I'm guessing paying some Pharma company billions for a rush on a vaccine is the only way we are going to survive?

xtragrind: I'm guessing paying some Pharma company billions for a rush on a vaccine is the only way we are going to survive?

no. The human race would survive flu. The vaccine will simply reduce the number of deaths. Or do you want a repeat of 1918?

Vaccines offer by far the least ROI for pharmaceutical companies. They are cheap, effective, and being they have been under production for over 60 years its not difficult.

/absolutely stupid when people refer to vaccines as a way for big pharma to swindle cash.

H5N1. Not H1N1.

H1N1 = Swine Flu. H5N1 = Bird Flu.

H5N1. Not H1N1.

H1N1 = Swine Flu. H5N1 = Bird Flu.

Not exactly. H = Hemagluttinin and N = Neuraminidase
There are various types of each of these chemicals, which act as binders to cells. Theoretically, any Hemagluttinin (H1, H2, H3 etc) could be found in any animal's specific flu, although, so far only H1, 2 and 3 have been found in human flu viruses.

They don't tell you what type of flu it is, they tell you what type of receptor/binder it is.

Think of it this way, if H5N1 avian influenza became easily transmissible in humans, it wouldn't be called bird flu anymore (well, it probably would in the media for several years, but you get my point, I hope).

Also, three mutations away is a retarded story to sensationalize. They have to be the right three mutations, without having other mutations that nullify the 3 necessary ones. This article (as well as the published paper) are hyper-sensationalizing a not-nearly-so-important aspect of the findings. The author of the paper just wanted his 15 minutes...and he got them.
