Well, considering that the piece of shiat is as likely to explode or hit something random as it is to hit a selected target is a bit of a drawback from the safety point of view. Brand "X" AK-47s are good for savages to fire into the air when they are excited.

Meh. Sounds like a reasonable alternative to "first month's rent free" promotion. Now, with an effective security system included!

I dunno- I got an Egyptian Maadi MISR with a bent barrel for $200. I got it for the receiver and the wood furniture it had. Besides not being able to shoot straight it slam-fired all of the time. It's a Soviet pattern receiver so it was easy to find parts and rebarrel it. Now it looks cool and shoots straight.

For a few bucks more and less trouble, you could get a decent SKS.
A few more than that will get you a basement level AR.

/Never been a big fan of the AK.
/Way overvalued for what it is, plus election year tax.

No, but it does come in a close second to WASR's

Years ago when I was house hunting I was shown a similar home.
When the realtor opened the front door there was a loaded pump action shotgun leaning next to the front door. The living room had a lovely fireplace with shotgun shells spilled on the coffee table. The master bedroom had cedar lined walk in closets and a loaded rifle leaning next to the bedroom door. The spacious kitchen with lots of cupboard space had a loaded nine mil on the counter near the back door. The basement was very clean and had plenty of growing lights on the ceiling. The master bath needed a lot of work because someone had been cooking in there. We didn't get to see the garage because it was padlocked shut and the curtains were closed on the windows. By the time we left the realtor was freaking out but she was trying very hard to hold it together. I told her it was a very nice house (it really was) but I was worried about the previous owner's friends showing up some night.

There were only 3 and the safety wasn't on either.By the time I finished looking at the house I was starting to look for trip wires.

Good idea- I have a Romanian SKS which is fun to shoot (and has a built in bayonet to stab the target) and a milled Bulgarian AK. Both shoot well- I did the rebuild for the challenge. The only exotic tool I needed was a headspace gauge to make sure I didn't kill myself when firing it. The rest of the work was done with basic handtools.

Always assume that a firearm is loaded.

Loaded means something specific. It doesn't mean that "the safety is off".

You should behave around firearms as if they are loaded unless you know otherwise. You should run to the interwebz to claim you saw a loaded handgun because you saw a weapon with the safety off.

=================

When the SKS was first imported, I bought a new Chinese version at Sarco for $199.95 -- sling, cleaning kit, 10 stripper clips and 1000 rounds of Chinese made ammo included. I used that gun for 10 years and sold it for $350. Thank you NRA for all the anti-Obama hysteria.

Because drug dealing types are known to follow the basic rules of gun safety and wouldn't want to have their guns loaded, easily accessible, and ready to use in a second's notice.

I think we all agree that was a sketchy scene even without this assumption.

I hear that alot. Maybe I just got lucky. My bottom dollar WASR10 will still hit a man sized target at 150y reliably, it doesn't jam or trigger slap. I actually enjoy shooting it more than my sig556. Not all clone AKs are junk.

Hell yeah.

Doesn't mean it was loaded.

Treat every firearm like it is, however, and you'll probably live a longer life.

I'd take a good AK. They aren't nearly as inaccurate as some people would have you believe and it's nice to be able to use detachable magazines instead of stripper clips (or god forbid the awful aftermarket detachable SKS mags).

Mine will ring a 10" steel target @ 130 yards shooting off-hand all day long, which is plenty of practical accuracy for me.

Very nice; I've been looking into a lot of saiga products lately. I'd dearly love a saiga 12, but, what would I do with it? They have all sorts of cool accessories on their website, even European hardwood stocks. They even have an English version of the site. But, I make a point of never buying a gun that I (or someone I know) haven't fired. I've fired aks before, but not that brand; I know there's not a lot of difference, but old habits are hard to break.

FWIW, I have a Saiga in 7.62x39 and I like it. The main difference is the furniture; the receiver and barrel and so forth are very similar to other Kalashnikov-type rifles. Subjective reports from a couple of Farkers say that my Saiga is slightly more accurate than Teh Nacho's WASR, but that's not in any way scientific or reproducible since none of us were doing accurate tests with controls or anything. We were just putting holes in paper and cardboard at the dang range and playing it by ear. Caveat shooter, or something.

(And how is it that there's an AK-related thread and Teh Nacho hasn't shown up? He must be busy....)

On the plus side, this is possibly the first time in history that a journalist used the word "AK-47" to describe a weapon even remotely related to an actual AK-47. It's a start.

Has anyone heard of the Hungarian-made FEG SA2000? It's just another 7.62 x 39 plunker but I really enjoy mine.

(Also have a true AK-47...cheap and another fun plinker)..

Now my REAL target-shooter is my Colt H-Bar match competition AR-15...THAT is my rifle with the good glass.

P.S. not a hunter, only a target shooter. None of the above should ever be used for home defense (best defense IMHO is a simple, short-barrel 12 ga...just an opinion).
