And of course it ends under yellow. Legge makes the race official.

Crunch goes the Lotus. 14 left.

FiendishFellow05: Is the Indy Lights race worth watching? Never watched one - aren't they basically baby IndyCars?

Indy Lights is a spec series, everyone runs the same chassis and engine, having said that it's very good racing. Also at least according to wiki there are 28 drivers, racing for 17 different teams.

WhyteRaven74: Tellingthem: Even the qualifying has been getting crazy this year.

Earlier today both Force India cars made it to the last qualifying session which is the ten fastest cars from the second session.....Oh and neither Ferrari made it.

I know Webber with more problems...doh! 14 now?

Congrats RHR!

Jesus, Katherine Legge nearly gave me a heart attack there. Way too close to a nasty accident.

And that's the race. Ryan Hunter-Reay is your winner. Marco Andretti, pick up your sore loser award at the courtesy booth.

Do I hear fourteen cars left?

Some Bass Playing Guy: F1 has been exciting this year. I gave up on watching the Speed channel broadcast and just download the race a few days later. The Sky Sports coverage is infinitely better.

Well this weekend there's no Bob Varsha for Speed's coverage of F1, so it's three catty Brits which is highly entertaining.

Bob Jenkins just accidentally handed the trophy to Helio Castroneves.

The race tomorrow is going to be insane. Either one of the usual suspects, namely Vettel, will just run away with it, or someone who has no business winning an F1 race, not because of them but rather the team they drive for, is going to win.

Do they use a different audio feed (bbc or sky) or is it still Speed but with different people? I haven't watched a race on there in forever.

We just get YWCs instead, again fitting with that corn theme

I have a hard time imagining a top team not winning. Could be a bad impression, but it always seems like if you qualify up front, you've pretty much earned a near-golden ticket(mechanical gremlins not withstanding).

And of course on the shortest oval of the year Barichello has his best finish of the year. I get the feeling he's getting the car figured out, if he is, the upcoming road races are going to be a lot of fun. Barichello is used to having to deal with people like Hamilton and Alonzo, who are not known as the nicest drivers around. He gets the car right, the next few races could be very entertaining.

Wonder if there will be a closed door meeting at Andretti Autosport with Marco and Ryan. Kinda doubt it but you never know.

Nice that Marco didn't give RHR the one finger salute.

But in Indycar, wouldn't that be Sato, Rain, Checkered?

I've kind of given up trying to predict anything this year. But I'm almost thinking Hamilton will take out Vettel and that way we can have an 8th driver win. Should be interesting...

He may be the only person more excited to head back to the road courses, behind Will Power.

It's Speed with their own people, so it's not the BBC or Sky feed.

FiendishFellow05: you've pretty much earned a near-golden ticket(mechanical gremlins not withstanding).

Hasn't been the case this year. Also save for Red Bull and Mercedes the question of which team is where is wide open. Sure Ferrari has looked good the last few races, but I'm not sure they're one of the top teams this year. McLaren and Williams look like they may be back to where they used to be, and then Force India, Force freaking India, is putting cars in the last qualifying session. Oh and Caterham is looking better, not top of the pack good but solid mid field good. Which means something goes wrong for one or two top cars and they get something right, and they'll get a car in the top 8.

I'm sticking around. Not a fan of spec series(but I can understand controlling costs for the feeder series), but I figure it'll be entertaining.

I can see Hamilton going for Vettel and ending up completely blowing it. Or taking out someone completely different.

WhoIsWillo: He may be the only person more excited to head back to the road courses, behind Will Power.

Yep. Also, I suspect he actually enjoys the learning process. Plus unlike Nigel Mansell, he's not a raging asshole.

Jensaarai: You know you all want to stick around for the Indy Lights race. For the lulz.

I'm sticking around for it. I love Indy Lights. Always have, I remember the year when Greg Moore just owned the entire series. Half the time he was so dominant you'd swear he was running a different chassis and engine from everyone else.

It seems like he's having fun.

2012-06-24 12:39:36 AM
Also on the F1 front, there hasn't been a top driver to have a spectacular engine failure this year nor has them been a major wreck this year. One or the other has to be happen at some point soon.

2012-06-24 12:41:28 AM

WhoIsWillo: It seems like he's having fun.

It does, I suspect because he is. At his age there weren't many top level series he could go to. He maybe could've pulled a mid level team ride in one of the Le Mans series. But I suspect he wants to stick with cars where it's just him driving which pretty much leaves Indy cars. I can't imagine a German Touring Car team would want to pick up someone at his age.

Ok, someone tell me who are the key drivers/teams to watch for in this event.

It's almost midnight, and there's a race about to start. And it appears there's about ten people in the stands.

What's the difference between the Indy Lights chassis and engine vs. Regular Indycars?

catastrophe averted: Ok, someone tell me who are the key drivers/teams to watch for in this event.

It's a spec series, so the team thing doesn't mean much. There 17 teams covering 28 cars, so there are tons of single car teams. As for good drivers, the guys they have in the first three rows are pretty darn good. Though I'm wondering what the hell is going on with the guy who got pulled, even though he made it into the race.

I... have no idea. Two drivers in the field qualified for the Indy 500.

Saveadra is the one with the most experience in real Indycar, IIRC.

Good to see the kids are learning how to do proper (waved off) Indycar starts.

The announcer said "possible sponsor issue" for the guy who got pulled.

fredzilla: What's the difference between the Indy Lights chassis and engine vs. Regular Indycars?

Well Indy Lights still uses the old style chassis, completely open wheel, no fairings over the rear wheels. And as for the engine, it's a gasoline powered V-8 as opposed to an alcohol powered turbocharged V-6. Also all the Indy Lights cars uses the same engine, in Indy there are three engine choices, and next year will be choices as far as body work and chassis.

Which doesn't really explain anything. He was qualified for the race, so the team is/was at the track. So I can't imagine what the sponsor issue could be. Also if there are sponsor issues, it's a lot easier to pick up a new sponsor if you get a good finish.

Very true. And the "official announcement" there a couple laps ago was even more vague and mysterious. I'm wondering if the guy just wasn't fit to drive tonight.....
