So much to keep track of.. I think I'll skip Bellator live and watch UFC then watch a copy of Bellator after the fact.. No way I'm keeping track of two at the same time.

I figure since most the thread will probably be watching UFC first I will only post my UFC picks for now and hold back the bellator picks until later on.

Makes sense not to post Bellator picks until later to avoid spoilers. It sucks that MTV2 isn't showing Bellator 71. Instead of just DVRing it, I'll have to find an online source after the fact.

Having a free FX show that has a better card the night before makes UFC 147, on PPV, look even crappier. 147 has to be the weakest PPV in years.

I was thinking the same thing, I like this card a lot better than 147.

Pretty much. Not a good card on paper at all. But then it's more for the Brazilian market than the US. I'm surprised they kept it as a PPV for the US instead of just making it a free show.

Oof, you actually could hear his elbow clunking off his skull

2012-06-22 05:49:04 PM
My breakdown of the main event:

Maynard: Great hands, lots of power, but only 2 KO/TKO victories, the most recent way back in 2007. Great wrestler, but no finishes via submission. Has experience fighting 5-rounders, but cardio can be an issue.

Guida: Good cardio, busy pace, mixes striking and wrestling well. Likes to scrap, but will probably resort to humping. Not a big finisher and is susceptible to subs, particularly rear-nekkids, but also arm-bars.

This fight is very likely to go five rounds, with Maynard winning early rounds and Guida later rounds. The winner will be determined by which round is the turning point (and judging, obviously).

Prediction: Maynard via split decision: 48-47, 49-46, 47-48

Ya...the main event should be fun, but I'm not paying for it and I've been buying almost every PPV since my daughter was born and I've been pseudo-tethered to the house. I'm also pissed the Faber-Barao fight was moved off the Silva-Sonnen card. It's really unlikely that I'll buy two PPV's in the same month again anytime soon.

The ppv when first announced was badass, considering it originally had Silva-Sonnen II on it as well, then it got gutted and turned into this. It should still be fun, but I agree with everyone else, it isn't worth ppv money.

I picked Maynard, but I actually hope Guida wins. A fair chance Guida will out-cardio Maynard, particularly in a five round fight.

I think Guida will take it if he can stay off his back for enough of the fight. He will get taken down, he just needs to get back up quickly so he can tire Maynard out. There aren't many people who can keep a pace that ridiculous for 5 straight rounds.

Velasquez cut Bigfoot silva above the eye and they let that fight go to the finish, though they probably shouldn't have. That was the bloodiest fight I've ever seen and I give bigfoot props for lasting as long as he did blind. Doctor stoppages are always disappointing, though I understand they are necessary sometimes.

Well, someone mentioned it, so here's my picks. 0-4 so far

Klippoklondike: libranoelrose: violentsalvation: I just love it when people show up at my house unannounced and uninvited and make me participate in unwanted human interaction. Dick.

You didn't miss anything.

Yeah, that was a very boring fight. Worst of the night so far.

Oh, good.

2012-06-22 07:55:51 PM

NorCalLos: My breakdown of the main event:

15 of Guida's 29 victories are by submission. 5 are by TKO or KO. Only 9 have gone to decision. He's lost three split decisions, and he's never been knocked out. 8 of Maynard's 10 fights have gone to decision. Who doesn't finish?

Guida has a better shot at this than you're giving him credit for.

Guida, rear naked choke, round 2.

I don't know where this rumor of Maynard having ko power came from, but I have yet to see evidence of it. He has what, 2 ko's in his career and one in the ufc? He doesn't have pillow hands, but he certainly isn't a lightweight Dan Henderson or Alistair Overeem. He's a wrestler, a very very good wrestler, who is good at avoiding damage.

It's pretty funny Travis Wiuff has to fight in the tournament to get a shot at a champion he already beat. Silly tournament format and non-title bout bs. The guys last fight is a loss to Wiuff. Blech.

I'm not going to get to watch anything till the card starts on FX, so this crosstalk with UFC/Bellator is confusing, heh.

CJ was getting eaten alive for an entire minute. You can't just let that go on. It wasn't going to explode his forehead but the Shaolin Face Blocking defense is not well respected under the unified ruleset.

I agree. Having the champ fight (in his weight class) without the title on the line is lame. I like the tournament for someone to earn a title shot, but meanwhile have the champ defend his belt against guys who earned their shots by virtue of their records outside a tournament context. Tournament winner fights whoever is champ at the time.

2012-06-22 08:41:12 PM
Looks like it is going to be two rounds for Hioki. He's putting good pressure on him from on top, Lamas keeps playing the wrong side for half guard. If he can get those kicks back quick or use good setups, I think he could finish. Otherwise, he'll clearly lose.

I think Swanson took that one. I expect Pearson to show his durability and get Swanson on the mat. I picked sub mostly because I felt bad picking the last four fights of the night as decision, but I expect a Pearson decision as most likely.

I can see why you might've thought I was saying Maynard was a bigger finisher than Guida. That's not what I was saying at all. I do think he has more power than Guida, based on his fights with Edgar and Diaz, as well as some nice ground and pound against other fighters I can't name of the top of my head. I did point out that Maynard has not KO'd/TKO'd anyone in a long time, and also has no finishes via submission.

I did explicitly state that Guida isn't a big finisher, which I stand by. While he did have a nice run of 3 subs in a row, 6 of his prior 8 wins were via decision. Regarding Guida's overall record, I tend to not read too much into early career records in smaller promotions because I have no way of gauging the quality of opponents. I like to look at how guys perform against guys I'm familiar with.

I did mention that I thought this fight was likely to go to the scorecards because I don't think either guy is a big finisher and I think both guys are difficult to finish. I really like Maynard's boxing and ground n pound. I think he's more talented than Guida, potentially championship caliber. I think Guida is a perpetual contender who, while very active, looks more active than he actually is because of his pretty hair.

Klippoklondike: Y

I don't know where this rumor of Maynard having ko power came from, but I have yet to see evidence of it. He has what, 2 ko's in his career and one in the ufc? He doesn't have pillow hands, but he certainly isn't a lightweight Dan Henderson or Alistair Overeem. He's a wrestler, a very very good wrestler, who is good at avoiding damage.

I was thinking about this. While I think your suggestion is a bit of a straw man (I don't know of anyone who says Maynard had KO power), people do think of him as being a powerful puncher, despite only two T/KO victories in his career. I think it's because:

1) He looks strong. He's huge for the weight class and built like an anvil.
2) When he punches people, they get either knocked down or off balance because he throws a lot of power punches and doesn't throw a lot of jabs. He throws a lot of lead hooks and uppercuts.
3) He twice punched the crap out of Frankie Edgar on the biggest stage of his career. Obviously, he didn't finish him, but he not only knocked him down, but the momentum from some of his punches knocked Edgar all over the ring.

And yet Carlos Condit is interim WW champ. Clay tried the same gameplan, but failed in his execution.

Hopefully Clay will go back to mad-dogging it now that his title dreams have been crushed once again.

Keep picking, it makes these threads pretty fun, and it is not like a thread over at an MMA site. For the most part nobody rubs anybody else's nose in their shiatty picks, so you can go with your gut, or who you WANT to win, not just the numbers. All that, and it helps you keep up to date and educated on all the fighters and how they are doing.

Let me clarify, for big guys they're in much greater shape than the average guy walking around, but for fighters they seem below par.

No you didn't need to clarify. I don't get sick of the mouth, but the quality of fighters beneath UFC is a pretty steep drop off. They are still entertaining and can be mismatched enough to make for some great KO's though.

The Lamas / Hioki fight was pretty good (high 5 on that pick) The second of the facebook prelims with Miller was great but you probably can't watch it. And you wanted Guida to win but after tonight he isn't worth wishing for. It was disgusting. Cub Swanson / Pearson was good too.

I hate the Diaz bros, was rooting for Condit, and even think he got the win there. However, if you can't see the parrallels between Guida's gameplan and Condit's, with the admission that Guida failed to properly execute it, then you're deluding yourself. Winning a UFC title in certain divisions is not about 100% bringing the attack, it's about circling away, out pointing your opponent, but also hitting them hard enough to keep them at bay and stuffing their takedowns.

It's a valid strategy within the rules, but let's not pretend everyone frustrated by it is a "Diaz nuthugger" or that it means a guy trying to execute that strategy is putting his full effort into trying to get a stoppage.

Guida tried to play that game and failed. I fully expect to see him back to his old self in his next fight or two.

Possibly. I don't think I saw that fight. Wasn't that the one that was in Dubai or somewhere, that was on in the early afternoon? I think it was also the card when Edgar won the title, which I believe is the reason he never developed the drawing power of other title holders.

He might as well've brought a bicycle into the cage. It was pretty farking bad. He was literally running several times. Literally.

I like Guida, but farking Greg Jackson needs to be punted from the sport. Dana should treat Jackson like he did Golden Glory and ban any fighter that is affiliated with that camp from fighting. No worries, they would still be in the UFC. They would just ditch Jackson and go to an actual fight camp, hopefully. With my luck as a fan, they would all just star training with Jon Fitch.

Your plan is ballsy, but I like it. The thing is, it's hard to fault guys who win, GSP for example. It's a fine line, I guess, between fighting smart and fighting boring/running. Dana's done ballsier things, but I worry about how his health is going to affect him, the UFC, and MMA.

NorCalLos: Mixolydian Master: NorCalLos: libranoelrose: violentsalvation: And you wanted Guida to win but after tonight he isn't worth wishing for

So much this.

I hope the ref giving a warning for running away from your opponent will become a new trend in the UFC.

The only other time I remember seeing that is Houston Alexander vs. Kimbo Slice. I don't recall seeing Houston Alexander since then.

Wasn't Anderson Silva warned or carded in his Demian Maia fight, for running and not engaging?

Possibly. I don't think I saw that fight. Wasn't that the one that was in Dubai or somewhere, that was on in the early afternoon? I think it was also the card when Edgar won the title, which I believe is the reason he never developed the drawing power of other title holders.

From Wiki: In the fifth round, Silva's lack of action prompted referee Dan Miragliotta to warn Silva for his conduct.

Yeah, it was the Dubai fight. It was right after some mystery middle eastern investor bought ten percent of the company, so they had a fight over there, and then Anderson went on to completely embarrass the UFC. Dana said he wanted to fire him, but was overridden by the Fertittas.

Are we gonna farkin' fight?!

What? Guida is one of my favorite fighters. His fights are ALWAYS good. I have to watch that first.

Oh he has always been entertaining, until tonight. Tonight was backpedaling and running away, it was tiring for the viewers. It was the same unpredictable hop-around jackrabbit Guida, but he was stuck in reverse tonight.

Mixolydian Master: Wasn't Anderson Silva warned or carded in his Demian Maia fight, for running and not engaging?

I don't know but that was the Anderson Silva fight that turned me off on him too. But in that fight Anderson was in control. He was just toying with Maia. Like a cat and a mouse in the same cage, killing him softly, with his paws ♫

Nah, Dana doesn't actually have to ban Jackson from UFC. But if he puts the threat in the air, the tactics would change, I'm sure.

Well that was a huge disappointment. I actually fast forwarded through part of a Clay Guida fight.

I tried to pick some underdogs tonight and (mostly) failed miserably. I'm saving my good picks for tomorrow night, when I can watch live and take part in the thread :-)

Going to go watch the rest of the fights ( I saw a BIG blood stain!). See everyone tomorrow.

Fight Metric from tonight's main event

The striking was very close, 2 rounds each with one virtually even. Maynard had a few more strikes overall and a higher percentage, won the takedowns 1-0, but with way more attempts. I think he won the fight on "aggression."

It will be good to have you back in a thread during the fight. :) Take care.

Watching Inside MMA and they are saying that Dana was pushing for the surgery, they didn't say if he had it already.

Jensaarai: the biggest redneck here: Jensaarai: styckx: Knowing Dana enough.. I bet he is FUMING after that performance.. He expects nothing but 100% from his main eventers and not an asshole running away for 5 rounds.

And yet Carlos Condit is interim WW champ. Clay tried the same gameplan, but failed in his execution.

Hopefully Clay will go back to mad-dogging it now that his title dreams have been crushed once again.

Puhhhhleeeeze. No group of fans is more ignorant and pathetic than Diaz nuthuggers. Seriously, you people are pathetic.

/fu*k being nice all the time

No, I don't see any parralels at all in consistently resetting in the middle of the ring and outstriking your opponent in a busy fight and arguably taking round four 10-8 with going full Caleb Starnes. They're not similar one tiny little bit.

Mixolydian Master: NorCalLos: libranoelrose: NorCalLos: It was awful.

Downloading it now.

I'm curious to see whether I remembered it accurately. Did he actually get warned or was it just a horribly blatant retreat that was greeted by news. I'm picturing Herb Dean warning him.

With my luck as a fan, they would all just star training with Jon Fitch.

lolwut

Check the stats, Jackson fighters are better finishers than any of the other big camps. Did you like the Cub Swanson fight last night? When you have that many big names, you're going to get some duds. And those are the ones people remember.

Still, a VERY disappointing fight.

Condit outstruck Diaz in a busy fight is what I was talking about. That comparison is Looney Tunes.

Guida got closer to Starnes than anyone since.

Sorry for the confusion.

Guida barely was outstruck by Maynard. I really think the difference is everyone (including me) expects Guida to fight a certain way, so the difference was EXTREMELY noticeable.

I can't think of a recent fight that was more disappointing. I couldn't wait to get home from work last night to watch it, expecting a great fight.
