FTA: Guacamole is as much a part of American cuisine as burgers, pizza and yes, apple pie.

Are you kidding me? From reading this you'd think were putting guacamole on pizza and burgers too....

It's fun to say "guacamole".

But don't give away my Avocado pie.

Avacado is a drupe, and a fruit is a type of vegetable. Taxonomy is hard.

Where I was raised, the only known purpose of an avocado was to extract the pit and try and germinate it into an avocado tree seedling, which after 6 months the cat would finally chew both the two leaves that had managed to sprout off.

Avocado and/or guacamole on a burger (with some bacon and grilled onions) is really tasty. You should give it a try sometime!

Avocado on pizza -- I can see that working (as avocado, not as guac), depending on the other toppings.

I've got two avocado trees grown from pits. One of them is about 7 feet tall. They are actually very easy to grow.

No. Don't tell people they can bake avocados. Don't ever bake an avocado. Don't even heat avocado, unless you're trying to get revenge on someone.

How sad, they didn't share the recipe.

My mom would do two things with avocado--cut it in half, sprinkle it with sugar and give you a spoon. Or cut it in half and fill the hole with french dressing and give you a fork. I loved either one. Too bad she didn't know about avocado pie because I think that would have been awesome.

Back through the 50's and 60's, Grampa had a huge Avocado orchard in San Diego. About 500 acres in 65. He supplied most of the restaurants around the area. He called them "gator pears". But, in the wisdom of the highly conservative (corrupt) city council, they decided that agriculture was a "low profession" and took steps to eliminate it as an industry in SD County. So, they started raising taxes on land used to grow food on, at the same rate per acre as houses, knowing full well that eventually it would have to be sold off to the tract housing industry, who had paid for the campaigns of those same County Council members. By the mid-70's all that was gone and he was left with a 1/2 acre chunk with three avocado trees on it, that he was then forbidden to sell as it wasn't from a large enough farm.

Now, that land is a solid clump of nearly identical houses, parking lots, fast food restaurants, convenience stores, cheap apartments, used car lots, 6 lane arterials and pavement.

And more pavement.

Ugh. That breaks my heart to read. My husband grew up in San Diego, and as much as he loves it...I just can't stand staying there for very long. I like his friends and family well enough, but the environment itself is hard to take. There are some cool places (like Balboa Park, the Wild Animal Park, and Old Town), but most of it is sprawling Generica. Not only that, but you have to drive to get anywhere. It's really impersonal.

It'll always be the place where my husband grew up, but a lot of the places he remembers fondly have been torn down and replaced with businesses that are the same all over the country. I don't know that he's noticed, though...

Is an avocado a fruit or a vegetable? In Northern California it's just about a meat. In Texas they say it's not a meal unless beef is in it.Well iin Northern California Its not a meal unless it has avocado or garlic in it.

Approach with caution. . .I sent my daughter an avocado pie recipe not long ago, with my typical "Looks great!" comment. She ended up getting the ingredients and making it, and her verdict was that it was the nastiest thing on the planet. She's a very experienced cook, completely open-minded about ingredients and new recipes, and still, nobody could be found who thought that thing was edible. And now, naturally, anything I think looks promising is instantly suspect.

Many of those suggestions actually sound pretty good.

That being said, despite avocados currently being lauded for their relative healthiness, if it tastes good it will eventually be found to cause heart disease, obesity, multiple forms of cancer, Alzheimer's, lupus, pregnancy, lycanthropy, dry mouth, and a plethora of other horrible afflictions. Best to be safe and stick with the pork rinds. At least they're an enemy we know.

In Arizona, my uncle introduced me to guacamole with two strips of crisp bacon on tortilla, rolled into a burrito. Called this, "Guac-n-Roll". Try it folks.

And the local Mex restaurant makes awesome chicken noodle soup, adding lots of cilantro and diced avocado. Best chicken soup anywhere.

Just out of curiosity what is up with the guy in the background of the third pic in your profile? He looks rather appalled at whatever you are doing.

Nice shot. I like shots that capture the unexpected.
