My wife was born in Japan and Japanese is her first language. Chinese and Japanese share some (most?) of the same characters, so she can know what many Chinese character tattoos mean too.

Number of times I've asked her what a kanji tattoo means - lots.
Number of times that it made sense or otherwise meant what the person was intending it to mean - 0

At first I was digging the article. Seemed informative and well written.....until he got to the part about Kat Von D being worth $400 bucks on hour. Kat Von D is the Danica Patrick of the tattoo world, she's not a bad overall artist, at least her portraits and black and grey stuff are pretty good, but her tattoos are not the reason she's famous. It's all about look and photo shoots for her and for the Miami Ink guys for that matter. I've been to tattoo conventions where those guys show up and spend time selling autographs and t-shirts instead of tattooing.

The second point I disagree with is that flat rate tattoos are bad. This is pretty much the standard for small tattoos. It assures the artist covers their set up fee which is usually $50 bucks minimum. If your tattoo is going to take less than an hour you're going to get a flat rate. It doesn't mean they're trying to rip you off. It means if the artist charges $100 bucks an hour and your tattoo is going to take 15 minutes, it's not worth their time or effort to try and divide that up. He probably gets this impression since he has large tattoos where you pay by the hour which means you usually come out better.

My god he recommends neosporin? There are tons of aftercare products that are made specifically for tattoos. Use tattoo goo or even better get the tattoo foam.

/it's good to see people concerned about getting a tattoo the right way. I've got lots of experience and I have my own process to getting and healing my tattoos

I have a tattoo-related question for Farkers who are knowledgeable about these things: How effective are the non-laser tattoo removal products I've heard of like Wrecking Balm, and can they be used in combination with laser tattoo removal to reduce the number of expensive laser treatments you would need?

I was in the elevator with a guy who had Chinese tattoo'd on his forearm. I thought I recognized the character for beef "yo"...nudged my Chinese friend, who can read Chinese, to confirm. She smiled, and when the guy got out of the elevator she said "Yeah, it says Beef Chow Ho Fan". So, "Beef with fat rice noodles".

That guy was either a total dumbass, or a hipster totally committed to irony. Maybe both.

I was wondering the same thing. The head tattoos are easy enough to hide with hair (as long as he doesn't go bald), but the ones on the hands and elsewhere...sheesh...that's a LOT of laser removal

acaciaavenue: Step 2: Tell him your idea, let him draw it up.

That's harder than you think! I live in a city (philly) and I had to go to 6 different places before I found an actual artist. I had an idea and every place I went to had no idea what to do. One guy told me to back a week later, and then showed me a blown up xerox of a reference photo. I then drew something out in illustrator and how it would fit on my body, and some other guy said he couldn't work with that. He needed more info, and told me to look in the book for something similar. I eventually found an awesome, actual artist out towards the suburbs. But it's really pathetic that even in a city, no tattoo artist can do anything besides trace the crap on the wall (and most customers are ok with that).

i had pretty much the same feelings about it as you did....

kat von D...TERRIBLE and her $400 an hr rate is ALL hype. if you had an entire day free i could name off THOUSANDS of artists in the 100-200 an hr range who would make her look embarrassingly bad. same goes for assgrabbers like ami james or chris nunez. the 'big name' artists he mentions in the article actually get their notoriety from tattoo magazines and travelling conventions. these guys usually run in the $150-200 an hr range

also, NEVER listen to aftercare instructions UNLESS they're given to you BY YOUR ARTIST. they should have a system already configured, figured out and tested over and over again. they know what works and why you should use what and what you should avoid.
personally i think neosporin is shiat for healing tattoos because you are statistically more likely to have an allergic reaction to it than say A&D ointment.

but i'm going to disagree with you about hourly vs flat rate. basically, that flat rate guy, is estimating how long that tattoo is going to take to do. nevermind the hundred little variables he has no control over that may need more time or attention. if he says 200 bucks, he's thinking its going to take 2 hrs to do. now what happens if you happen to have tough leathery skin, and now you're 3 1/2 hrs in and your tattoo isn't finished yet. oh snap, tattoo dude screwed up. guess what now? he's gonna rush, cut corners and do whatever to get you outta the chair and cut his losses. guess who loses? YOU.

hourly places have shop minimums. mine goes a little like, $50 min for all tattoos that are 30 mins or less. 30-45 mins but less than an hour...60/80 bucks. hourly at 100

I don't really understand the hate for flash. Just because someone else had the idea doesn't make it any less important, or meaningful, or attractive. Is your favorite song/book/movie/etc less meaningful to you because someone else had the idea first?
Yeah, I have some custom work and some flash, some bad tattoos and some good ones, but each of them is a visceraI reminder of where I was (and who I was) at the time. I picked out a Tattoo Peter design off the wall a few weeks ago precisely because it was an historical Tattoo Peter design and I was in his shop getting tattooed by Bill Loika. It's a great tattoo and an awesome souvenir of an unforgettable week in Amsterdam.
