FTFA: Breivik has evoked the "principle of necessity", claiming his attacks were "cruel but necessary" to protect Norway against a "Muslim invasion".

i.imgur.com

I guess Mr. Breivik should be glad that Norway does not invoke its own "Principle of Necessity" in crucifying him upside and naked with his anus and scrotum attached to a series of car batteries wired into random Norwegian homes, activativted by large, red, jolly, candy-like buttons.
I'd press the button myself while fapping repeatedly but I'm a major league asshole that way.

I've been called worse.

The way I understand it:

If he is sane, he can only get the maximum prison sentence of 21 years.

If they declare him insane, they can hold him indefinitely.

So of course the defense lawyer is going to go for the "sane" defense.

Ehh
2012-06-22 04:46:58 PM
Maybe they can run some sort of test to see if he's sane or not. Something involving doctors, stainless steel implements, and soundproofing.

I think the Breiviks biggest problem was it was a little over the top. I know the his message really needed to be said but did he really need to kill more than 20 kids to get the point across? I would assume the brain washed kids would have got the message by then. As always, the radical liberals try to paint this hero as insane.

I think the lawyer is just performing per the client's wishes. He's the one who doesn't want people to think he's insane, and he admits responsibility for the killings.

Well, declaring him sane does let him out of jail in 20-some-odd years instead of life. So I can see where they are coming from. Can't be locking up people for their ENTIRE lives now.

I dunno, this one feels really forced to me. I don't think I could score it more than 3/10, myself. I guess we'll have to see if he/she gets any takers.

I'd declare him insane. That way he has to spend the rest of his life with the really crazy people instead of getting more privileges that he would get in a regular prison.

Either way, he will never be this side of a security wall.

As Breivik prepared to begin his last statement, a number of people walked out of the courtroom.

"We have no need to hear more about what he has to say," Trond Henry Blattman, leader of a victim's support group, told reporters.

European courts are weird. That kind of lack of respect for the court system would cost them like 500$/person in contempt of court fines.

Means he was mentally competent when he made and executed his plan, and thus legally responsible for the act. In this case it's probably an attempt to get him into prison, where he'll get out eventually and can derive some protection from whatever their version of the Aryan nation is. If he's judged medically insane with that level of violent history, he'll never see the light of day again and will spend the rest of his miserable life in a small isolation cell when he's not being used for experimental medicine.

A man of such awsome stupidity, he even objects to his own defence counsel. An over-zealous, trumped up little squirt..
An incompetent vending-machine repairman with a Napoleon complex, who commanded as much respect and affection from his fellow crew members as Long John Silver's parrot...
Who would put this man, this joke of a man, a man who couldn't outwit a used tea bag, in a position of authority where he could wipe out an entire crew? Who? Only a yoghurt. This man is not guilty of manslaughter. He's only guilty of being Arnold J. Rimmer. That is his crime. It is also his punishment. Defence rests.

So many young innocent lives taken for what? I'm not one to judge, but he should have the same fate he gave to his victims. A bullet to the head.. let his god judge him.

Show me an American judge who would fine the families of victims for such an action. A real judge.

FYI- he can still be locked up indefinitely.

It is a real shame they won't house in general population. Expensive, too. He will have all sorts of social time with staff.

xtreme13: So many young innocent lives taken for what? I'm not one to judge, but he should have the same fate he gave to his victims. A bullet to the head.. let his god judge him.

The answer to the question is because of religion.

Glad others have pointed out that this is what he wanted. He quite possibly is insane, depending on however sanity is judged in a legal sense. But he wants to appear sane. He needs to appear sane. For him this would mean that no only does he have better prospects of an eventual release from prison, but that he can then stand up and say that his actions were those of a rational man. I would guess it would be his way of further promoting his cause. Like saying, 'I did it because it had to be done, not because I was out of my mind. As a sane man I knew this was the only way to help my country'.

It will be his final way of getting what he wants.

I would like to see him declared insane but mostly I just want justice to be served appropriately. There is no sense in making him a martyr by bending the rules to make sure he is punished severely. If he is treated fairly and according to the law as appropriate it takes away some of his power.

The only way to beat someone like that is to rise above them.

If we had the technology to do so, I rather his body sold off to donors while his brain was kept alive in a jar. Let him live out of the rest of his life in the complete isolation of his own mind.

"If he is treated fairly and according to the law as appropriate it takes away some of his power."

I don't know if I agree with that.

I can never decide if it's better to put would-be martyrs in jail, or kill them outright. I think it depends on the potential level of martyrdom. This guy is a punk-ass. He's not going to be a martyr. Just kill him and be done with it.

The death penalty was *invented* for unrepentant idiots like this guy. Give him what he deserves.

What's really crazy is that he thought killing kids at a summer camp would somehow advance his cause of preventing Muslim encroachment into Norway. He really needs to explain himself better if he expects to be taken seriously.

2012-06-22 05:44:31 PM

He killed 70 people. Odds are at least one of the victims knew someone in the prison system be it an inmate, guard, warden etc. I say figure out who that family member is, send this jerk there & shut out the lights for ten minutes.

Repeat every the day until he is a pile of goo.

Marcus Aurelius: His argument might carry just a little more weight if he had actually killed a few Muslims.

He wasn't trying to scare muslims, he was trying to scare the liberal multi-culturalists. His beef was with them, so that was his target. The kids make perfect sense since they were at a Labour Party's indoctrination camp. This draws the maximum attention to his idea's, namely that the Labour Party is encouraging the country into getting over run by a muslim horde.

2012-06-22 05:58:57 PM
There, he spent more than an hour methodically shooting and killing another 69 people, mostly teenagers.

Teenagers huh, should have gone for justifiable homicide instead, no jury in the world would convict him. Just bring in a gaggle and give them some iPhones and force the jury to listen for 15 minutes and he would have walked. Maybe bring in Justin Bieber with an iPhone if the jury was deadlocked.
