That is farking delightful, lol.

That looks more like 1975 there Tampa.

I may have missed it, but who are they even playing, and will they break out their authentic 1970s uniforms?

For a team that has no retro 70s uniform, that's an awesome version of a retro 70s uniform. Most actual 70s uniforms weren't that good.

I like that better than the regular Rays uniform(s). Not sure why they couldn't have found a player to model it though, yikes.

from an era when the team didn't exist

This would be awesome if they meant "the Renaissance" or "Bronze-Age Greece."

I'm pretty sure teams have done this before with semi-pro teams that were in the cities before.

I coulda sworn even the rays did that with a St. Pete team from the 60s/70s

The Rays wore Tampa Smokers uniforms one time, but they punked out and took the cigar off the uniform. I'm surprised they even got away with the name "Smokers" and weren't forced to call the team the Tampa Healthy PIece of Lung Tissue Because Fark You Philip Morris

Weren't they still called the Devil Rays in the 70s?

This isn't that new of a thing, Seattle wore there throw back uniforms from the 1950's earlier this season against the Angels even though both teams began in the 1970's. I think they each wore uni's from Pacific Coast League teams that played in their cities.

I'd be wary of heading to the park that night. That 'a' looks like these jerseys were brought to you by Aperture Science.

What about throwback shirts once worn by teams that are now circling the pan about to be flushed down to the depths of Hell where they belong?

A lot of teams have done that and it is a nice nostalgia trip. But these are not from a team that existed in the 70s. The Rays just created ugly ass 70s uniforms.

While 70s uniforms were ugly, at least they had some colour, not just black, grey, white, and very dark blue that have dominated all sports recently, though there has been some movement back to brighter colours.

Can we really be sure Tampa didn't have a baseball team in the 70s? With that bridge on the way to the stadium, it's at least possible they had a team and nobody knew about it.

Much like today.

Well, the team was created from thin air through expansion and 1998 was the inaugural season.

If you're creating a completely fictitious history, I don't think you need a nod to actual history.

the Angels even though both teams began in the 1970's

1961, actually, but if you ask 90% of the people in the Angel Stadium stands, they would quickly point out that Major League Baseball was invented in 2002.

2012-06-21 10:22:45 AM
C'mon Rays.. you're a big boy team.. in the premiere division and everything.. you don't have to act like a minor league team.

Because, much like today, there is no pro baseball in Tampa. There is pro baseball in St. Petersburg though.

It's clearly a picture of a man (of sorts) and his dog. And his sister, girlfriend or quite likely both, two of which are dressed in the rags of Scotland's shame, now hilariously a dead club.

That is, in fact, a 1970s uniform. Though they should've made the blue more sky-ish, like the color they made Fords back then.

\and I'm aware they used dark & muted colors in the 70s, but there's something wrong with that light blue

2012-06-21 11:59:00 AM

Prices are already at 70's levels at the Trop. I usually pay less than $10 to get in, and then go sit wherever I want. Getting a ticket for $5 outside the stadium isn't uncommon.

I'll take that over a new Marlins-like stadium at triple the prices.

/go rays

The Tigers have some insanely low prices -- they have $5 tickets, a lot where you can park that's a couple blocks away for $5, and a $5 hotdog/chips/10 ounces of pop deal. It's kind of awesome.

You could say that about many products from the 70s. Somebody designed the AMC Pacer, then executives looked at the design and said "Yes! That's it exactly!" Then, they manufactured the farking thing and everyone lined up to whistle as the first monstrosity rolled off the line. Then, human customers actually paid their own money to purchase that car after inspecting all the others and deeming the Pacer to be the best one for the price.

They still have the orange D on the road. In the 90s they wore this abomination, from more than 3 feet away it's unrecognizable as to what it is.

It's the best looking hat the Major leagues have ever produced. But what do I know? I'm an Oakland A's fan. The only caps we've ever had to look down on are these:
