It's all that fluoride in the water.

"But I think that's true. I mean everything has changed. The media has changed. We now give broadcast licenses to philosophies instead of people. People get confused and think there is no difference between news and entertainment. People who project themselves as journalists on television don't know the first thing about journalism. They are just there stirring up a hockey game."

Rep. Ackerman is brilliant. He hit the nail right on the head.

2012-06-22 07:12:46 AM
Modern conservatives are stupider. How can anyone deny it?
Back in the day, when everyone knew the media was "liberal", because, well, that's tautological, the Republicans redefined the word liberal itself to mean "bad. very bad." Then they could attack the media for reporting the news.
Now what do we get? The "lamestream media"? That's the best the heirs of Reagan's spinmeisters can come up with? That's their legacy? That apple didn't even fall in the same orchard.

The people have ALWAYS been incredibly dumb. The difference is that we now live in the age of the internet and 24/7 news stations.

No they haven't asshole. Government is not functional, and America is simply noticing.

Obvious, true but worthy of being said. Of course people haven't physically gotten dumber, like brain damage. It's just a lot of willful ignorance, celebration of anti-intellectualism and apathy. The media isn't helping any.

DamnYankees: Government is not functional

That happens when people are stupid enough to elect candidates whose platform is "government is bad and wrong and should be destroyed".

And who puts people into the government? We vote for dysfunction.

Cue outrage. Stupid people don't like it when you call them stupid, stupid.

If things don't go your way, just blame the people for being better informed than at any other time in history. Yep.

Dear God, this.

Why is an education a bad thing? It used to be a badge of honor and something worthy of respect that you had a college degree. Now conservatives sneer it as "elite academics."

Sure, some of the liberal arts degrees might get sneered, but on average, having a degree was a good thing.

It's mind-bottling.

We need a national broadcasting agency, where they get funding no matter what.

The BBC is a model for us. For profit news is simply and incentive to lie.

Such a good example is take a look at Romney and the congress-critters running around saying Obama should have done something about immigration earlier in his term this is just an pre-election stunt after they blocked the Dream Act with a filibuster and there are very few people out there who know the GOP is just spinning anyway they can and nobody questions them.

"The people have gotten dumber"

I honestly don't see any debatable points raised in that claim. There is plenty of data to back that up.

mitt romney, the guy who proclaimed barack obama spent 'too much time at harvard' spent one year more than obama at harvard.

rick santorum, the guy who proclaimed that wanting kids to go to college is evidence of being a 'snob' spent 10 years in a university setting.

in other words, those sneering are doing what they sneer about - it's more a matter of trying to dumb themselves down so dumb people won't dislike them than almost anything else.

they know their base.

The people get the government they deserve. The people are easily manipulated idiots and have therefor given themselves a dysfunctional government by voting in people whose main platform consists of declaring that the government is broken and the only way to fix it is to break it more.

If you want to argue for policies like "starving the beast" and reductions to services then go ahead and argue that. What we currently have is nothing of the sort.

No. People have access to being informed. Instead, they watch nothing but partisan shrill shows or incompetent corporate media.

Such as? Increased college degree holders? Stagnated, but equal, test scores? Most metrics state people are just as dumb, if not less. Would you be so kind as to cite the plenty of data people have gotten more dumb?

This. It's not even just formal education. A lot of people I know just have no intellectual curiosity at all. I get poked fun at for learning plant names, busting out star charts to look at planets with my son, or reading theology books. You only get one go-round on this little blue ball, and there is so much freakin' stuff to see.

Although based on my performance in Wii Jeopardy with a certain someone lastnight, *I* am certainly getting dumber.

2012-06-22 09:54:03 AM
There are indeed ways in which the people have gotten dumber. Take, for instance, those who have lost all awareness of their philosophy as philosophy, of their culture as culture, of their worldview as a worldview. It's fairly common in groups that hold power for any significant length of time, and it leads to the common lament of why people don't all just agree with them. They wind up constructing elaborate theories of manipulation or misinformation -sometimes even oppression- when there are much simpler answers to be found: that they're simply different people who you have not put sufficient effort into understanding.

Did you happen to catch the Daily Show where they had a professional wrestler give political promos?
Mick Foley starts arguing for and against filibusters around 6:20, piledrives Wyatt Cenac around 9:40

thurstonxhowell: I don't think people are getting dumber. I think dumb people are getting louder.

I think people are just as dumb as ever (such as Headso's race-mixing pic), but the available vectors for transmitting stupid have grown exponentially. In that pic, the only way to transmit dumb from a carrier to a fresh victim was face-to-face, or maybe through a particularlly racist newspaper editorial. Now we've got talk radio and the internet. Stupid today isn't one-at-a-timin', it's mass communicating.

Not to mention the ability of the internet to allow different strains of dumb to intermix, breed, and mutate into new and terrifying depths of ignorance.

Not really. We only elect 1/435th of the House of Representatives. The way our current government set up is almost an example of a Tragedy of the anti-Commons. By everyone voting for their best interests, everyone gets screwed.

That is true. But also, crazy people love politics. No matter where you go, there is always a base level of crazy people at any campaign or political organization. If regular people are too tired, apathetic, or cynical to get involved, the crazy end up running everything.

I'm leaning in this direction. By their very nature, the vast majority of people are stupid and shallow, and they always have been. Opening more channels of communication has just led to the inevitable result of more stupidity being broadcast. Once broadcast, stupidity becomes more socially acceptable, even desirable, and then it is expressed even more openly.

The seeds were always there and haven't changed, they're just growing in more fertile soil now.

People aren't getting dumber; the southern idiots just vote for Republicans now instead of Democrats. The Dems were perfectly fine with bigotry on their side when it helped pass the New Deal.

Are people getting dumber?
I'd say critical thinking and logical analysis are on the wane.
We have access to more information than ever before, some of it valid, with little effort expended to sort it out.
Political discourse is just spin, with little effort to explain what actually happened.
So, in certain areas, yeah we are getting dumber.

2012-06-22 10:35:05 AM
Sadly this guy is correct. And it's being brought about by both parties.

The Democrats are using fools like Jon Stewart to try to dumb down the country by priming idiot kids into thinking that comedy is news and news is comedy.

The Republicans are using fools like the Christian Right to try to dumb down the country by putting up barriers to the dissemination of knowledge in our schools under the auspices of religious freedoms.

So one side is hoping to dumb down the electorate so that more people vote Democrat and the other side is hoping to dumb down the electorate so that more people can be counted as religious.

I've never met Congressman Ackerman but I think he's spot on with his comments in this article.
