Doing a GIS for 'workplace bully' offers a lot of potential 'welcome to fark' images. Just thought I'd share that.

If someone bullied me at work, I would beat the ever loving shiat out of them. Internet Tough Guys like me don't take sh*t from anyone.

What you wanna start something? Huh? You think I can't find out where you live? You think I can't track your IP? I've got a .50 cal in the back of my truck that says differently.

some of the developers here used to bully me by quietly keeping to themselves and ignoring me. but i didn't sit back and just let them get away with it. i've started regularly beating the sh*t out of them and taking their lunches. that'll teach those bullies.

I remember getting my first "real" job after college, and thinking how nice it was going to be to work with actual adults. No more catty bullshiat. No more workplace cliques. No more backstabbing crap.

Boy did I have an unpleasant awakening.

You kill 10 people, you go to Texas, they hit you with a brick, that's what they do.
Twenty people, you go to a hospital, they look through a small window at you forever.
And over that, we can't deal with it, you know? Someone's killed 100,000 people. We're almost going, "Well done! You killed 100,000 people? Ahhh. You must get up very early in the morning. I can't even get down the gym!""

We had a woman who was catty, gossipy, yet unnervingly upbeat working with us for a while. Everyone LOVED her and no one seemed to understand why our normal family-like company (very small, owner operated) was getting more and more tiresome, biatchy, and snappy with each other...

She moved back home across the country a few months back and intra-personal office relationships have never been better between everyone.

/I still doubt they realize the reason why...

Unless the bully tells HR that they have a condition and are taking meds for it. If they get fired the ACLU gets a call.
Just slash their tires. You'll feel better.

This is why women will never run the world. They'll get to a certain point, and then start to sabotage each other.

Sounds like you need to grow a pair.

1. Confront a-hole.
2. Confront HR.
3. Confront lawyer.

I'm pro-union. But the workplace bully at my job is the union rep, the lead hand, the health & safety rep, 3rd vice prez of the union, etc.
She's a big, fat, retarded sociopath that has managed to insulate herself to an amazing degree. Oh: she also handles my payroll, lieu time, and vacation scheduling! And hogs 100% of the overtime (goes by seniority). I took the shiatty afternoon shift to get away from her.
/alcohol helps.

If you listen to the ground you can hear the stampede of personal injury attorneys running to make the new wave of late night commercials; "Have you been bullied at work? Call me, I will get you the settlement you deserve!"

Agree with the bolded, to an extent. My company actually has more women than men, our COO being one of them; who by the way runs our office amazingly. I am constantly in awe of her... everyone (yes, even all the women) get along great and always had. The ONLY time that things were strained is when the above bolded type of woman was introduced into the mix. Once she left, things level out again. I think it was really just another lesson in peer-pressure the drive to conform.

I never did like her. And I certainly never told her anything regarding my personal life, to which she asked me about constantly.

Because I'm a wise-crackin' fool who don't take no lip from no one, here's some advice for you Fark-folk, based on personal experience:

Print out your company's harrassment policy. Read it. It's possible, even likely that your company doesn't have a harrassment policy. Most of them only have sexual harrassment policies and tell you where you can't park, but they don't address jerks. Your state likely does, though.

For the most part, the policy should generally define harrassment as someone using harsh words, tones, volumes, proximity, or physical action to make another person feel uncomfortable or intimidated.

When said bully is in the process of loud intimidating douchiness, verbally tell them that their actions constitute harrassment and hand them a copy of the policy. (You'll likely have a copy of that policy handy because you know you'll be using it.) You later communicate with human resources and have them acknowledge that there has been a verbal discussion.
Next time, straight to HR and that person's superior. Next time, local police.

/just don't be a big enough jerk that you deserved the harrassment

//My "bully" - female overachiever with a poor approach to her job. She was eventually stripped down to very little responsibility and left before she was fired. Oddly enough, she was fired from a different job just yesterday.

I was accused of bullying at my last job. I would organize pick-up basketball games every week mostly with guys from work. One guy from work who was an annoying douche wanted to play but I would never invite him because well, I thought he was an annoying douche.

This behavior was enough to label me a bully. As much as I appreciate other people trying to choose my friends for me, they can fark off.

I think we're surrounded by people who need to get out a little more. Believe it or not, there are people that still use the 1950's football coach style of management.
Incidentally, "spit on it and rub some dirt into it" is not a viable method of performing work duties.

oh no more bullies ..

Hmm, I was bullied one time when I worked at Taco Bell. Grabbed the guy and pushed him into a metal rack, we became friends after that.

One other time the GM of a car dealer I worked for wanted to find a reason to fire me because I stood up to this idiotic supervisor. So one day he found a non reason and fired me, as he was walking me out he said "you're lucky there's a law against punching punks like you"! I stopped and turned around, and the look on his face was priceless, like he thought I'd cower away. I held up my middle finger proudly, and loudly exclaimed F YOU right in his face. He had nothing to say after that, but they tried to dispute my unemployment. After I appealed and provided them with all the facts, I got my unemployment. Oh, the supervisor and GM are no longer with us, and not from old age.

The key is to always stand your ground and never cower, for bully's are nothing but cowards in the end. Just know that Karma will take over one day.

2012-06-21 01:52:56 PM
Working with one right now. This year, however, bully has taken back to back weeks off. The temp replacement has been so different that even the obtuse boss has noticed. Maybe there are some changes on the horizon.

2012-06-21 01:56:07 PM
I've worked places where the boss damn well knew about, and encouraged, bullies. Of course they always played the nice guy, and if things didn't work out right, they pretended they had no clue, and the bully would be fired, or moved somewhere else.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often -- Going Postal

Why some workplace bullies are better than others

2012-06-21 02:04:23 PM
I've actually had this happen. A few designers kept trying to have me do their work for them even though I was in the engineering department. I was friends with a girl in the office and they actually went to my boss saying I was sexually harassing her. I asked the boss to bring in the people who accused me as well as the girl. He did and I then asked her if she felt that I was threatening her in any way. She said no, that we were friends and then I asked the pricks if they had anything else they felt like pinning on me. They didn't. But it didn't stop there, I had my desk trashed, my work sabotaged, and was insulted all day. In the end I called a lawyer and walked in with him to my boss and explained that if this wasn't handled, I was prepared to file a lawsuit. The pricks were fired that day.

2012-06-21 02:08:25 PM
I am the security guy, so I deal with these kinds of threats and crap daily. I have never felt bad when some pushy douche gets canned because they don't know how to interact with others.

But, just because someone intimidates you, does not mean they are a bully.

If intimidating people was the sole definition of bully, I'd be top of the list. Rooms go silent when I walk in. No one likes me showing up at their desk. I try to be personable, but the job carries with it a certain level of fear. If I'm there, there's pretty much going to be a good reason.

I think it all ties back to the new "very kid gets a trophy generation" there will be no more winners or losers. How is that going to work in a decision where a decision has to be made, I have no friggin clue.
