O Raelly?

Well, good luck. I don't think it'll go over super well.

I love Raelians.

They're a lot more fun than other religions.

While the sentiment is good, I think there's a certain group who will be quite vocal in their opposition.

You know, in Buddhist countries it's still used right?

Well, considering the swastika didn't kill anybody, I don't see the problem. China and the Soviets killed TONS of people, and they had stars on their flags. We didn't pop the stars off Old Glory, though. The Nazis had a lot of eagles too. We still kept ours.

I don't see why the swastika, which is actually highly stylized on the Nazi flag and easily reversed in spin to look different, is still taboo. Especially considering how little taboo the Nazis themselves actually have. I mean this:

is freakin' funny. Not horrible or condoning anything that happened in the 20th century. It's just a silly image maro and a kid with no idea what he's wearing.

But somehow the swastika is still considered the sole property of the Nazis. It's sad there's not more groups trying to take it back, really. In a generation or two, it could be re-assimilated and racists will have to find some other tattoo to be really offensive.

I hope that more groups like this spring up. The swastika has been around pre-recorded history, and because 12 years there were some evil dudes who used it as a symbol of hate, the swastika is automatically associated with this evil. Its time for us to take the swastika away from the Nazi's

It wasn't just some evil dudes. Hitler was the ultimate bad guy. Stalin and Mao may have killed a lot more people, but they killed their own people (not saying that isn't as bad, but for the average person, it doesn't have the same terror). Hitler conquered other nations, and killed their people. And he did it so well that it took the combined forces of England, Russia, and the US years to stop him. He's the closest thing we've ever had to a Sauron in real life, and the swastika is the symbol most closely associated with him. The swastika can not be taken back until long after WWII is just another boring footnote in a long ago history.

Maybe. In Japan, it's a centuries old marker for Buddhist temples. The Nazi symbol is reversed and diagonal. After about ten minutes, it looks totally different than a normal swastika forever.

Look at this map of Kyoto: Link At first the three temples will make you say "ZOMG NAZIS!" But then, any rational person will look closer and then BOOM! "Oh yeah, different thing."

Why should anyone intentionally try to re-purpose any symbols? They mean what they mean. Just because they can and do change with time does not mean intentionally changing them is a valuable activity.

So... WHY?

Just because the swastika now has well defined negative connotations? I like having symbols with well defined connotations available, both positive and negative. It's useful for conveying a wide range of ideas to other people.

As an ex-Buddhist, I sympathize with people who have historical ties to the symbol, and I think it's healthy for those people to educate others about why the symbol is engraved on their ancient temples and prayer bells. New organizations and cults should just find a new farking symbol.

I remember my father showing me the old swastika engraved Luger he got from my grandfather when I was young. I haven't seen it since, being that it's obviously something that he's not particularly proud of, but it's technically a family heirloom, so he's held onto it. I also remember seeing him (my grandfather) with his shirt off around the same time, and the giant, wrinkled and faded swastika on the right side of his chest.

say what you will about the nazis... but you have to admit they knew what they were doing when it came to aesthetics.

2012-06-22 07:33:08 PM
Why would that be cool? It still has those positive connotations in Asia, and it hardly had any connotations in the West before the Nazis co-opted it. Even in Asia it doesn't really have any MEANING other than being generically holy, and sort of a good luck charm.

That's just a false distinctions that people have tried to make since Hitler screwed things up for the Buddhists/Jains/Hindus. The direction of the swastika doesn't matter, and the kind the Nazis used were as widely used as the other kind until the Nazis started using them.

But the swastika is a simple geometric shape.

Search high and low for all the complex symbols you want, there's only so many simple ones.

Also it's nice have a project. Atheists like to take religious references away. Street preachers like the get people fired up. I like to take things back.

It was over seventy (70) years ago, man, and it lasted less than a decade-ish; prior to that the symbol has been used for hundreds if not thousands of years unhindered with coordinated, supreme violence? Bottom line: good outweighs the bad in a generation or two, friend, as memories die away. The only way to defeat evil is to take its power away. The longer we ascribe evil power to this human symbol, the longer it will hold evil power over our minds. Wake up!

Take your/our mind back, please.

Thank you.

Stalin was a Georgian who was responsible for deaths of millions of Ukrainians, etc. Many of the components of the USSR were conquered peoples. Look at all the countries that exist again since communism fell. They aren't Russian.

The reason he doesn't catch heat like Hitler imo is that he happened to be on the victorious side. Also I dont think the west really new the extent of what was going on in the USSR in the twenties and thirties until long after it happened. With the Nazis the ovens were all there for the world to see in the present time.

I agree with your last statement though. At least in the west its connotation with nazis isn't going anywhere for a long time, no matter how many hot bikini clad UFO weirdo chicks want to take it back.

The problem isn't a lack of people aware of its history, once upon a time.

The problem is the amount of people still using it as a symbol of hate.

You're going to avoid going into the pool if one group, no matter how small or misguided, keeps shiatting in it.
