meat0918: Could it be that Americans got pissy at their CEO and didn't want to go to a place that doesn't want to give sick employees time off or give them lunch breaks?

I would like to imagine that Americans suddenly got enlightened, but I don't see it.

Most retail companies do the same type of crap. Sure, maybe on paper they give employees breaks and sick time, but in practice it doesn't happen.

Called my dad on father's day. He said he'd gone to Red Lobster for dinner only to find it "full of every black and mexican" in the area.

I LOL'd at his racism.

Great restaurants for those really special occasions when even someplace as fancy as Applebee's or Chili's won't do.

That's not racism, it's a fact. The last time I was in a Red Lobster, it was about 75% black and that's in an area where blacks make up 10% of the population at most. Brothers will drive their asses off for some bad seafood.

It depends on how it was said. My guess is his dad said it in the same manner my dad would say it and it very much was racist.

I like Olive Garden because ordering is so easy. Everything tastes exactly the same.

I dunno if Red Lobster changed, or my tastes did, but that shiat is terrible. So damn salty that you can't even taste what you're eating, it's disgusting.

Olive Garden I can stomach.

On the other hand the same business group operates PF Chang's which has some decent food by comparison. All the little old ladies in this town just go on and on about how we need an Olive Garden. My wife is from a very Italian family (grandfather off the boat), and it just drives her crazy.

I'll agree with the red lobster thing, I like the bread and that's about it.

Olive garden, while not being 'good' italian food, is a passable enough go at it that it's fine. All one really ever wants from faux italian is too much bread/starch/pasta, and passable sauce. I choose better when I can, but if you just want to 'go get something', it's fine. Like Mcdonalds isn't super cuisine, but it's a passable interpretation of a burger.

Red Lobster = Salt flavored frozen seafood

Been to OG twice. Dragged there once by an ex, met a blind date the 2nd time. Never again. RL? Not so bad. Always enjoyed it. Wish they were still here (Bangor ME)

Red Lobster is the only restaurant I've ever walked out of and that was from the appetizer making me sick.

The thing is though, it's not even cheap. I guess if you just totally don't know an area, and can't be bothered to use urbanspoon or google local or something, that'd be the only reason I can see to go to those places.

I'll never understand it... Someone asks where to get good Italian food in town, I start listing off a dozen good locally-owned places, and they interrupt me to ask if there's an Olive Garden in town.

/I thought you wanted ITALIAN food.

2012-06-22 06:39:05 PM
No excuse for eating at either of those places after high school... If you eat there you are bad and you should feel bad.. If you live somewhere where those are your choices, you need to move.

I don't get the Red Lobster hate: took the mrs. there last month on a date, the wood-fire-grilled salmon was teh sex. Really, very good, and yet still reasonably priced.

They recently opened an Olive Garden and Red Lobster directly next to each other in our redone shopping mall. The old people here love it. No one seems to know that they are owned by the same company.

Then again, no one seems to know the Trader Joe's is German.

Wow, didn't take long to insert "racism" into it, eh?

and another dummy who doesn't know how an implication works and how easily it is to read between the lines when talking to someone you know like a family member or close friend.

If a farker said it to another farker in text and you assume racism that is bad.

When someone you intimately know gives you some variation of the old "those people" line in real life it is easy to tell if they are being racist or not.

You are either trolling, dense or a racist.

Once my in-laws were visiting some town and the hotel concierge asked them if they needed dinner recommendations. They said they wanted Italian so he called a cab to take them to Romanos, purportedly the town's best. Turned out to be Romano's Macaroni Grill

PF Chang's is the worst mass-market chinese food I've ever been in. It's vile. The food is way over salted and even if they claim no MSG, I leave there with that MSG shake and the tightening of the throat.

Just vile and way too expensive for chinese.

EXACTLY.. And if you live within a few hours of a coastline there is NO EXCUSE to eat at Red Lobster.. Hell even in Philly you can eat seafood that is still kicking pulled out of the ocean the day before or that very morning..

meat0918: Could it be that Americans got pissy at their CEO and didn't want to go to a place that doesn't want to give sick employees time off or give them lunch breaks?

Regulatory mandates flowing from federal health care reform may be the most visible, but the list also includes measures such as new mandatory paid leave provisions that require us to change the way we accommodate employees who need to take time off when they are ill and ever more unrealistic requirements regarding employee meal and rest breaks that, in California for example, force our employees to take breaks in the middle of serving lunch or dinner

yeah...that's it I'm sure moron. Most have never read or heard this crap....or even cared.

Everything I've had at Red Lobster has been delicious.

Respect my opinion!

Our Olive Garden is always packed; it's like the fancy restaurant for the ghetto and the "eh, it's slightly more Italian than the little bitty place you can't get into anyway" for the rest of us.

As for Red Lobster...why they thought a Red Lobster would do good in the South Coast of Massachusetts is beyond me.

\but apparently the one next to Downtown Disney is good because it's their show restaurant :P

2012-06-22 06:47:12 PM
OG and RL both have decent dinner rolls/bread sticks.

The last time I ate at RL it was next to the hotel I was staying at. I got shrimp pasta alfredo (pretty hard to screw up). It was served with the cheese on the top molten and the cheese in the middle raw.

2012-06-22 06:47:13 PM
My GF loves olive garden for the breadsticks and italian dressing. She drags me there a few times a year to get her fix, even though there is a much better and cheaper locally owned italian restaurant about a mile from our house.

Getting old time, the attempt at making it "when you're here you're family", needs to stop. They need some better dividers or sound dampeners, even half empty, I can barely hear myself speak. That, and when was the last time you paid your family to cook for you?

2012-06-22 06:48:13 PM
Olive Garden is the worst crap on the face of the planet.

2012-06-22 06:48:19 PM
I currently live in "fly over" country and there are plenty of decent local Italian places. Italian is hardly exotic food. Are there really places in this country so devoid of local restaurants that they need to do Olive Garden?

I had PF Changs when it was still relatively unknown outside a few branches. Their duck was pretty good. Once they became more or less national, they must have seriously slipped on standards. And imho, it now sucks. I wouldn't eat there.

Same thing for me. Went over to some yokel backlot town. Asked where's a nice restaurant. "You mean like a Denny's?" I replied, "No, something better than that." "Well, there's Red Lobster, but I can't recall where it is..."

Wait, the Bangor OG closed? Where will the kids go on prom night if they can't afford the gas to get to Dysart's?

PF Changs is owned by PF Changs. Darden does not own or run it. Darden is basically Red Lobster and Olive garden with some other minor chains or specialty restaurants.

My BP goes up 20 points just driving past one!

Part of the appeal of RL must be the mystery dishes. Reading their menu is like being on an expedition with Darwin. Do they just make up this shiat? I guess "immature, tasteless crustaceon" is not as sexy as "Zimbabwe Lobster"

I had a roommate for a long time that was a manager at a red lobster, he would come home every night with several bags of those biscuits. Too much of a good thing, I may never be able to eat them again without getting ill.
