Because if there's one thing troubled middle school children respect it's adults who try to "be the alpha" and assert authority by "engaging them in a positive dialogue."

You would've been eaten alive at my school.

I love how all the lefties immediately go to "these are troubled kids with horrible home lives!" when there is absolutely no evidence of that.

Maybe they act out because they have 2 mommies or 2 daddies at home and it confuses them.

There was a man who decided not to take care of himself because he was lazy and adverse to discomfort. He progressed from chunky to overweight to obese. His doctor recommended he lose some weight or he'd face dire consequences down the road. The man quit going to the doctor. Due to his poor health, he developed pancreatic cancer.

Though his wife had long since lost any attraction to him, she agreed to go to his favorite restaurant, a local fast food place called The Grease Trap. The man had rewritten his personal history so as to believe that he had met his wife there, when in fact they'd met at a personal growth conference designed to bring the power back into recent divorcees lives. She had moved into his house two weeks after they'd met. She was now a psychic who gave massages out of the spare room. He was too overweight to work, though he blamed the economy and focused his meager energy into pyramid schemes and get rich quick braggadocio.

Because he took no personal care of himself, his pancreatic cancer quickly worsened and spread to his lymph nodes. The VA doctors recommended chemo-therapy, but because it would cause him to lose his hair, he ignored them and went about curing himself by eating grapefruits thrown out by the farmer's market up the road from his house. It might have worked had he not continued to consume 8000-10000 calories a day in junk food which he bought because he told himself he couldn't afford anything better.

Inexplicably, he asked his wife to share his probable last meal with him at the Grease Trap. She was ready to get rid of him, so anything that might hasten the process appealed to her deeply. He ordered his usual tray of low grade beef on high fructose buns piled high with soggy french fries. She could barely watch him eat - grease dripping down his sagging chin. Instead, she made eyes at a group of high school football players sitting in the adjacent booth. Cajoled by her flirtations, the young jocks began making fun of the fat man. They threw food at him and even flicked wads of phlegm onto his hamburger, which he ate anyway.

Too fat and pathetic to defend himself, the man waddled out of the restaurant, leaning on his cane, breathing heavily, barely fifty years old. He tried to drive them home but his gut was too rotund for the steering wheel to turn, so as usual, his wife had to take over for him. He cried as they pulled into the driveway, probably for the last time, while his wife struggled to stifle a chuckle at his life of self centered fallacy.

He died that night, not of cancer, but sleep apnea. Broke, he was buried by the state in a mass, unmarked grave with other fat people who failed miserably at living.

Hammonton, New Jersey. Not a terrible town, but loose hair, gold chains, and farking LOUD TALKING everywhere.

This thread needs more Italian jokes:

At the World Women's Conference, the first speaker from England stood up:
"At last year's conference we spoke about being more assertive with our husbands. Well after the conference I went home and told my husband that I would no longer cook for him and that he would have to do it himself. After the first day I saw nothing. After the second day I saw nothing. But after the third day I saw that he had cooked a wonderful roast lamb."

The crowd cheered.
The second speaker from America stood up:
"After last year's conference I went home and told my husband that I would no longer do his laundry and that he would have to do it himself. After the first day I saw nothing. After the second day I saw nothing. But after the third day I saw that he had done not only his own washing but my washing as well."

The crowd cheered.

The third speaker from Italy stood up:
"After last year's conference I went home and told my husband that I would no longer do his shopping and that he would have to do it himself. After the first day I saw nothing. After the second day I saw nothing. But after the third day I could see a little bit out of my left eye."

Just to be clear, that is $10 an hour for maybe 4 hours a day with no benefits and no pay during the summer, the winter break, the spring break, yada, yada. That lady is probably lucky if she make $16,000 a year! (Mom's friend was a bus monitor, she cleared $15,000 last year and put up with an unbelievable amount of crap)

That is starting salary in a government union job. Mandatory raise every 6 month, plus annual raises. She is a 23 year bus system employee. She's easily clearing $50,000-$60,000 a year for working 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, 8 months a year.

The Great EZE: I don't see a 20-minute bus ride to and from school and the occasional field trip as being an environment requiring a father figure with teacher-like authority. The average bus ride goes entirely without incident. Frankly, "bus monitor" seems like a position tailor-made for little old ladies who want to help kids and just need a quick part-time job to break the monotony of life. Take that away from them and there's really not much left.

I'm not sure what planet you live on if you think it is a 20 minute bus ride. Maybe for the first kid to get dropped off.

Jobs are not created to meet the random desires of people. Jobs are created when there is a problem that needs solving. If the person who fills that job is incompetent, then they should be fired.

Most she can do is ask them to stop, and maybe write down names and turn them into the school e next day. More often than not, what she would report will go ignored or the kids will at most be told not to ride the bus for a day or so.

There really isn't much she could do in those situations to have made it any better.

Utterly false.

Bus monitors/aids are paid government employees who have the sole purpose of maintaining order on the bus. Things they are directly not allowed to do:

1.) Not report incidents
2.) Hide in their seat while kids run wild over the bus
3.) Tell the kids about how their own kids killed themselves.

His cancer had returned, and he was about to start chemo again. His odds of survival were less than spectacular.

Dinner started well, with he and his wife reminiscing about the time they first met. Then, some high school kids sat in a table next to them. They started talking loudly about "that giant fatass." The taunting became more direct and pointed, as they mocked him openly in front of his wife. He politely asked the kids to leave he and his wife in peace, which prompted them to start throwing french fries at him. They aren't administrators and they can't discipline the kids. She could of likely threatened to report them to the school (which she may have done off-tape, since it started mid-bullying), but past that, what are you expecting her to do? Force them to stay on the bus and go back to school? Slap them on the mouth? She can't do shiat and the kids very well knew that, which is part of the reason they were so relentless.

And even if you weren't a massive farking idiot and you had a point, how exactly does that validate this situation in the least?

"Well the kids were definitely being harsh but she really should of sucked it up when they reminded her about the son she lost to suicide and showed those kids what-for."

Yes, take them back to the farking school, pull the bus over and don't move until they shut the fark up, you know, the way bus drivers handled things when I was a kid 15 years ago?

P.S. no, I'm not trolling, I'm thoroughly tired of society overreacting to stuff like this.

Feepit: The problem is that she wasn't in control of the situation. She was trying to sink into the background, making her an obvious target of children who are trying to find out who the alpha of the group is. If you are going to be a monitor on a bus full of troubled children, you need to be the alpha. Be the first to introduce yourself to them, engage them in a positive dialogue, and keep the conversation interesting so the time passes quickly.

Because if there's one thing troubled middle school children respect it's adults who try to "be the alpha" and assert authority by "engaging them in a positive dialogue."

You would've been eaten alive at my school.

How much elder abuse do you think is acceptable?

Where did I indiciate that it was acceptable?

You say that she should be able to handle it, so it's pretty clear you have some idea in mind of what an acceptable level of abuse is. I'm just trying to figure out what crosses the line in to things she shouldn't be able to handle.

Yeah handle it, not sit there and take it. If kids start acting up she should be able to "hanlde it" and stop the situation from escalating where it gets to the point where she cries.

The Great EZE: I don't know if she reported them or not (didn't catch that detail in any of the stories I read) but seriously, what is "reporting" them going to do? It's been a while since I was in school but I remember being reported as one of the things bad kids were least afraid of. Ooooooh, paperwork. I never understood that as some sort of intimidating punishment. Like trying to kill a cockroach by spraying it with Fabreze

StrangeQ: And what authority, exactly, would you like her to have? School officials can hardly even touch a kid to drag them to the principal's office without being sued, which leaves them with calling the police as their only other option, and the parents squawk about that too

What is the point of the monitor if they have no authority?

As far as schools having no authority except calling the police, and reporting being meaningless, if that is the case then they would be doing this in class to teachers as well. Now she may have had no authrotiy, but then once again she shouldn;t have been there (but that wouldn't be her fault).

I know in some school systems they will kick you off the bus for a time. I know from experience and my parents were far more mad about that then any suspension I ever got.

LOL. I think people are forgetting just how little authority unrelated adults have even over kids they're supposed to be monitoring. What is she supposed to do? Hit them? That's a firing and jail time. Yell at them? That just makes things worse. Kick them off the bus? That'll cause parental outrage, cowardice from the school, suspension at least, but probably no jail time. Kids aren't stupid. They know how much power school administrations/the law/their parents give them and they aim to use every ounce of it.

Please, victim blamers, offer up some solutions.

/Bouncers get to work with other adults. World of difference.

I'll readily admit that the world is different in that regard than when I was a kid, but she still has some kind of authority. Mostly, private schools these days do things to piss off the parents so they'll get pissed at the kids. Public schools from what I'm seeing seem to still hand out detentions and suspensions, but just can't seem to hold people back as much as they used to.

So:
No recess
Private study halls at the principles desk while he lectures you
Detentions
Interference with their athletics (you're suspended from team sports for a month)

The schools have no power over the kids these days, but they have power over the facilities, and the kids' access thereof. Take privileges away. That's what they always told me was happening when the entire class would be threatened with losing prom or some such over small potatoes incidents.

/this story is a personal tragedy for this woman, but like I said... I'm *certain* there are in-school consequences for this kind of behavior.

The money is ridiculous. I was severely bullied(taunted, threatened, told I was worthless, ugly) in junior high from ages 11-14, for the three years I was there. Yeah. Three years, not 10 minutes. I dreaded going to school not knowing what would happen. I could have possibly lawyered up as an adult and got some money, but I didn't. I had rocks thrown at me. I was chased. I had kids say they'd blow up my house and burn a cross on my lawn(I'm not black, my mother is quite religious)

Boo hoo. We were ALL bullied in middle school.

This woman's getting money because she's not a middle school student. We all paid our dues. Shouldn't have to pay them twice. If I had been on that bus, the video would have gone viral, but it would be "Crazy fat man swears well at kids" no "Little bastards make poor old lady cry"

Back even twenty years ago, these kids would have belted across the mouth by the bus driver.

I haven't watched it yet either, but judging from the reaction (not just here but from other outlets), it was pretty cruel. And it's not a "wrong line of work" thing, it's a "kids are heartless bastards who should be gagged and caged" thing. I challenge any ITG to put up with that for a prolong amount of time.

And remember: this isn't the internet. There's no time to google the best comeback or just write it off as asshole anonymity. It's not even video game culture where you can just hide behind your headset and TV. Have fun.

Kids on my buses in elementary, middle, and high school got "written up" routinely for that sort of shiat. Detentions were handed out like candy. Too many incidents and you could get suspended.

This was public school.

I'm not sure I understand how power-dynamics could have shifted so much in 10-20 years.
