Is that stupid tag for people running red lights and idling in the middle of the intersection, Submittard? I have no problem with those idiots ponying up $480. Yeah, the city's milking it, but they're milking deserving assholes, so I'm okay with this. Don't blow the red light and make sure you can actually get through the damned intersection before entering it so you don't clog it up for everyone else.

Hmmmm. How coincidental that intersection is the main corridor from the airport to the freeway.

Sounds like a dangerous intersection. I bet less people run lights there now that there are cameras.

Reminds me of a guy I knew who's dumass teen age daughter rear ended a guy who had stopped at a yellow light. She said "Well, he could have made it."

The truly sad part is that as much as 90% of the money collected from such traps goes to the contractors who install and mantain the equipment. It's a virtual goldmine for this assholes. Some states sit back and accept pennies on the dollar because to them it's free and effortless.

It's much like telemarketers who collect huge amounts of money for fire departments, schools, etc. Then pay the organization a few cents of every dollar collected. Only a moran gives to these telemarketers.

They don't even get half. Also, when I mailed a check for mine it went out of state and the company that made the cameras is overseas.

Only of the city's contract team are completely idiots - in most cases the company is paid a monthly flat fee regardless of the amount of tickets it generates.

It's a trap!

Seriously, you have people leaving the airport and going into downtown. Then there's a 90° turn toward the freeway entrance. That leads to a combination of people not knowing where they are going and constantly changing lanes along with traffic backing up unexpectedly that can trap you in the middle of the intersection while the light is changing. Scamalamalama!

We have a few lights like that in Toronto. The one at Front St. & Bathurst bridge there's usually cops sitting down the road watching and waiting for dumbasses to try their luck. Easy money.

Don't red light cameras result in more crashes, rather than less?

Or, rather, do you have any evidence they reduce fatal crashes at all?

Police are just agents for the city/state to get money.

Red light cameras should be unconstitutional, considering the money goes to a third party and not the city. There is no accountability.

http://www.iihs.org/news/rss/pr020111.html

IIHS says yes, red light cameras usually reduce the number of fatal car accidents at an intersection.

Why did you just mail them a check? If you were clearly in the right and the camera ticketed you for a legal right-on-red, why not fight it? More fought tickets = more work for the courts and the cops that review the photos.

You made the first unsupported claim. Also: like every fark thread about red light cameras, ever.

But since you asked:

Doesn't look like a clear-cut increase in safety to me. But, I drive the speed limit in the city so it isn't my problem - unless someone hits me, that is.

One could say the same for speeding tickets. They're seen as a revenue stream, though, and always will be.

2012-06-23 06:44:38 PM
Only 12 violations per day? BFD. There are a dozen intersections near me that tally more red light runners in an hour. They probably hit a dozen every 10 minutes at rush hour. Of course, none of those intersections have red light cameras, yet.

I wish those intersections did have cameras. Red light cameras aren't an evil technology. They're only evil when municipalities and private companies shorten the yellow light time span to increase revenue. Some states have written laws to prevent those abuses. No, the cameras in those states earn nearly as much revenue as the private companies and municipalities would like, but they do increase safety and they do improve traffic flow.

The camera haters are lying when they say they don't improve safety. Red light cameras definitely reduce serious accidents.. I'd rather be in 100 of the slow rear-enders caused by a red light camera than just one of the high speed t-bone accidents they tend to prevent.

Why is the fine $480? Why not $4800? You can charge however much you want when you're the law.

I've wondered about that. Similarly, any for-pay turnpike can theoretically gauge whether or not your average speed is over the posted limit, and mail you a ticket. That would be similar to a red-light camera and would likely result in less speeding and (maybe) more uniform traffic flow.

I'd like a camera that issues a ticket for failing to signal, personally.

Ah! For a second I thought you were saying you didn't deserve the ticket. It is a shame that there's no sympathy built into the cameras.

I got double-flashed (it takes a picture both before and after you enter the intersection) turning right on a red light where it was allowed, but did not get a ticket in the mail. Both flashes were after I had already started turning. Fortunately, the San Diego lights save 30 seconds of video from before the incident, which allows the reviewing officer to see if you made a complete stop before turning. I had.

Ha ha! I live in a state that outlawed these cameras. They also don't use unmarked police cars for traffic stops. State troopers do know how to set bear traps, but I haven't done anything stupid enough to get pulled.

I have no problem with this. I grew up there and have managed to make it through that intersection hundreds of times and never got a ticket. Why? I stop when the darling light is red. I'm in Korea now where traffic lights seem to be more of a suggestion. Outside my apartment probably half the cars and 90% of the buses and taxis run the red lights. I've nearly been hit on almost a daily basis and it pisses me off to no end. I've come to a point where I'd actually like to see the local incompetent police actually enforce driving laws.

Speed cameras are a different story, though.

The intersection can be one massive clusterfark. It has two lanes that turn left on an arrow onto Grape. (and you have to get into these lanes blocks ahead of time) Grape also has train tracks crossing it 2 blocks away and then the 5 freeway a few blocks after that. So traffic can quickly back up during rush hour or with a train. If you are not careful it is easy to get stuck in the middle of that intersection when turning left. Especially if you are not familiar with the area.
