I have such a problem with this. You are opening up a business with the goal of getting your clients to lose weight and get in shape and demonize those people who are in shape and/or have lost weight. As others have said, what do you do with successful clients? Say, "Oh hey John, you've done fantastic over the past 6 months and have lost 30 lbs. We have to cancel your membership."

Tat'dGreaser: Just go to Planet Fitness, I remember there being a very diverse crowd there regarding physical fitness level. The meat heads never bothered anyone, the incredible skinny women ignored everyone and the people trying to slim down came with friends.

You mean Planet Fatness. They don't allow meatheads there. Never been, but I hear they don't take kindly to deadlifts, which is my favorite lift. I don't grunt excessively when I lift, but if you don't make noise when you do deadlifts, you're doing it wrong.

I found Gold's to be a good alternative but a bit overpriced for what you get. They opened Xsport here which is a fantastic gym and pretty much has people of all levels but I got my own equipment now so I've got my ideal basement cave gym going.

I would go to that gym.

The one I went to had some pretty jacked guys. They just kept to themselves, kept quiet and that was it. Of course it probably helps if your buddy works there.

In all the gyms I've been to I can't remember ever thinking that someone was too fat to workout there. In fact, the fatter you are the more impressed I am that you're even at a gym. It seems our societal rules about annoyance with fatties flips as soon as you enter a gym. I think that most skinny/healthy people feel this way but the fatties don't get the message. They still think they're being judged the same as if they were stuffing their faces on Red Robin's delicious bottomless fry basket.

2012-06-21 01:52:08 PM

Tat'dGreaser: These days you really don't need a gym anyway. There are so many at home fitness programs that it's not really needed unless you want to lift some serious weights.

Or watch the really cute girls asses bounce on the treadmill while you lift said weights...

///Dont judge me LOL

This is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. So - since the scads of fat-arses can't handle putting the farking fork down, they're just going to ostracize the people who can handle it and want to remain healthy and make THEM the freaks?

/what do you get when you guzzle down sweets-eating as much as an elephant eats?
YOU GET FAT.

she considers her gym is a "safe haven" for overweight clients

I've been a member of a couple gyms in my life and I don't get this "feeling safe" crap that some gyms are pushing lately. I think Planet Fitness is the silliest by a long shot, but this is pretty bad too.

Newsflash: nobody but you really cares about your lardass unless it's spilling into someone else's seat. They're not judging you. They're probably not even aware you're there unless you drew attention to yourself somehow.

If you're that worried about going out in public because of your fat butt you probably need a shrink worse than you need a "safe" gym.

You have a blissfully naive outlook on people.

Meh, I only have a membership so I can swim. Try a running/walking clinic or buying a bike and get outside. I don't understand how people can spend a beautiful summer evening inside on a treadmill or stationary bike.

I worked out at a Planet Fitness for a couple of years (I was broke and it was $7 a month) and got yelled at a couple of times for dropping weights (Sorry Mr. Gym Attendant, I'll put down those 110lb dumbbells a little more quietly), but for the most part had a good experience. I would even do CrossFit WODs with the 35lb bars they had.

As far as really big people in the gym, I find it inspirational. If I see someone that is really overweight working out it makes me think they have courage and determination. Fitness is not easy, especially for those with body images and/or weight problems. They deserve respect, not coddling or denigration.

That's because most American men are already circumcised.

I'm totally cool with this. Maybe if all the fatties are congregating at one gym, there will be more open benches/weights at my gym. I hate fat-asses at the gym. They're slow, sweaty, and take up a lot of room, all while jacking up the pathetic-ness of the whole place.

Also, I foresee this place going out of business. Most fat people lack discipline and will stop going to the gym within a short time of initiating their workout plan.

Yeah yeah, I'm a jerk. But I'm a fit, attractive, in-shape jerk

2012-06-21 01:57:58 PM
Where the hell does this stereotype come from that avid gym goers some to put down those that aren't fit. In my years of experience, 99% of them fall into the two categories 1) they just quietly do their workout and leave 2) they are very nice and like to help others and share their knowledge.

It sounds to me like unmotivated people just want an excuse for being overweight and this gym is going to cater to that. But then what will they say years later when they still ahven't had any luck at this gym? Who will they blame then?

Same way I've always felt. I respect everyone in the gym because no matter what kind of shape you're in, at least you're doing something about it. That is half the battle right there. I think most people in most gyms mind their own business unless you're on a piece of equipment they want to use or doing something horribly wrong/dangerous.

rikkitikkitavi: psunbird92: At the gym I frequent, fatties are not usually the problem. The people who walk around like they've never seen a gym before are worse. Also, the dude-bros who compare their man tans, Affliction shirts and level of tightness, cliched tats, who usually sit on the bench press for 2 hours are the worse. Also saw a guy Tebow it up. Can't make that up. Speaking of which, gotta be there in 26mins.

Well no, not the same, but when I was busting my ass dropping 95 pounds by running around the block and hitting the gym, I was quite put off by the condescending "oh look at you, fat girl, good for you!" crap. I'm not a puppy or a child; I don't need praise, especially from strangers who are making quite a few assumptions about me. I know people who say those things think they are helping, but they are not. I just want to work out in peace. Talk to me like a normal human being.

...and most of that is sweat.

Seriously though... If overweight folks feel more comfortable in a gym environment like this then I say more power to them.

I've been going to Planet Fitness for the last year or so and there's all manner of sizes and shapes there. Strikes me as a fairly welcoming place regardless of your physical fitness level. ...That's pretty much been my experience in a number of gyms with the exception of the local W.O.W., which was populated with 'roided up meat heads, for some reason. The place was disgusting, too.

the gym for fat people should start with the the last space in a parking lot, a stairs only policy, and a five floor walk up apartment.

also reminds me:

Fred Domino: All right, who ordered 60 double Buster burgers?

Magneto Jones: That fat motherfarker right there. That fat motherfarker right there. Them two giggling twin motherfarkers right there. And that skinny walnut headed right there ordered 72

Strange, I get more inspiration from the larger folks busting their butt in the gym to lose weight and get healthy than I do from the 'in shape' folks.. I routinely see an older larger guy, with two prosthetic legs, working out and walking on the treadmill at our gym and I think, 'dude, if that guy can get off his arse and exercise everyday, there's no reason I can't'

This is a great business model, as you can oversell the gym, knowing that your clientele will barely come in more than once a week. It's the skinny gym-rats, who come in frequently, that would crowd the gym and put wear and tear on the machines.
