TFA: "Since Mitt Romney's father's presidential run in 1968, Americans have become a lot more tolerant of political candidates who are black, Jewish, or female. However, a new poll finds that, since then, many voters remain very much uncomfortable with a Mormon politician"

I'm thinking 18% or more would be uncomfortable with these too.

Is it sekrit muslin?

I would guess most of the 43% would be people who wouldn't vote for him anyway. Christian conservatives will most certainly know what his religion is and right now the majority of them are battling with racism vs. religion and chances are racism will win the day. Mormons are pagans/heretics - period - according to the Bible. Mormons are not Christians These same people who scream that Obama is a Muslim and all Muslims must die are the same people that will vote for a Mormon simply because he is not black. Devout Christians that want a Christian president will not vote for a Mormon no matter how good his hair is. It would be the same as voting for an openly gay man..

This. To fundamentalist Christians, Mormons aren't just another denomination of the Christian church. They're a cult; a false religion. You will have a certain amount of the GOP base who will not vote for a Mormon. That's certainly not to say that they'll vote for Obama instead, but there will be many who simply won't vote at all.

Stolen from the interwebs:

Think of it like a movie. The Torah is the first one, and the New Testament is the sequel. Then the Qu'ran comes out, and it retcons the last one like it never happened. There's still Jesus, but he's not the main character anymore, and the messiah hasn't shown up yet.

Jews like the first movie, but ignored the sequels, Christians think you need to watch the first two, but the third one doesn't count, Moslems think the third one was the best, and Mormons liked the second one so much they started writing fanfiction that doesn't fit with ANY of the series canon.

Unfortunately I'm sure that there are more than 18% of the Americans who won't vote for a black president.

That is brilliant. And basically spot on.

This is the correct attitude. Not because I'm Christian, but because "Back to the Future" and "The Godfather" trilogies both support it.

If they don't they will.

I expect someone will front money pretending to support Obama and start attacking Romney's faith, and October will be spent trying to distance campaign from those ads, rather than talking about the accomplishments of the first term.

What percent don't care about his religion or what it is?

I'm one of those.

If a candidate says their religion will guide their choices... ANY candidate, ANY religion... I'm voting for whoever has the best chance of beating them.

Top Mormon leaders had hired two big-name advertising agencies in 2009, Ogilvy & Mather and Hall & Partners, to find out what Americans think of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Using focus groups and surveys, they found that Americans who had any opinion at all used adjectives that were downright negative: "secretive," "cultish," "sexist," "controlling," "pushy," "anti-gay."

This is the year of the mormon. They are about to be center stage. Well, one of their own will be. And that's a big deal.

I gotta tell you something- this is as big a lie as anything Romney has said on the campaign trail:

Church leaders like Mr. Allen say that the timing and tenor of the campaign have nothing to do with the political campaigns of two Mormons running for president.

Either way you slice it, more people will know a little about the religion by the beginning of November. Sorry mormons, you've good people, but Romney isn't a good candidate.

I have to admit, I'm a lot less comfortable with voting for Mormons since the Prop. 8 fight here in California. Seeing how the church mobilized politically in that would have me looking suspiciously at anybody who claims to be affiliated with them.

You're being intolerant. Bringing up the fact Romney has given millions to an organization (and other organizations) who has spent millions to stop gay marriage is "intolerance". Intolerance of intolerance is the only form of intolerance Republicans can't stand.

Bigotry AND ignorance.

I don't care about what a politician's religion is.

HOWEVER I do care how his religion will reflect his policy decisions. Romney refuses to answer this even though Obama has had to answer it often.

The same thing can be said with the followers of virtually any denomination of Christianity today. Catholics are suing to stop the listing of birth control as preventative medicine. Baptists continually lobby to enshrine male-female marriage as the gold standard in constitutions. Hell, Paul Ryan bastardized the Catholic view of subsidiarity to mean that the federal government has no responsibility to help the poor eat.

It seems to be working in this case.

I only really care about a candidate's religion if they want to force their beliefs on everybody else. Yes, Mormonism is clown-farking ridiculous, but Romney doesn't seem likely to let his religion control his decisions, unlike (for example) Santorum, so whatever.

I'll be voting against him because of his political affiliations, not his religious ones. :P

There is a reasonable argument saying Mormonism isn't Christianity but a 4th Abrahamic religion.

I'd be more inclined to vote for someone who thinks is underwear will magically protect him than someone who thinks some ethereal entity will. We know underwear exists, we have no proof of angels or gods.

Interesting.

A "cult" doesn't have anything to do with what the religion believes in, it has to do with the tactics being used. Any religion can be a cult or not. Being a cult just depends how the church operates.

Is there some Mormon cults? YEP!

Does that mean all of them are? Nope.

You think that matters? Islam is an Abrahamic religion and the public consensus from Christians seems to be that Muslims are Godless heathens who want to destroy reality itself.

Mormons are Christians as much as Christians are Jews. They might have roots in the other, but calling one the other is a bit of a spin.

Nah, I think he religion-drops whenever he can. 'When I was on my mission...', 'When I was a bishop...', etc...

Now, as to your angle, he is talking about it, but not actually SAYING anything, if you get my drift... It's like hearing someone, but not listening. Like I said though, I'm not afraid of a Mormon being President, but I sure as shiat don't want THAT particular Mormon to be President.
