We need to be nice to them, subby. They're going to wind up owning most of this country before it's over with.

Honestly, there isn't much of a difference between a Chinese hotel room and an American one. Swap out the crappy coffee pot for a water boiler and throw in some plastic shower shoes and you're good to go.

Somehow I don't think the Chinese tourists who can afford to come to the US are still working in sweatshops.

/They might own one though.

Let's put this into perspective here.

Projected Chinese tourists in 2016: 2.6 million
Average spent per person: $6,000

That is a projected $15,600,000,000 market. And they book group tours, meaning that the tourism industry knows about where they will be going and can prepare specific locations to accomodate them. It's not like your local Motel 6 is going to start handing out "Do Not Disturb" signs in Mandarin just in case.

If that was really the case we should be nicer to ourselves - since we own most of it and China only owns 9.8% of our debt.

Have you ever been to a hotel in China? They bend over backwards to make their western guests comfortable.

And China is quite dependent on our consumerism right now.

Biggest difference is the beds I guess, hard vs. soft.

That's what the cowards were saying about the Japanese in the 80's. Funny how that turned out.

You're not looking at the bigger picture. You know all that money we spend on things made in China? Chinese investors are taking that money and coming back over here and buying up real estate and businesses. Our debt has nothing to do with it. They're going to buy the whole country out from underneath us, and they're doing it with our consumer dollars.

Then everything gets expropriated back to US ownership via the taxation system before the percentage gets too high. Through such a long-term arrangement, the Chinese end up paying the debt owed to them.

carnifex2005: That's what the cowards were saying about the Japanese in the 80's. Funny how that turned out.

The problem is that there are plenty of Chinese and too many pro-China politicians in the US.

That, and unlike a Chinese hotel room, the American one doesn't bug the hotel room or have the staff leave malware on any computers brought in on any routine basis.

Chinese tourists will try to haggle for prices on the Champs Elysees. They want nothing to do with local food and will only eat at Chinese restaurants. If they're paying for something they will try to lean around the counter to look at the cash register or computer while the person works. They don't tip. They have no social awareness and either don't understand or ignore you if you say excuse me to get around them.

Brazilians are just loud and obnoxious and really don't care if they make a scene.

The Japanese presence in America's online retailing industry is very huge. To be specific, there has been a gigantic Asian economic influence (China, Japan, and South Korea) in the American economy.

There is a reason why Americans continue to have to work harder and harder. The Asian influence.

That reminds me of my last business trip to Northern New Jersey where I had the privilege of being stuck in a hotel full of a huge group of Chinese tourists. The place smelled horrible and they were up after 3am running around the hallways slamming doors screaming things in Chinese. I went and complained to the front desk, they said they would tell them to be quiet but that didn't do much. I drove home for 8 hours the next day after a day of working on site instead of risking the same thing happening...

So are they supposed to conform to what you want and expect? It's actually quite simple. They have money they want to spend here. They get to act the way they want and not the way you want.

It's not my business how they choose to act. In my opinion they are the worst tourists in the world. I get to think that way.

How's that for cultural relativism?

Not if they're going to cost more than their blood money would provide.

If anything, milk them for what they are and provide lesser service compared to others that do not.
