Clearly he went door-to-door with a special offer to smokers over the age of 21. He should have told the cops he was trying to buy back her pack and help her quit, but when he reached for his wallet his pants exploded.

Sooo.. the study finds that hoses contain stuff that's bad for you, but it doesn't say whether or not the hoses contaminate the water in toxic amounts. I mean, unless you drink gallons of water from a hose multiple times a day, is this really something to be concerned with?

I DRTFA, but isn't the cigarette question probably just the excuse to get her attention so he can flash her? It's like a mugger asking for the time.

A year after I graduated high school, an acquaintance (friend of a friend) was shot in the head and killed over a cigarette.

Michael Hayden Blackburn, 19, will spend two years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting a friend in the head over a cigarette.

Blackburn was in court Friday facing one count of involuntary manslaughter for shooting 18-year-old Joseph Francis Murphy III in the head in front of Blackburn's house in Savannah on May 31, 1996.

Judge John E. Morse Jr. sentenced Blackburn to the two years in prison for the killing and a five-year probationary period for an additional charge of possessing a firearm.

The sentence, according to Rick Pryor of the Citizens Crime Commission, a non-profit group which follows crime-related issues in Savannah, is ''fluff.''

''I'm appalled,'' Pryor said Monday. ''There's just no way we can be convinced that there was not some type of favoritism involved. Compared to cases with similar circumstances, it just seems that the way the D.A. (district attorney) presented the case was weak.''

Pryor compared the white teen-ager's sentencing to the trials of six black police officers arrested on drug charges.

''While we're not entirely sure it's true, it would definitely be appropriate in this case to ask if race was a deciding factor -- and I'm not one to play the 'race card,' '' he said.

The judge refused to comment on the issue, while Chief Assistant District Attorney David Lock would only say that the attorney from his office who handled the Blackburn case did ask for the maximum sentence of 10 years. Blackburn had no past criminal record.

Police said the shooting took place after Blackburn asked Murphy for a cigarette, to which the youth responded, ''I don't support your habit.''

That's when Blackburn asked Murphy to leave his yard. Murphy walked as far as the curb when Blackburn went into the house and returned with a .357 caliber Magnum handgun. The youth pointed the gun at Murphy's head and then fired, according to an eyewitness' testimony.

Murphy was transported to the hospital, where he died 12 hours later. A Chatham County grand jury refused to indict Blackburn on murder charges in Murphy's death, opting instead to charge the youth with manslaughter.

Blackburn remains in the Chatham County Jail awaiting transfer to the state prison where he will serve his sentence.

I do believe this is standard practice of the "if she does not lend a smoke, she does not poke" rule.
