Ringshadow: phoolishone: Wow. Last report I saw (admittedly several years ago) implied one could basically walk in with minimal challenge. Glad to hear that's not true, thank you.

Not sure when that could have been. I remember going with my mom to pick up my dad from work when I was maybe eight, and all we could do was wait at the front desk of the security building. I mean they have added a layer of fencing since then (the outer turnstiles), but still.

Not to be a total douchebag about it, but I'm not sure a security desk is evidence of hardening against terrorist attacks. Here is a list of ongoing concerns from one government watchdog group: http://www.pogo.org/investigations/nuclear-security/nuclear-power.html , if you feel like looking there. I've read articles in the mainstream press, too (like NYTimes), but my google is failing at the moment.

Just saying, I'm not a total crank here. I do get what you're saying, though, and I'll shut up now.

Philbb: jso2897: buttery_shame_cave: no detonator huh?

did they forget to grab the second box at the bomb shop? you really gotta watch out for those multi-part packs.

Well, the f**kers have slightly different model numbers. And the manual doesn't tell you that.

What did they expect when they bought their explosives from IKEA.

They should at least have gotten one of those little useless hex wrenches.

phoolishone: Meanwhile, how is the security at US nuclear plants? Still pretty much non-existant?

/we'll be bork-bork-borked

As a contractor, here is my order of operations to get inside a plant.
Get background checked and drug tested. again.
Go through any training that's expired (it's a yearly thing)
Go through any new training required
Assuming all of the above, receive badge

Once I have the badge, here's the usual security setup.
Outer turnstiles, which is a badge reader and hand reader
Security itself, where all your stuff goes through an xray machine and you go through a bomb detector and metal detector
Inner turnstiles

The plants are usually surrounded by layered fencing, razor wire, and armored guard positions.

/all of the above doesn't even get you anywhere radioactive
//yet

A. Nothing happened. They found the explosives.
B. The issue is not how the explosives got into the plant, it's how they got onto the truck.
C. Making sure the dynamite locker at your blast site is secure before you leave would ensure that the explosives didn't get onto the truck in the first place.

halB: This was either a very odd dry run to test security, or it is a non-issue. We know the news doesn't know crap about what it reports, so for all we know this was just a pack of firecrackers that someone left in the truck after an after-work party.

It was described as a small amount of "civilian grade explosives" and found in someone's truck that had just left an industrial site. The driver didn't know they were in the truck.

So EITHER someone was attempting to sneak some explosives into the nuclear facility, perhaps with the intent of passing them on to someone inside, OR someone was attempting to sneak some explosives home via the truck with the intent of retrieving them once the truck was back off property.

In either case, the issue is not the security of Sweden's nuclear plant but the security of non-military explosives.

Headline: Nuclear Plant Scare
Explosive found (it's not plural, guys, when it's just one): A tennis ball sized construction explosive that needs a detonator
Detonator found: None

Result: Everyone wets their pants

Terrorism is so trivially easy these days.
