DamnYankees: The UN doesn't have any authority over the US, though. The only authority they have is authority that we choose to give them by voluntarily ratifying treaties.

The reason billionaires like the Koch brothers fear the UN is because it's a distant authority they can't currently buy. If the UN pressures the US to improve environmental regulations or force it's companies to stop exploiting children in a foreign land, the Koch brothers and other organizations can't buy their way out of the situation. They must drum up hatred of the UN within the US so that our legislators will fear creating international alliances to solve world problems. US corporations exploit the resources and the populations of foreign nations for profit. Organizations like the UN attempt to stop corporate practices which pollute, enslave or exploit the poor, etc, etc.. This is a threat to those who make billions from such actions.

People like the Koch brothers who were peripheral in creation of the John Birch society (their father was involved in the founding of it) and the spread of poisoned philosophies like Objectivism and it's worship of greed and selfishness don't want to see the UN succeed in it's mission of a greater good. Ayn Rands philosophy of Objectivism is the creed of those devoid of all compassion and conscience and it's little more than the worship of wealth.

While at opposite ends of the political spectrum communism and Objectivism are equally destructive to society. The Koch brothers and others like them are just as dangerous to America as any Communist leader such as Castro, Chavez, etc.

Its because its distant authority; people always resent distant authority, no matter how benign. They always respect
authority that is percieved as closer to them, both physically and socially.

There is lot of similarity to the Tea Party's irrational hatred of 'big government', actually.

The UN doesn't have any authority over the US, though. The only authority they have is authority that we choose to give them by voluntarily ratifying treaties.

The Constitutional Experts among the Tea Party believe a UN treaty can trump our constitution, therefore providing Obama (or anyone) a convenient way to circumvent their rights and eliminate them trivially.

Agenda 21's barely even a 'thing' -- it's a toothless forgettable feel-good bureaucratic document from a couple decades ago. Regarding efficiency and sustainability, AL repubs are begging the question by pretending that the only possible reason for supporting certain goals is servitude to some 'ism'.

Can I call Alabama dumb for basing their laws on a recently invented mythology or demonology that you have to be Republican to believe?

Seriously, if I stand in front of a mirror in a dark room at midnight and say "sustainability" three times, is Karl Marx's ghost gonna get me??!?

DamnYankees: For the life of me, hatred of the UN remains one of those things I can't understand. Just makes no sense.

I hate the UN because it's run by the same sort of greedy, corrupt pieces of shiat that run the US government. They would rather see millions (MILLIONS) of human beings die due to war, poverty, disease, or any other imagineable cause than to take the LEADERS of nations that allow such atrocities and bang their heads against a wall until they are dead. They are more interested in the APPEARANCE of caring about human rights than true human rights. They care about political hand-shaking than human rights.

Republicants hate the UN because, liberalism, or whatever. I hate the UN because it still uses the Cold War playbook when it comes to addressing international human rights issues.

DamnYankees: The UN doesn't have any authority over the US, though. The only authority they have is authority that we choose to give them by voluntarily ratifying treaties.

Of which agenda 21 isn't even one. It's basically the minutes from the international equivalent of a casual lunch date where you and your office-mates tossed around ideas for making sure you always have enough office supplies.

Not a treaty, not an officially adopted definite course of action for any country, not binding in even the slightest.

If this was an actual UN-brokered treaty or even one of the pointless-but-slightly-less-pointless UN resolutions I could see why the paranoids on the right would be worried. I mean, I wouldn't agree it would be worth worrying about, but I'd at least understand the logic of why it would worry them.

//People hate the UN because its entire purpose is to prevent the exercise of what most individual nations regard as their sovereign rights, and stop them from doing things their culture often explicitly defines as good. It's as simple as "a good compromise leaves no one satisfied".

2012-06-23 07:54:44 PM
The UN put Robert Mugabe in charge of tourism. You don't want your local goverment implementing their idiotic "smart growth" ideas. Have your local leaders recently become brilliant enviromental and social engineers? You got Agenda 21.

Many countries are on the Council, it helps push them to slowly change their old bad ways

If every country with human rights problems past and present weren't allowed on there would not be a country eligible.

Hmmmmm, I'll accept that. Both parts. It would be nice if it worked faster, though. And having those countries on the council screwing around protecting the bad actors is - unhelpful.

Yes, a great many of them do.

I'll disagree. I think the UN basically provides a forum for countries who want their own business interests to take the place of the American business interests. they don't really want to fix it, they just want to be the ones benefitting from it.

While at opposite ends of the political spectrum communism and Objectivism are equally destructive to society. The Koch brothers and others like them are just as dangerous to America as any Communist leader such as Castro, Chavez, etc.

Selfishness, especially taken to the sociopathic extreme displayed by the international oligarchs, is indeed bad. I guess I'm going to have to break down and read Atlas Shrugged. I saw the movie, and it rang pretty true for me, so far as the politicians screwing over the guy with the better mousetrap to the benefit of their cronies (and thus, the enrichment of themselves). I firmly believe that the way to stop corporatism is to reduce the power of the government to not only over-regulate everything, but also then craft loopholes for the bad companies who are used as the justification in the first place. That's exactly what happened in the so-called "bank reform."

I love how we're not even 2.5 centuries old, as an actual country, and we can't seem to get even the slightest grasp on our history. Meanwhile, over in Europe, it's common to find buildings that are 600+ years old. We don't even understand what tradition is over here by comparison with most of the world.

Yes but that just indicates that you are a paranoid conspiracy theorist who believes the ramblings of extremists. The UN provides a forum for ALL countries, some of whom want those things, some who do not but it also, by nature of not being dominated by one country or group of countries, provides exactly the kind of balancing influence the other poster was referring to.

How exactly can these countries of your imagination use the UN to put their business interests in the place of US interests? There is no mechanism for doing so whatsoever.

Now the World Trade Commission could be accused of being used to further country's national business interests, but the worst offender there is the US so I would go there if I were you..
