Some people like to get urinated upon. Therefore, there's no universal consensus on whether or not it's rude to urinate upon a random stranger.

Nope, I usually keep to myself and don't lump people together one way or the other.

Thanks.

I'm not trying to be rude, but have you ever dated a guy who catcalled at you?

Have you ever had an experience with a male in society, that in your head, didn't end with him trying to bed you against your will?

Why do you think women who are offended by catcalling are crazy?

2012-06-22 03:53:00 PM
C'mon people, we all know harassment is determined by the relative hotness of the subjects involved. Construction workers are usually dirty fat middle aged guys so any indication of attraction is obvious harassment. If they happen to be super hot model type guys then they are obviously just paying generous compliments. Know your relative hot ratios and then you will know when its ok to compliment or even look at someone.

Since this sign references construction workers, we know the ratio is going to be off, thus its offensive. Its pretty simple really. Bad move by some Ad Wizard.

PillsHere: Let me ask a question for those who think women are being ridiculous for feeling threatened or annoyed by this. What if the girl is 15 and she's not wearing anything provocative, just jeans and a t-shirt. Let's say she might look a little older, but she's still 15 years old. Do you think it's ridiculous for her to feel threatened by a 40 year old man who out-weighs her by 50-100 pounds cat-calling to her on a city street at night?

That depends, how is her jiu jitsu?

9beers: Balchinian: [i.imgur.com image 640x569]

So damn true. Don't have your tits hanging half out of your shirt and then biatch when they get noticed.

Umm...that is not really the point of the cartoon. The point is that standards of what is socially appropriate (not just in apparel, but in general) are not just different for women than for men, but that those standards are arbitrary and based on unequal consideration.

2012-06-22 03:54:44 PM

On Balance: Honest question: Just what are you cat-calling guys going for anyway?
I mean, what's your desired outcome or best case scenario?

I don't think you can generalize to one response. Some people like to hear themselves. Some people want to falsely prove to the other guys around him that he's a manly nongay man. Some people are just looking for a reaction. Some people are looking for interaction. And some people want to follow you home and do things that he knows your 12 cats can't testify to in a court of law. Although, I think that last one also qualifies more simply as "interaction".

Look, your best reaction is to ignore them. Most of them are used to being ignored - you disappear into a crowd of many, many women who ignore them. Some may call you a biatch. Does that bother you, that one of the lowest forms of society called you a biatch? Does their response really mean anything to you? Of course not. Because if it did, you would find the catcall to be a nice compliment and maybe even thank them for it.
Just ignore them and move on with your life.

/But don't go gettin' raped on me, OK?

Hello, I'm Dantes, and I like it when a guy indicates via whistle or comment that I am attractive.

WhippingBoy: If the actions of a random stranger (assuming they're not overtly threatening) make you feel anything other than momentarily uncomfortable or embarrassed, then I suggest that you no longer venture out into the big, scary world--you'll be eaten alive on a constant basis.

If some jerk's insensitive, impulsive actions (like whistling at you, or catcalling, etc.) "ruin your day" or make you feel subhuman, then I suggest you've got issues that cannot possibly be solved by removing offending signs or by preventing construction workers from acting like jerks.

And I agree with you. I've had guys yell all kinds of things to me and even when I thought it was a weirdo comment it has never been like something stupid shouted at an intersection has ever made me afraid, or had any effect longer than a few seconds.

voodoolady: I'm not trying to be rude, but have you ever dated a guy who catcalled at you?

When I was in college I worked summers in the construction zone holding the big STOP sign. One day a guy drove through and made some dumb comment about the asphalt making me look hot and asked if I would have a beer with him. I did, and he was a totally harmless guy who traded rounds with me and never tried anything sketchy.

As I said before, I had grown men cat calling me at MUCH younger than 15. It was terribly scary when these things happened, and very confusing for myself. I was so horrribly ashamed. And this was in a nice suburban neighborhood.

I personally feel that if you don't want your mother or sister or daughter to be treated that way (and I assume most guys wouldn't appreciate men catcalling their female relatives), then you shouldn't do it to female strangers either.

Therin lies a flaw. Typically, a catcall is not meant as a rude gesture. It's barbaric and (deniably) unsolicited, yes, but in its rawest form, it's a compliment. When you don't respond to his compliment, in his mind, you ARE a biatch. Keep in mind the type of person who does a catcall as well. We share the same genetic makeup, but socially these people (and anyone else who is abusive in any way) are not the same species. This man is not going to change. And you aren't either. I'd like to think if I were a woman in that situation, I'd be proud to be a biatch to him and not even give him the slightest hint of any visible validation that he exists...unless you can somehow mop the sidewalk with his face.

I think the billboard is funny. I am not at all offended.

Those who are offended only feel that way because they fear that they will no longer be whistled at.

I am 40 (I will be 41 in August); I hope to continue to be whistled at for at least 5 more years.

Ladies: get over it. This billboard has nothing to do with rape, women hating, sexual oppression, or any other issue which you wish to connect it to. It is simply fun.
If you want to concern yourself with real dangers to women, go to any news site of your choice and look up Sudan, Darfur, and other related ideas. Because, truthfully, we are very lucky to live in a country where the sexual implications of a billboard are our biggest fear.

ciberido: I'm sure sexual harassment of women by women must happen

Oh lord yes it does. One of my many past jobs was in private security. I was sexually harassed like CRAZY. No, not from the guys (okay, one guy. It ended up being his last shift) but from one gay woman. I don't know if she was threatened by a straight feminine-looking female in her territory or what, but she'd call me flower and just be harassing and demeaning in general. It was bad. Fortunately, I got promoted and she left in a huff over it, so there.

No I didn't report it. This was years ago, and things were different. Being one of a very few females in a male dominated workplace, and having to earn being treated like one of the guys, the fallout from reporting being harassed by a woman would have been worse that the harassment.

Genevieve Marie: dickfreckle: I'm a guy, so take this for what it's worth, but when I dress well I do it precisely to look handsome and attract positive attention. Otherwise I'd just wear sweatpants everywhere. Women are no different even if the attention they want is from each other.

Respectfully, your comment is incredibly naive.

Yea, you can't wear sweatpants to the office most of the time. Also: wanting to look nice to the people you know, or to your partner, or to people you're interested in IS NOT the same thing as wanting random people to yell at you on the street.

No one is denying that being cat-called is annoying. I'm simply trying to understand why anyone can claim that they decorate themselves for any reason other than attention. You have to take the good with the bad. If you dress up for your husband, you're still dressing to impress. Other people will notice and it's ridiculous to be angry at strangers over it. Be irritated with their manners, but don't claim that you're just "trying to go about your day" with no thought to your appearance.

Checking your profile (because holy sh*t, there are girls on the internet!?), I'm reminded that you live in New Orleans. I used to live on St. Ann St. - arguably the gayest neighborhood in America. I was cat-called all of the time. Unless someone physically blocked my path with their compliment, I took it as random street noise. Why is that a straight guy isn't irritated by his ass being publicly debated on Dauphine St. but women can't handle being an object? We're all objects. Being offended by it is just silly.

In other words, this whole story makes me want to shrug and say, "Get over it." Also, no one is angered by the stereotyping of construction workers.
