Well, this will either be ignored by pedophiles, or they will make fake accounts (shocking, I know!), or just go troll for victims on some other online service. This law seems to have the best intentions, but is a waste of time and tax money.

This. The only thing this will do is give them another charge to tack on if they want to rearrest him. The only ones they'll catch are the ones using their real names, which are likely not the ones trying to use social networking to find victims. Why do I suspect we'll just see people with similar names, living anywhere remotely close to where an actual offender lives, being arrested?

FTA: "I challenge you today to walk down the street to see how many people and children are checking Pinterest, Instagram and other social networking sites. If you look at how common it is, that's 24 hour a day, seven days a week for somebody to interact with your children and your grandchildren."

...or you could try parenting your own children instead of passing a law which is practically impossible to enforce.

Listing their status in their profile, I can see. Facebook will just delete the account anyway. But putting their physical address in there? I got a better idea: NEVER LET THEM OUT OF JAIL.

There is a small issue with this idea. There are some people who are on the sex offender list that were put there for dating a 16 or 17 year old when they were 18. Basically high schoolers normal lives are interrupted.

This usually happens cause the parents of the younger kid does not like the other and when they know said kid is 18, calls the cops and he is arrested.

Number of 'registered sex offenders' in the US: over 750,000. Percentage of these that are actually pedophiles? Who knows? Is it more than 3%?

The list is bloated by the inclusion of prostitutes/johns, streakers, public urination, etc. Not to mention the 18 year-olds with 17 year-old girlfriends.

Sites like http://www.familywatchdog.us let you look up the local registrants, but it becomes noise when there are hundreds within your location, the vast majority of which seem to be nonviolent (and non-pedophile) "offenders".

At some point this witch hunt must end.

There are about two thousand people in the U.S. that share my name. The odds are damn good that my name is in the registries and given that my SSN, address, or anything else a computer could use to determine that I am not one of these people is not on my FB, I don't know how such an app could "work" without falsely making me and nearly 2 thousand innocent persons into "offenders"

I'm always wary when the law mandates that one must patronize a private for-profit business. For instance, I oppose the fact that the state requires me to buy auto insurance from a private firm. Now, I recognize that being a felon probably involves a lot of things one doesn't particularly find appealing, but I don't think it's right to force people under color of law to support Facebook.

/What about mySpace, for instance?

The problem with the "sex offender" label is that there are too many offenses that lead to it. At one time, the term "sex offender" was pretty much limited to people who committed serious offenses. But over the years, it's been diluted by various lawmakers eager to show constituents that they're uber-tough on crime. These days, urinating in public is enough to gain "sex offender" status. And remember, with "sex offender" status comes restrictions on where you can live and where you can work.

When you see someone labeled "sex offender" with no further information, you don't know whether that person is a kiddie diddler, a convicted rapist or simply someone who urinated off a balcony at a frat party 5 years ago.

I'm guessing some contractor has already sent in the invoice for "custom" software to track the sex offenders. Although doesn't it catch anyone as strange that a public office is forcing sex offenders to use a social media site run by the private sector?

So I'm curious: how many know which of their facebook friends is a dope dealer? Burglar? Home invader? Spouse abuser? Repeat batterer? I find it intetesting that a special set of social restrictions is set up for what is statistically a small percentage of the criminal population, while the larger portion is... tolerated?

I mean, I guess it doesn't matter your daughter dates a spouse abuser. Black eyes heal, right? And she should be able to see the signs beforehand, right? If not, then I guess she better learn to watch her mouth.

Right?

People hate them so much, ostracize them from society completely, place legal traps and restrictions to jail them on a whim. They never recover a life, even then ones that don't relapse.

Time to bring back the criminal colony? We've all but banished them anyway. Ship them to an island with no contact and scant resources.

Why do we have a sex offenders list (which they stay on after serving their time), but we do not have a 'thief list' or a 'murder list' or a 'violent bastard list' or 'corporate criminal list'?

Personally (thankfully) I have never suffered from a sex offender, but I have suffered theft and violence, and my uncle was murdered.

It constantly amazes me how sex is somehow worse than violence - seems topsy turvy to me.

The validity behind zero tolerance is that politically connected folks, and judge's sons are no longer exempt from going to jail (on the rare chance they should happen to be charged and convicted).
