:40pm showing I went to (non-3D). The only downside was the assmunch sitting right behind me who got a phone call during the movie and proceeded to have a 5 minute conversation with someone about some keys or something. Replete with "yea, we're at the movies now". If he hadn't hung up when he did, there would have been some slayage going on inside the auditorium.

IMO, the only way to play a ridiculous premise is to be completely straight and dead serious. Otherwise you're into a Wayans brothers parody territory.

I don't see how the characters were any less one dimensional than the cannon fodder in Aliens and that is regarded as a classic.

That shiat still happens? To paraphrase Firefly, people who talk/text in the theater are vilified alongside child molesters nowadays and I haven't really seen that in years. Except one guy in a nearly empty theater who still chose to sit in front of us and started to text. He was an older man too, not a teenager. But he knocked it off soon enough.

I still get the douches who bring their kids to Rated R movies, cell calls are almost nil but fark, take you kids to a family member or a friend. Avengers was almost ruined for me due to kids crying.

Saw Brave on Friday. It was good, but probably so-so for a Pixar movie. It looked amazing, but really dragged in the middle. I think the problem was that it was pretty much two movies. The first was what we saw in the trailers, which was basically the character introduction. Then then realized that was only 25 minutes of screen time and they needed to fill the next 70, so we got the semi-lame plot about the mom into a bear by some random witch. It all came together well at the end, but, aside from individual scenes, the dynamics of the four clans was far more interesting and amusing.

Saw Moonrise Kingdom last night. Absolutely loved it. A must for any Wes Anderson fan. And now I've had Hank Williams' Kaw-Liga stuck in my head all day.

I don't know if this is a spoiler, but :

You really haven't lived until you've seen Abe Lincoln catch and ride a horse that's been THROWN AT HIM by a vampire (during a stampede), and then scooping up his dropped ax from the ground on horseback (during a stampede). This is a thing I didn't know I was missing until I saw it.

We saw Abe yesterday. Hubby loved it. I didn't. It was part karate kid, part Kill Bill, part high school civil war re-enactment, with a special cameo The Little Engine That Could. Casting was bad. Acting was bad. The Gawhd Aaaaawfuuuull Suthern' Aksents came and went.

Took the family to see Brave on Fri night, and had a wonderful time... we thought it was a very good story, engagingly told, and light-years better than "Cars 2" in terms of storyline. And of course, as befits a Pixar movie, the visuals were absolutely beautiful. We'll be going to see this one again for sure- my four year old daughter wouldn't stop talking about Merida.

abraham lincoln: vampire hunter was the hardest i have laughed in a long time. the whole audience was laughing their asses off and thoroughly enjoying it. i was brought to tears from laughter several times.

it was the absolute perfect blend of absurdity and earnestness. it took the most ridiculous things and treated them entirely seriously, to great comic effect. and when the absurdity grew (in battle scenes especially), it countered by becoming more and more over-the-top. i really lost it when jack barts threw a horse at him... really, farking threw a horse at him. and he dodged it because... he was abraham lincoln, vampire hunter.

it was probably one of my favorite B-movies i've ever seen. it was like watching bubba hotep made by the wachowskis.

and it also had a brief part by alan tudyk as stephen douglas. i really enjoyed it.

Well really? Who in their right mind would think that a novelty movie aimed at a narrow subsection of white males would outsell two animated movies made by committee to appeal to the broadest fan base imaginable?

On a related, but different topic, Avengers just passed MIB3, the movie that knocked them out of the top spot about a month ago. Should overtake Snow White, That's My Boy, and Rock of Ages sometime next week.

/Somewhat hilariously, Hunger Games has been beating Dark Shadows and Battleship for a couple weeks now.

also, i actually really liked prometheus. most of the negative reviews i've seen were complaining it wasn't alien again. but yeah, no shiat, it's not alien. it's literally not that movie. if you wanted to watch alien, go pop in the dvd and watch alien.

that being said, they did a pretty good job keeping to the alien lore (pre-AVP). if you understood the hinted at origins of the aliens as described in the books, it actually made a lot of sense. i can see how if you didn't understand those things it left a lot of important elements to implication, which could be confusing... hopefully things that would become more apparent after multiple viewings. but knowing that lore, it made perfect sense to me and was really enjoyable watching it being fleshed out.

i also like how it definitely led to the alien movies, but is also apparently taking another story arc altogether in the same universe... idk, that just seems interesting to me. i can't think of another example of that type of thing happening in movies. i think it turns the alien franchise from what it had become, a schlocky creature-feature series of ever-decreasing quality, and turns it back into an expanded sci-fi universe where the creatures are just one facet.

Brave was a solid movie, but it needed about fifteen minutes of development in certain places. The climax especially was underwhelming.

It's still far better than that farking Madagascar tripe, though. Kung Fu Panda is the only worthwhile animated thing Dreamworks has ever done.

/La Luna, which I already saw once as part of the Oscar: Best Animated Shorts movie, was the best part of the whole thing.
