radarlove: I've never lost my faith in humanity, only my faith in the false systems they've continually built around themselves and become dependent on.

We see a lot of nasty and hate-filled news these days, but that is largely because those systems are failing and people are beginning to panic.

Soon, very soon, an event will happen that will be so large and so catastrophic that all of those systems will be destroyed entirely.

And in that time that many will fear to be mankind's darkest hour, when the comforts and order of civilization have been obliterated, I promise you this- you will see humanity justify it's very existence in the most beautiful ways imaginable, and you will once again believe in a merciful and loving Creator when you see Him reflected in your neighbor's eyes.

Merciful and loving.... sure.

whither_apophis: Can't link, mobile, but Keisha Thomas protecting a guy at a KKK rally is a good one. Backstory, she was at a counter protest of the klan rally and the crowd spotted a guy with a Confederate flag t-shirt. Crowd surrounded the guy and started hitting him, and she put herself between them and stopped the assault.

I thought you weren't supposed to covet thy neighbor ... also, when do you define "very soon"? And how do you know? Is it aliens? It's aliens, isn't it?

Who said anything about covetousness? This will be about understanding. Besides, at that point none of us will likely have anything left to covet- we'll all be eating from the same bowl of dust.

Very soon is, I suppose, a relative term. Be patient. You won't be waiting much longer.

I know this because this has been the observed pattern of things for the past 13.5 billion years- when the natural order is eschewed by a strong but foreign system, the natural order self corrects with catastrophic results for said system. This has happened over and over again, on every possible scale, and it has always happened the same.

I know it will happen soon because we are already seeing crucial components failing in the system that we call civilization.

I know that it will happen for all of us because all of the components of that system are now interconnected globally. Knock out the support struts of that system, and they all come crashing down

And I know that humanity will pull through and be better for it, because that is what humanity was designed to do.

I don't think I'd put money on it being aliens, but then if aliens landed tomorrow I doubt I'd really trust them, either. Der took er jerbs.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Kaldea: I have been so depressed lately. I have Crohn's and it's been keeping me in the hospital and out of work and making me postpone my classes and my life. I'm demoralized by it, and I feel every day that I am just getting older and losing time to experience life the way I wish I could. This helped me peek my head out of the shadows and smile. I feel a much better, just from these pictures. I feel like I'm stronger knowing that there are things like this in the world.

Now this one hit home and Im sorry for the snerk. My oldest had UC at age 17. After 2 years and 3 major surgeries, he's back close to normal but has missed so much. Keep faith and stay strong.

Thank you both so much. It's really unreal how much this has ended up devouring the past several years of my life. When I first had problems, they thought it was just my gallbladder. They took that out at 16, then when nothing improved, it was deemed an unnecessary surgery. Since then I've gone from Colitis, UC, and then Crohn's from the different diagnoses. I've had easily 20 CT scans, 6 colonoscopies, a few ultrasounds, and probably about 4 months of my life admitted into one hospital or another.

My job thankfully is big enough to consistently offer some sort of leave, but usually unpaid, and my managers are less than understanding. I even had them tell me while I was in the hospital during Christmas that "you know, you said you would have this handled by now. We need you here. I thought this would have been fixed by now".

I'm 23 and doing everything in my power to finish college with a 4.0 and pursue my dreams, but it gets tough when you pay your own bills, own education, own medical expenses, and have no real outlet to branch out to to share stories of success to stay motivated.

Thanks for reminding me that I can smile. Really, thank you. :)

you know, (steps over the main meaning of your comment), it's actually funny how most of the people I've seen with this treatment fit the same 'look' as me. Tall, pale, european, usually red hair. When I used to go in for Remicade infusions, the room would have about 8 chairs different patients were in, and I'd say that almost every time, the majority of the room looked like a group of relatives.

I feel a much better, just from these pictures. I feel like I'm stronger knowing that there are things like this in the world.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in University. I know it's horrible. Here's some rambling advice:
- Life has handed you lemons. You're going to have to make lemonade. I know that sounds terribly trite but you've been dealt a shiatty hand (ha ha, get it? yes, poop jokes) and you're going to have to play it. Seriously, my point is don't wait around for it to get better. Life your live and treat every day as precious.
- You may get better. Twenty years later I live a fairly normal life. Through drugs and figuring out what foods I can eat and probably just some luck, my disease doesn't cause me the problems it used to.
- Social stuff: urgh. This was the worst. Sitting in lectures, trying to socialize, everything for me was a problem. I was shy and introverted when I arrived at University, and the onset of Crohn's just made me more shy and more introverted. I don't know what to tell you here. One day you'll realize that yes, sometimes embarrassing things happens but it's not the end of the world. Try to keep it in perspective and don't let your disease keep you from everything.
- If you do end up working towards a degree, play the medical card if you need to. I got credit (but no mark) for two terms because I was in and out of hospital and just couldn't get all the assignments done. In some courses I had to write exams the next term, and in others the prof just gave me credit. If you honestly need to do this, do not feel guilty about it for a second. Remember that after your first job post-degree, nobody will ever look at your transcript again. It's not a big deal.

I was a runner before Crohn's and eventually I became a runner again after the worst past. Every time I run or do something else that is a wee biatchallenging for someone with IBD I give a mental "fark you Crohn's" and celebrate the fact that I'm living a happy live.

Good luck.

Banned on the Run: Reminds me of:

[softballnation.net image 365x512]

Story if you don't know:
The girl in red hit a HR, her first ever. Tore her ACL as she excitedly rounded 1st. Rules state her teammates couldn't help her. 1st baseman (baseperson?) asks ump if the rules disallow the other team helping, which they don't. They carry her around the bases, helping her touch all 4 bags. Maroon team loses by one run and is knocked out of their college playoff.

I'm all for people helping people, but I've always had an issue with that kind of thing. Competitions are supposed to put two individuals or teams against each other and whoever wins moves forward. Bad luck (like a poorly-timed injury) is supposed to be a part of that competition. I know if I were that girl in the picture with the torn ACL or even just a member of her team, I would personally consider everything that was achieved after that point (do you know if they won their playoff or not?) to be undeserved and meaningless. There are many situations that call for charity, but pure competition isn't one of them.

theknuckler_33: The fact that some gays feel that being proud of being gay means parading around in your underwear actually takes away some of my faith in humanity.

Imagine Ma and Pa Kettle visiting SF and hitting the Wharf and Chinatown as is typical of tourists, then seeing there's a parade! Oh, joy! What they see in the Gay Pride Parade they will take back with them to Independence Kansas and tell everyone they know -- verifying every single nasty rumor they had ever heard about teh gheys. If the gay community wants middle America to accept them, they need to stop that shiat at the parade. Now I'll admit I haven't seen a gay pride parade in years, so maybe they have clamped down on the extremist behavior.
