Too early, and too reprehensible for me to craft the words equal to this crime.

I just love my state.

they're not even trying to hide it anymore.

They're for PERSONAL responsibility only. These were the actions of the state. Besides, slavery.

But don't say the word "vagina".

At this point, if you are still a Republican, you're an asshole. No, not all Republicans are bad people, but when they continue to be represented by these people who are assholes and don't leave the party, you're an asshole by association.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Why does NC hate America so much?

if you start compensating people who have been 'victimized' by past history,

I love how they put 'victimized' in quotes.

These people were forcibly sterilized by the government without their consent.

It doesn't say they have to heed the petition. ;-)

Now who's up for some genital mutiliation?!

Not all Conservatives are bad people. Republicans, on the other hand, certainly are.

Right now, the GOP is hardly Conservative. If they were, I'd still be registered Republican, but the radical turn the party has taken has soured me.

Legislators also feared paying the victims would lead other groups, such as descendants of slaves, to seek reparations.

Aaaaand there's the nugget.

NC Republicans should do every single thing Bev Perdue wants them to do, then parade it all out at Bank of America Stadium, come convention time.

Why aren't potholes getting fixed? Ask Ms. Perdue. We had to pay millions to people the state sterilized years ago.

2012-06-21 11:31:07 AM
There is no word that can describe how much I hate these people. Honestly the least they can do is pay them for not being able to ever have any children. The most they could do is castrate with a rusty cleaver anyone still alive who was involved.

Well here's a solution, only compensate the people who were actually wronged. Not their kids.

What was the social norm 80 years ago or 200 years ago and what they were doing 35 years ago are different. The program ran until 1976, decades after everyone else understood science and/or had stopped the program.

If YOU were old enough to be forcibly sterilized YOU get paid for it.

/It's not like you will have to pay their children...

How about people who suffered under Jim Crow laws or suffered hiring discrimination in the past?

While I agree that the budgets are stretched, maybe the best way for the Gov't to not have to pay out would be to stop wronging so many damn people in the first place!

soaboutthat: The program ran until 1976, decades after everyone else understood science and/or had stopped the program.

It was also 34 years after the Supreme Court unanimously held that punitive sterilization was unconstitutional in Skinner v. Oklahoma. Of course, North Carolina would argue that this wasn't punitive. They did it for funsies.

Said the man who should be forcibly sterilized and then have this quote used against him in court.

Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with you there. If you can look at any part of the Republican platform these days and think "Yeah, these people are on the same page as me." Then you're an asshole. There's no way around it.

The leader of the Republicans in the Senate tried to get his crowd to approve that part of the bill, but failed. Apparently too many of them are closet racists that don't see anything wrong with sterilizing minorities; hell, they probably wish more of them had been sterilized.

What's interesting is the Republican-controlled House overwhelmingtly supported paying the few survivors of this shameful incident $50,000 each. The Senate Republicans preferred that money go somewhere else.

But it's so much easier to argue against this strawman made out of - OK, yes - the clothes of people who'd been forcibly sterilized, but stuffed with reparations for the descendants of slaves, victims of prosecutorial or police misconduct, scary minorities gaming the system, descendants of Union soldiers killed by NC Confederate troops, UN Order 21 and Shariah.

We don't want people to think the state has money to pay for their own malfeasance, people might start to expect remuneration when we fark up!

Uh, how about it end when we've finished paying off our moral debt to those who've been wronged? So terribly sorry we can't finish giving goodies to your corporate buddies until that's all done, but hey, if you didn't want to pay a bunch of money to people you shouldn't have forcibly sterilized innocent people.

Exactly. That's why we should stop returning things stolen during WW2 to the victim's families.

Really, I can set my watch to this shiat. It ALWAYS comes back to something black people related. Always.

2012-06-21 11:44:50 AM
They should really think about giving out that 40 acres and a mule while housing prices are rock bottom. I'm sure their buddies at Bank of America would love to write off all those foreclosed properties and get tax dollars for it.

2012-06-21 11:45:28 AM
"You just can't rewrite history. It was a sorry time in this country," East said. "I'm so sorry it happened, but throwing money don't change it, don't make it go away. It still happened."

So what you're saying is the government should be able to commit crimes against its citizens and, if they manage to skirt responsibility for a few years, we have to let it go because that shiat all happened in the past.

Absolutely indefensible.

So, $50,000 is what a person's reproductive rights cost these days. Interesting.

Allran, the Republican senator, said the timing was not right.

Isn't that about how much Sandra Fluke's birth control was gonna cost Georgetown during her post grad?

Legislators also feared paying the victims would lead other groups, such as descendants of slaves, to seek reparations.
A group set up to help North Carolina victims estimated up to 1,800 were still living, though it had only verified 146 people.

The victims in this case are the actual living victims, not their great-grandchildren. Also, unless I'm mistaken, the state of NC didn't personally own slaves, but did personally sterilize these women against their will. Sure these are minor differences, but they are more than enough to make the legislators and the entire state look like a bunch of willful retards.

No, I think the subtext is:
We aren't giving raises out to public employees and they'll be the first to whine if we payout this money first.
