My brother is a fireman and captain of our hometown paramedic squad, and is a SciFi geek with a great sense of humor. I just e-mailed him to see if he was in on this.

Maine is a state of awesome. Now if people from New Jersey would stop trying to bring New Jersey with them, we'd all be happy.

Natives have gotten pretty tolerant of folks from away. It's just when people move to Maine to "get away from it all/the big city/suburbs" but then try to get the zoning laws changed to develop the shiat out the place and "What do you mean I have to drive half an hour to go to the grocery store!?! Let's put in a strip mall right next to the lake, right here." that Natives get tetchy.

And yet we have government agencies woefully unprepared for the inevitable:
Robot Uprising
Dragon Attack
Unicorn Stampede
Djinn Infestation
Triffid Outbreak
Summer Predator Prevention

And if you think for a MOMENT, even a split second, that those things are sillier or somehow less genuine than zombies - you are a complete idiot.

This zombie bullshiat is out of hand. I get it, the Soviet Union is gone. There are kids now who never even knew it... so the classic robot uprising/communism euphemism is a little passe.

But everything that needed to be said about zombies has been said. Yes, the idea that democracy and mob rule can run amok is awful. That out of 5 people, 4 people can vote and eat the least one, that sometimes it's hard to trust your fellow man because they can turn on you... blah blah blah.... it's been done. What possible profound point is left to make with zombies as the vehicle?

I like zombie movies and zombie stuff in general, it's fine... some people like orks or elves, that's fine too. BUT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE CONCERNED WITH A ZOMBIE OUTBREAK!

/Seriously disappointed with the government
//This is worse than CDC having to say that bath salts guy wasn't a zombie. FFS.

It's a great way to get people to pay attention to disaster preparedness. The real stuff is scary so people hide their heads in the sand about it until it really happens and then it's too late. Zombies are fictional (bath salts excluded) and therefore fun. And really, who doesn't want to spend an afternoon preparing for the zombie apocalypse?

Dude, is was just a imaginary disease to work with so they could run general disease outbreak drills with the emergency responders units. The organizers were just having a joke to make the obligatory drill a little more fun.

Chill.

Seriously.

Jerusalem?

Because last time I checked the Resurrection is a staple of the Abrahamic religions... I'm going to say it.

Shooting zombies is anti-Semitic, probably anti-Christian.

Resurrection of the dead...

Or is that just a part of most people's religion they don't think about anymore. Like, not being a jerk to each other and helping each other out.

2012-06-22 01:14:35 PM
Um... you guys do know that no one is expecting actual zombies, right?

"Zombie uprising" is just a fun, low stress generic fictional "emergency." Substitute the actual disaster of your choice.

Some of the actual shiat that could happen... well, it's fecking terrifying if you think too hard on it, so people shut down and don't pay attention to it. They hide behind "It'll never happen, no need ot prepare." because they don't want to spend energy imagining it happening.

No one older than twelve who leaves the basement occasionally expects actual zombies to show up. They're not a real threat. Therefore, they're fun. So people will get their heads into the idea of disaster preparedness (they do know deep down that this is necessary, not for the zombies but for the next real Bad Thing) in a fun, non-stressful way.

2012-06-22 01:16:12 PM
Americans love zombies, because we hate each other.
And the government loves zombies, because there aren't any politically-acceptable "bad guys".
And the media loves zombies, because there aren't any fiscally-acceptable "bad guys".

Zombies are simply a local-maxima.

If the world changes, maybe something objectively better will show up.
But in the meantime there's no real reason for anyone to even look.

Yeah, relax guy's. Civil insurrection brought on by a disaster wouldn't be much different from a zombie outbreak. A simulated zombie outbreak would be much more fun to participate in though.

Either way, if it really happened, I'm pretty sure your insurance company ain't gonna cover it.

So because there are scary things in the world we should dumb everything down so it's easier to digest? And we're going to do drills to stop what... a fictional disease who's vector is being bitten? In case of.... super rabies?

It's a dumbing down of serious issues and society is ill served by it. There are certain realities that need be encouraged and scary shiat that needs to be dealt with. It's nonsense, it's stacking the deck so we can win. Didn't the CDC and various local government use UV sensitive staph to track an outbreak a while ago? And every city basically failed miserably. So we need to deal with that. Improve infrastructure, reign in this blight of MRSA in our hospitals, that sort of thing. Actually push society forward and be better.

I realize no one gets to play dress up, but honestly? F**k that. These things cost MONEY than can be BETTER SPENT on facing those hard realities. How much do you think the total bill for this was? Why not buy copper fixtures or other anti-bacterial things for the local hospital. Why not actually make life better? Just the wasted gas for people to drive to this thing could have been to a better cause.

So no, I don't like this kind of nonsense, it's deleterious to the species.

So what article were you reading? And the article is crazy short. Hell, here's the full text:
First responders and emergency agencies converged in Bangor to fend off the devastation of a zombie apocalypse.

While there wasn't a real outbreak plaguing people, the gathering served as a training session on how to respond to an epidemic if one spread through Maine.

In the mock situation, disease, chaos and the walking dead took over. While the zombie apocalypse wasn't real pandemics like the H1N1 virus in 2009 and the SARS outbreak in 2002 have proven to authorities they need to be prepared for anything.

Eight communities from Eastern Maine participated in the training. "

As I above in the thread, my brother is a fireman and captain of the paramedics squad for my hometown and has been doing this for many, many years. They do these training exercises because first responders need to know immediately what to do to save lives and not fark up the situaiton any further.

Example, on 9/11 his watch commander panicked and brought all units in and locked the station down. If any terrorist were to give a damn about Maine, putting all your emergency response units in one well-known place, where they can't help people, is the definition of stupid.

They always run bus crash drills, drills with different types of fires, water rescues, etc. because with firemen, paramedics, and police, and in this instance also hospital personal and city officials, knowing exactly what to do when they hit the ground is literally the difference between life and death.

So if you want to save your tax dollars, then when you have a heart attack from being wound so tight, make sure they DON'T dial 9-11, cause, hey, those guys being adequately trained is just a waste of your money.

Researcher:

My point being these guys deal with accidents and illness everyday, but big things; disasters, epidemics, etc. are outside their daily experience. Being prepared on how to handle large crisis so that the organization flows smoothly together to deal with it is essential. You can't get that from reading a book. You have have to run the drill, see what works and what doesn't, and get the boots on the ground folks trained on proper procedure.

You start screaming about "wasting money" on getting vital training to first responders (after their programs have been cut and they get attacked for being "paid too much"), and yeah, some people are going to get a little irate.

I'm not sure why you don't understand that they used "zombie" as just a name to give to random disease so that they could practice epidemic outbreak procedures. It was a way to make it fun and memorable for folks. It didn't cost anymore than if they had called it a "Dengue Fever" or "SARS."

So basically, you're pissy because someone had a little fun with it?
