More Uber Defense today? snore.

I've been lucky to be able to see most of these games, and see the difference between mediocre, good, and great soccer.

Spain passes the ball on defense almost as well as Germany does on offense. Seriously, the first half of watching Germany play Greece was like watching the Globetrotters versus the Generals.

I think this was the only quaterfinal that people were split on who was actually going to win it. I still think England will pull off the win, but I really couldn't care less who ends up winning. I hope to see 40 red cards.

I think England will win. I'm hoping they play Germany and SOMEHOW score the upset (I made a stupid bet that England would have a better result in this tournament than Spain. Don't ask).

But it looks like Spain is pretty damn unbeatable, and Germany hasn't destroyed this many hopes and dreams in Poland since the 1930s.

I'm so glad this isn't the finals. Otherwise I'd have to break out the "Euro 2012 : England vs Italy. Whoever wins ... we lose". Really, it's a case of the perpetually overrated and stunningly overconfident doorknobs playing the worst of the worst of the diving prima donna's.

If England wins, we're going to be subjected to two years of inflated expectations for the 2014 World Cup where many in the British media (which, unfortunately, is where we get most of our soccer in Canada from) will all but crown Wayne Rooney as the Golden Boot of 2014. When England is inevitably eliminated by New Zealand in 2014 (after their starting Keeper finally arrives in Brazil after convincing the New Zealand government that yes indeed, New Zealand has a Soccer team playing in Brazil, and that most of the world calls it Football instead of Soccer, so please approve the expedited passport pretty please?) there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth at yet another English failure to bring the championship back to the birthplace of Football.

If Italy wins, we're going to see Italy make the ref's look like idiots even on an international soccer ref standard, and that's just going to set soccer in Canada back a bit because if the way to win games on the international level is to fake injuries, dive, and whine at the ref, why bother playing soccer? Just stay home and pick a website with forums, suck up to the administrators so that they don't ban you for insulting anyone on the site you want. Far easier on the cardiovascular system.

If England were to win the championship, how would expectations be inflated? They would have beaten Italy, Germany and probably Spain. If they can beat those teams, they can beat anyone in the world.

It won't happen, but if it did, it would seem appropriate to raise world cup expectations, no?

Could go either way.

Given the state of the team in the run-up to this tournament, and the relatively poor set of individual players England have more than met expectation as far as I'm concerned. Anything else from here on in is a bonus.

Hey guys, I'm sure someone here can help. I'm flying overseas Wednesday at the time of the game and don't want to miss it. I'm assuming WatchESPN won't work if not in the USA. Does anyone know where I can download the game shortly after it airs? I'll take a torrent - anything you know of that'll be easy to get fast on Wednesday. Thanks in advance.

Some players make a lot of any contact. England Vs Italy in '97 had a different breed of player.

Yellow cards are wiped after this game. Players not on a yellow already get on 'free hit'. Players picking up a 2nd yellow of the tournament will miss the semi (if we win.

See, the reaon WHY England progressed this far is that tey're not relying on a superstar. It's always been their problem. They talk up the wonder boy of the day, put the whole thing on his shoulders and biatch when it doesn't work.

I realize Rooney scoring the winner in the last game doesn't line up with my point, but at least this year the team has worked together and not been just "pass it to Owen/Beckham/Rooney/Superstar of the moment who inevitably proves human and can't carry the team".

Lots of ways. Contact, time wasting, mouthing off at the ref, smacking somebody.

Time wasting or a nasty tackle, typically.

Time wasting, outside the box fouls, handling outside the box, there's quite a few ways a GK can pick up a yellow.

The Guardian minute-by-minute of Italy Ireland makes it sound like the card was for arguing with the ref.

New Zealand had a very weak OFC Nations Cup. I wouldn't be surprised to see New Caledonia or Tahiti go through to the inter-confederation playoff.

Agreed. Good teams have synergy that 11 loosely associated players dont = see Newcastle 2008/9 Vs 2011-12. Part-time fans/ignorant, huddled masses only recognise individual brilliance.

Rooting for England for the tourney. They could really use this one and I like 'em.

-Portugal should get nothing and like it.
-I don't want Spain to have this much glory, no matter how beautifully they play
-Italy is just a shade above Portugal on the douchemeter.
-Germany is alright, don't have too much of a beef with them.

I guess you missed the goalie RED CARD in the Poland Greece matchup. They can commit fouls just like any other player, and though it's rare they're in a position to do it, it usually comes with a card because the goalie is so close to goal. And of course any player can get carded for arguing or altercations when the ball isn't in play.

Depending on your cable provider, you can watch all games live and all replays at espn3.com. I say depending on your cable provider because you have to provide your cable provided email and password to stream it. This means your cable provider must participate in this. I simply enter my AT&T email/pass and it gets me in.
