Yes. It might scare them. The first time. Then hopefully someone sensible will explain how it all works, and they will just jump next time, like the rest of us.

If you've had a steak in britain you know its nothing to get excited about. Can't buy bone in. might kill you. can't get medium rare. health and safety! can't get a good cut, might hurt you.

this is america in about 20 years.

Since this is the daily fail, I'm guessing there is more to the story than is being reported.

That's a bit overkill for a starter pistol, isn't it

Traditional starting pistol banned in UK races because sound might scare children. British citizens nod in agreement and go back to cutting their steaks vegan soy patties with a spoon.

Steak is bad for you, citizen. Plus, it might offend Hindu citizens of the UK for you to eat beef.

You know, I learned something today.

There is no such thing as thunder in Great Britain. Evidently their lightening strikes emit the soothing sound of a wave crashing on the shore.

My grandfather fought across North Africa with Monty, spent 5 years in a German POW camp. Escaped a few times.

His government wouldn't allow him to own a gun, no matter how rough the streets in his neighborhood got. He was allowed a starters pistol, thought it might scare them off. This is a man who was permanently disabled defending Britain.

They lost so many of their 'manly' men in WWII that the only ones left were the cowards and chickenshiats. Those 'men' in turn have created this society.

Sad.

How is that an overkill? Would you feel more comfortable if it was bright orange and played "God Save the Queen" when the trigger is pulled?

Nice old Enfield.

If the barrel's been plugged and the chambers "reduced" to accept only blanks, that's a pretty standard mod for a starter pistol. We had one like it at my high school. After WWII you could buy those things for $20 fully modified for such use.

."Srsly. The nation that gave us Nelson, Churchill, and Lennon reduced to sniveling suburbanites. A shame, really."

Lennon? Not even in the same league as those 2. Lennons idea of action: stay in bed. Nelson's: ignoring an order to press home an attack. Churchhill's: creating a group with a mission statement of "set Europe ablaze"

I see people listing Churchill, but lets not forget the OTHER British Churchill of WW2

badassoftheweek.com

Meet Jack Churchill. He had the only confirmed kill with a bow and arrow in World War 2

From wikipedia:
nicknamed "Fighting Jack Churchill" and "Mad Jack", was a British soldier who fought throughout World War II armed with a longbow, arrows and a Scottish broadsword. He is known for the quote "any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly armed."

if you ban the starter pistol make it something fun like a kazoo, gong, or an AHHH--OOOHHH GAA horn. But if they're scared of a starter pistol, make it even more fun and use an air raid siren.

I got asked for ID to buy some BBQ tongs the other day. An item that requires the person to be buying them to be 16. I'm 26.
As I grudgingly showed my passport.. I had to wonder. Just how in the hell could someone who wasnt Ichi the killer use BBQ tongs as a weapon?
Yeah, I suppose you could give someone a nasty slap with a pair of the blunt, flimsy, aluminium pincers.. but..

Really..? Really england? BBQ tongs..?

Yep, Lennon. His "fark you" attitude was second only to Steve McQueen's when it came to setting the style of the 60s man. As Macca said on many occasions: "He was a real piece of work."

Maybe it's fine, I'm not up to date on starter pistols. But I still think there is more to the story which the Mail isn't reporting, like the guy was brandishing it at the kids or something.

Groupthink much? But I suppose being part of a herd would make it a little difficult to understand how a nation the size of Britain could have such a major cultural impact on the world unless you figure in guys like Lennon, Orwell, Hockney, and Holst. A nation's greatness is not always measured by the military.

Why should anybody bother? I've read numerous Daily Fail articles with this same general premise regarding other supposed "outrageous" health and safety mandates. They're always crap and they always ignore substantial context to craft a narrative that sounds stupid but doesn't hold up under the slightest scrutiny.

Given that history with their garbage, why shouldn't I just dismiss this out of hand?

On the other hand, when I was over in London last year, their cops were actually NICE. I mean, you can ask them how to get to such and such and they'll walk in that direction with you to show you. Not like the cretinous Seal Team Six wannabes over here that think Rambo wasn't tactical enough.

Mixed bag I guess.

What is wrong with that place? Seriously, what adult thinks this is a good idea? Virtually every family I know has had their kids out shooting something since the tykes were in kindergarten.

My kids have always had age-appropriate weapons. Airsoft guns led to BB shooters and wrist rockets, which led to 22s, and then on to shotguns and learning to use our Glock. The older one really enjoys archery, too.

Kids who grow up not knowing how to properly use weapons have not had a full life. They can drop the hobby later if they like, or continue on to pursue target shooting, hunting, or go off to the military or law enforcement if that's where their desires lie.
