I dunno, while cornbread is certainly regional in origin, and people definitely think of it as "southern" food, I think it's got pretty wide appeal.

I would kill for a rootbeer!

I was gutted when McDonalds stopped doing it (about 20 years ago) even though it was just syrup/carbonated water mix. As a supervisor at a KFC/A&W about ten years ago, I was in heaven. Unfortunately the A&W side of things failed but I have since discovered a shop where you can get it in cans but, at £1.60 each, its not something I plan on buying every day.

Cornbread is pretty mainstream though. Goes great with chili.

I'm surprised that peanut butter and refried beans didn't make the list. I haven't met a European yet that liked peanut butter, and the appearance alone of refried beans grossed them out.

A lot of the foods on this list are regional, like grits and cornbread. From my experience, cornbread made in the Southern US tends to be saltier and crumblier (because you're going to crumble it up in your beans, milk or chili), while Northern US cornbread tends to be sweeter and more cake-like.

All the German people I work with absolutely hate root beer.

Being in Louisiana, there are a lot of foods here that the rest of the country doesn't understand or like.

Crawfish being the obvious choice.

I love grits. Specially with bacon and butter. Yum.
Cornbread is just fantastic.
Root beer is my number one choice for a soda.
Fried Green Tomatoes are yummy!

Never had Scrapple. Kind of sounds like a meat product out the can sort of deal.

I remember in High School seeing a German exchange student getting excited about seeing a can of "root beer" available in the hotel room fridge. Obviously he thought it was just "beer". He takes one big swig and then goes straight to the bathroom to vomit.

I like cornbread as a coating e.g. on corn dogs, but not as a big crumbly hunk.

Also, I rejoice that food/pop is still allowed to be luminous acid orange coloured in the US -
- reminds me of childhood before the EU decided food colours = strychnine.

EU mac & cheese is a straw-coioured travesty.
