The government shouldn't be telling people what medicines to take unless there is a legitimate concern for pandemic. Sexually transmitted diseases aren't pandemics any more than alcoholism or drug addiction. They're entirely avoidable by not participating in risky behaviors. This isn't Smallpox.

It amazes me that the modern GOP is actually fighting the prevention of a contagious virus that gives you cancer. Exactly how bad does this stuff have to be before they agree widespread medical countermeasures are called for? Full-body spontaneous combustion?

(If it was a fungus that only ate Bibles, the tax rate would be 90% tomorrow.)

Or maybe they feel like they've already done enough, protecting us all from Iraqi WMDs and all.

ghare: Lucky LaRue: ghare: Rincewind53: For those of you saying "Birth control is cheap, it's only $50 a month! Why should the government cover it?", I want to tell you the story of a woman I saw in court earlier this week. She was in for a driving while suspended, and the judge took pity on her and dismissed her case but for court fines. They were $30. She was on Social Security Disability, and told the judge that she simply could not pay $30 until next month's check came in, because she just did not have any more money except to pay for necessities.

So please, tell me how this woman should just buy her birth control, how she should just buy vaccines for her children, and how she can easily afford everything else.

Just being disabled is no excuse for not being able to afford basic necessities, and having to live of government theft programs. IT'S IN THE BIBLE, YOU DOLT!

Well, it looks like we've gone live.. it was fun while it lasted..

Oh yeah $5 a month makes your posts valid. YOU DOLT.

I used to be stupid like Lucky LaRue, and then I realized I'd be better off spending that $5 a month on a frapuccino. And then I took an arrow to the knee.

Still, I wonder how much overwhelming support we could drum up for universal HPV vaccination if scientists came out and said that the risk of cancer from BJ's was too high to risk and all women should immediately stop offering them until they were vaccinated?

Lucky LaRue: I know the comments so far have been pretty disrespectful to Governor Haley, but before you decide to cast any other dispersions on her character, I'd be interested to know how much money you want from me and the other tax payers to pay for this mandated $130/dose vaccine. How many lives is it going to save? 1,000,000? Then it may just be worthwhile.

But, really, at some point you have to look at the numbers and put your money to work where its going to do the most good, and if this is only going to help a couple thousand people dodge cancer, then maybe it makes sense to spend the money elsewhere.

Number of HPV-Associated Cancer Cases per YearDuring 2003-2007, an average of 31,392 cancers were potentially associated with HPV (rate of 10.6 per 100,000) in the United States. The table below shows the average number of cases and the incidence rate for each type of HPV-associated cancer.

So cost/benefit analysis has no place in the legislative process? I don't think it's your sarcasm detector that's broken...

So can we maybe do some cost/benefit analysis of invading Iraq? That thing that cost a couple trillion dollars, maybe more? Hm?

$130 X 10 million young people a year is $1.3 billion. So that's about the cost of one F-35. That's the cost of about one-third of the "additional spending bills" that popped up for Iraq every three months or so back in the day, on top of the several-hundred-billion per year that got spent upfront.

Can we do some cost/benefit analysis of building a wall all the way along the US borders? Costs tens of billions and keeps nobody out. Bring along a ladder, boom, you're over.

Can we do some cost/benefit analysis of slashing taxes on the wealthy while also waging two costly wars?

Can we do some cost/benefit analysis of treating (or not having to treat) several thousand cases of cancer every year? If each case of cancer costs $500,000, and there are an extra 1000 of them, that's $500 million. So we spent $1.1 billion more than we saved to keep 1000 people alive. (And I think it will do better than prevent 1000 cases a year.)

Now let's hear some more about how we have to do *anything*, spend *anything*, no cost is too great, to prevent another 9/11 when 3000 people died keep America (i.e., me) safe, no matter what, Support the Troops!

Keep America Safe!

Remember the Heroes!

More "Defense" Spending Than Rest of World Combined!

Eternal War!

Keep Me Safe!

Nice try, with that "cost/benefit analysis" thing.

kingoomieiii: It was nothing to do with money, because the cost was tiny. The republican opposition had EVERYTHING to do with providing red meat to their awful base. "PREVENTING SLUT CANCER LETS GIRLS BE SLUTS".

I remember saying this back then: they won't be too thrilled when their daughter who actually waits for marriage gets "slut cancer" because her new husband carries the virus (which as I noted before is often undetectable in men).

I still stand by that. Not that I understand why these people are so obsessed with there being "punishments" for sex. Sex is fun. Sex is farking awesome. Sex is the best thing that you can do for free (okay, this is Fark, but some of us don't pay for it.) Why shouldn't we enjoy it, be safe about it, and not act like there should be some horrible punishment for having it? If it wasn't supposed to be fun, it wouldn't feel as good as it does.

Second, HPV is a cause of other cancers besides cervical. It is a known cause of about 80% of cases of oropharyngeal cancer. It's associated with other types too, including penile and anal cancers, so it's not only something that women have to worry about. The CDC estimates that 25,000 cancers per year are caused by HPV in the US.

Lucky LaRue:

- There are approximately 550,000 girls under the age of 18 in South Carolina, and it costs $130/dose for the vaccine. That means South Carolina tax payers would pay north of $70 million to fund this effort.

- About 0.01% of the over-18 population in the US develop cervical cancer every year. That translates to about 60 SC women each year.

Let's be generous and say that, over the course of 60 years, there will be 60 new cases of cervical cancer that could otherwise have been avoided, for a total of 3600 cases. 1/3 will die. The question is whether or not spending $70 million to save 1200 people is the right thing. Could the money have been spent on something that would have made a bigger difference?

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Isn't that the exact same logic that teabaggers claim the "socialist death panels" are using?

Maybe.. So what? I'm not a teabagger or a herbal teabagger. I'm just looking at it from (admittedly seriously flawed) statistics. The numbers, as I run them are this:
