We have to wait that long? I'm betting some industrious person could cut this back to 3 days and then we wouldn't have to listen to all the whining.

Yep. The Eurozone is hosed no matter what they do. There's not enough money in the world to fund a European cradle-to-grave welfare state when your demographics are crashing.

Why can't they just keep borrowing money? Not enough? Just print more. That will work.

I'm admittedly ignorant on the subject, but why are countries not bailing out of the Euro at this point? For those that can make their economy work, I don't see the upside of staying.

Can Greece, Spain, and Italy just crash and get it over with?

That's why I'm seeing it now, while they're still spending money on the landscaping, and before they sell off their historic architecture for scrap.

How much does the UK export to the Eurozone?

It's a bit of a sunk cost deal. Those countries in it have a large stake in staying as they've got loans out to the other countries that are failing. At some point, they may need to cut their losses - however, right now it seems to be a better bet to try and fix the failure countries (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain) if possible.

Because for some reason Germany keeps sending them truckloads of money for staying in.

The Germans will save them, like they always have.

in theory, no borders, no tariffs, no currency exchange rates, more stability
in reality, they should never have let greece into the Euro in the first place.

without federal tax collection and federal punishment for tax evaders you get greece.

Coming to a Europe near you: The United States of Germany. (but all they really want is the Sudetenland. that will appease them.)

kim jong-un: How much does the UK export to the Eurozone?

Yeah exactly, it's not in anyone's interests for the E zone to disintegrate... not short term anyway but I'm beginning to wonder where the wisest long term interest lies here.
But it is getting embarrassing just being close to the Euro, it's like when a friend is acting the twat in public and you want to say "I'm not with him, I don't know him."

Biv: "For those that can make their economy work, I don't see the upside of staying."

Because leaving is a huge risk with no *political* upside.

The economies that would most likely come out alright on the other side are doing Ok anyway.
So if they try and fail, the party is dead.
And if they try and succeed, they went from Ok, through unavoidable turmoil and cost, to merely emerge as still Ok on the other side.

Political rule results in policies that reflect on what is politically advantageous, not what is right and good.
It's a matter of trust/theory that what is good will track what is politically advantageous, but history doesn't provide much data to suggest that's really true.
Certainly not for anything approaching a long-term view.

So no-one's *choosing* to leave the Euro; not until nations begin being forced out.

As some economic/political observers have noted in the last few years, Germany seems to have finally figured out that the way to "own" most of Europe is through economic methods, not military.
