FTA: Bill Maher, a comedian who donated $1 million to President Obama's superPAC, attacked the only Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus while describing the GOP as "the party of the apes."

Maher summarized that last 20 years of American politics as "the Rise of the Party of the Apes," - a riff on the movie title, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. "t's the Republicans who are crazy," Maher added in his blog post, directing readers to Washington Post op-ed by Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein that dubs the Republican Party "the problem" with American politics.

The author Joel Gehrke clearly, desperately make the connection that Bill Maher didn't intend at all, claiming Bill called West an ape. From the article, I can't tell if Bill's comments about the GOP being apes and West are from the same blog post. I strongly suspect this is more manufactured rage, jehovahs witness protection and cman.

Look guys, I'd love to discuss real issues with you. But Joel Gehrke is pulling crap out of his butt and throwing it against the monkey cage bars. Please get back with us here on real issues. Defending the crap Joel Gehrke is feeding to people doesn't make us or anyone want to change our minds and votes.

I think Maher is awesome.

Republicans get butthurt because he does a great job of skewering the fact that they threw open their arms and invited all the dumbest, meanest, most backwards-ass shiat-heels in the country to come in and set the tone for their movement.

Rush Limbaugh and his ilk have made the Republican Party the party of guys who say things like "theys a differnce between 'blacks' and 'ni**ers'" and think they're being both profound and egalitarian.

And the party has done nothing to slow or stop it or discourage. They have instead, bowed down to it, and made the xenophobic, reactionary, mean-spirited, theocratic, ignorant farking "base" the moral and intellectual heart and soul of the party.

Bill Maher is a "dick" because he doesn't sugar-coat his jokes to avoid hurting their feelings, and If he did, they'd just call him an appeasing pussy.

I love Jon Stewart, but the way some people have taken his "you're not helping" to heart is making those on the left simpering pussies who are afraid to truly speak out and speak up for fear of giving up some moral highground. And whenever anyone else does, they throw 'em under the bus and pretend they never heard of 'em.

Quit farking worrying about being the nice guy to a bunch of nutjobs who hate you and would be happy to see you at the bottom of a lake. Quit jumping through their hoops.

Some farking Fetal Alcohol Syndrome victim makes an incredibly ridiculously retarded manipulative leap attempting to contorting something BIll Maher said into something racist ("he said the word 'apes' and then three paragraphs later, he mentioned Allen West's name... Racist!!!"), and the liberals in here don't even bother to double-check before throwing Maher under the bus.

They're winning because the left dances like puppets on the emotional string they pull. So desperate to prove that your the good guys, you jump through every hoop they put in front of you... even though none of it is going to have any impact on how they feel about you. (they hate you)

Actually, he called the entire Republican caucus apes. So maybe he what meant is that they're rare white apes and Allen West is a great silverback gorilla that has emerged suddenly from the jungle and the white apes see him and say to themselves, "My goodness, that is a very black ape. Look at his fur, I've never seen fur that black. He's so big and black." And the white apes are at once very intrigued by this new black up but also very intimidated so they scurry away to the dark corners of their caves to wait, all of them except Eeekah, a young female, a white ape so white that she seems blonde, an innocent and kind-hearted female ape who has not even had her first children yet. And she is curious about this new ape and approaches him with a welcoming smile and gently lays her hand on his chest and the other white apes creep from their hiding places to watch with a strange blend of shame and arousal as the black ape scoops her up into his thick, arms and lays her down on the floor. And she seems scared at first, she's trembling and the noises she is making sound more like hoots and screeches of pain than pleasure, but as it continues there can be no doubt and the other female apes, hiding behind their mates, cast astonished glances at each other in the dark and wonder why nobody's ever made them make noise like that. I'm not sure, that's one possible scenario, I guess.

Yes, he's a dick.

He also donated $1 million to Obama's Super-PAC, and has been a fixture at Democrat fundraisers for years until a few months ago, when publicity about his comments made him radioactive. Now suddenly he "doesn't speak for the left." How convenient.

But they'll still keep his money.

This thread reminds me why, as a leftist, other leftists often piss me off. They want so badly to distance themselves from the assholes on the right that they make false equivalencies demonizing their own side. For example many -- as is demonstrated in this thread -- argue that Maher is the left's Limbaugh. Are you farking kidding me? Limbaugh speaks entirely in lies and propaganda, while Maher (and if you regularly watch his show, you would know this) speaks about learning factual information and dispelling our tendency to accept propaganda mythology.

It is similar to the many FARK atheists who claim that Richard Dawkins (and Maher, for that matter) harm their cause, rather than speak for it. To those I want to ask if they've ever actually read Dawkins. I love Bill Maher simply for the fact that he doesn't second guess his own commentary, and won't apologize simply because somebody is offended (or just claims to be). I want more people on the left who are willing to stand up for what they know is right, and stop compromising and trying to find middle ground with the teabaggers and fools on the right.

Horseshiat from top to bottom.

a.) I "defend" Maher (more accurately, he needs no defense, and I point that out).
b.) Maybe he's self-absorbed, but he also exhibits a lot of compassion for those who aren't as fortunate as he is,
c.) Intellectual/pseudo-intellectual... ehhh, whatever, he's a farking sharp guy who says a lot of smart things.
d.) He's vastly different from Rush... all the things I mentioned above PLUS the fact that Rush's show is a man and mic, with no guests, and only a smattering of phone calls that he won't hesitate to hang up on if they say something he doesn't like. Maher's show is a roundtable of people form various walks of life and a mix of political views... and when the liberal crowd boos or yells over a conservative guest, Maher quiets them and allows the conservative to finish what he's saying.
e.) Lots of people care what he has to say. I recently saw Maher live -on St. Patrick's Day- and he filled a concert hall... in ALABAMA.

Quit throwing smart aggressive liberals under the bus just because conservatives urge you to. They sure as hell aren't going to throw Rush Limbaugh under the bus to get your approval... and Rush REALLY IS a hyper-partisan, lying racist, sexist, turd.

This is why liberals are mocked for being spineless milquetoasts. Being the "good guy" isn't about being the "nice guy" or being unfailingly polite. It's about standing up and fighting for the right causes.

Cybernetic: I think it's fair to say that if Limbaugh had referred to the Democrats as "the party of the apes," it would have immediately been branded a racist comment, and that the people who are giving Bill Maher a pass (in this thread and elsewhere) would be calling for Limbaugh's head.

These are language standards that liberals themselves have created, and continue to expand. Just this week, Angela Rye, the executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, said that the word "cool" is coded racial language when applied to the Obama.

You want to call that "coded racial language"? Fine. But then it's coded racial language regardless of the political affiliation of the speaker. There's not going to be one standard for conservatives and another standard for liberals. Conservatives are holding liberals to the same standards that liberals apply to conservatives, and it's tying the liberals in knots. It's hilarious. And it's long overdue.

Context. Context. Calling a party apes, in pun, then happening to mention a black man isn't offensive, regardless of the speaker. If there were a linkage, maybe.

The Right Shift
By Bill Maher

Good news: last month, for the first time in weeks, Congress passed a bill! And wait until you hear what you get: by a vote of 78 to 20, the Senate voted to extend the life of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. ...People, please! Control yourselves!

Yes, the Import-Export Bank. It's been around for 80 years. They re-upped it for another three. Now, what do you 80% of Americans who disapprove of the job Congress is doing have to say about that?? Hit the links, Speaker Boehner! You've earned it.

Now, if I were a Washington pundit, I'd launch into some boring speech about how both sides are equally to blame, and then I'd call it a day and we'd all meet at Katherine Graham's house for cocktails. Which is weird because Katherine Graham is dead. But this is why you never see us booking George Will and Peggy Noonan on my show (besides the fact that they wouldn't do it): Because the same old Washington pundits haven't said anything interesting since disco. Also because the idea that the blame for our government's dysfunction is equally shared by the parties just is a giant, steaming mound of horseshiat and anyone who has paid attention to politics over the last 20 years knows it. Or as I like to call it, "The Rise of the Party of the Apes."

In fact, recently Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein, two old wonks who have been in Washington as long as the Potomac, wrote a book called "It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism" in which they basically say, flat out, what I say every week: it's the Republicans who are crazy. And they wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post to go along with the book called, "Let's Just Say It: The Republicans Are the Problem."

They write: "We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party." And they're not saying Democrats are blameless and perfect. We all know there's only been one perfect man in human history. And that's David Beckham.

But it reminded me of something Barney Frank recently said: "...people have said to me, well, why can't you work things out with the Republicans, and my answer to my friends has been: Exactly on what issues do you think Michele Bachmann and I can compromise?" Basically Barney is saying, look, how do you expect me to work on the 2+2=4 bill when their side believes math is a liberal plot to turn your kid queer?

Take Dick Lugar. Who was always a staunch conservative, just not the modern-day insane variety. He was just throttled in the Republican Senate primary in Indiana by a Tea Party guy named Richard Mourdock. And after Mourdock won he said this about working with the other side: "I certainly think bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view." Which is sort of like saying to your girlfriend, "I think both our sexual needs will best be fulfilled by you blowing me."

Or take Allen West. Seriously, take him to the padded cell and give him 20 CCs of the high test. Ornstein and Mann start off their Post op-ed by noting that recently Rep. Allen West said that there are "78 to 81" Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. And not one Republican said, "Allen, come on. You're making us look dumb." Not one of the Republican candidates for president said anything. Because in today's Republican Party, that's not even edgy anymore. They probably saw him later on and were like, "Word, Allen. Word." Because that's how they think black people talk.

There are something like 350 words between "apes" and "Allen West". Hell, Allen West isn't even the first republican he mentions.

I understand now why conservatives struggle with racism so much. They say actually racist things and get shouted down for it...then when someone else mentions one of a handful of buzzwords in any context whatsoever, it is assumed they should be shouted down, as well. It's only fair.

I guess I'm the voice of the opposition today. I think Bill Mahar is funny and his show can be informative. It is disingenuous at best to suggest that he does not sometimes speak for liberals. Of course, here is where things always get fuzzy. See, when he spoke about the chickens coming home to roost on 9/11, he said what many liberals were thinking...but he was also correct. When he said that Cheney was a war criminal and the Bush Administration lied to get us into Iraq he was speaking for liberals...but he was also correct. When he says that much of the criticism of President Obama is rooted in racism he is speaking for liberals...but he is also correct. Republicans likes to confuse right and wrong with left and right. It has gotten to the point that people don't care about the merits of a person's position, they just care about which side he/she falls on. I believe this helps them to determine whether or not the person is worth listening to or if he's a lying sack. Problem is, Republicans have spent a significant amount of time on the wrong side of history. This means that anyone who can think logically or has compassion for their fellow man is always at odds with the party. From my perspective, Bill Mahar's positions are normally based in common sense, not partisanship.

But here's a crucial point - he didn't single out black republicans for the ape slur, AND the vast majority of republicans are white.

What kind of racist douchebag would jump to the conclusion that Maher was specifically referring to one of the few black republicans?

As reiterated a thousand god damn times -- one is a political talk show host on public access radio, the other is a noted comedian with a late night series on a subscription network.

You really can't put much weight on Maher's commentary when at heart his job is to entertain and induce laughter (and remember that not all jokes are created equally) -- and while I'm not implying that Limbaugh should ever be taken seriously, there are people of lesser intelligence who do see him as a valid source of news and current affairs. Given Limbaugh also has a significantly larger audience, the act of comparing the two is hardly fair to begin with.

Word, Bill, Word.

"Maher says the GOP is the party of apes, Allen West is in the GOP, therefore Maher is calling West an ape" - really? Is that what we're supposed to be outraged about? Really?. FFS.

Maher's a nut, but sometimes I think the Republicans believe racism is something liberals invented to "trap" them. Or maybe they think we were all born yesterday.

More ginned up nonsense. Maher mentioned the GOP as "Party of the Apes", not even making it the crux of his column. Five paragraphs later, he mentions Allan West. No mention of "apes" was made in that paragraph. I would have admitted it was sloppily worded if it said "another example of GOP ape is Allan West"- this didn't happen.

Nothing to see here folks. Just right-wing ginned up "liberals are the real racists" nonsense.

So it's a day that ends in 'Y?'

They just can't stand when someone actually calls them out on their idiocy. I especally like how half the posters didn't even bother to open the link, where TFA specifically states he called "THE GOP the PARTY OF APES."

Let's apply the same standard that liberals apply to Limbaugh. Maher has spoken at numerous high-profile Democrat events. He has donated large sums of money. He has a media presence in which he espouses his opinion and sometimes makes controversial statements that offend people. And neither Maher nor Limbaugh is a "spokesman" in any official capacity for any political party or organization of which I am aware.

If that makes Limbaugh the "spokesman" for the right, then it makes Maher a damned good candidate for "spokesman" for the left.

Steele, the former head of the rnc, while head, was forced to apologize to Rush for saying he's not in control of the republican party, and called him a leader of the republican party. Subtle things like that are the difference here. No democrat was ever forced to apologize to Mahr.

Have any left-wing politicians publicly apologized for speaking ill of Maher?

Have there been any Democrats who were primaried because Maher said they weren't liberal enough?

Do any left-wing trolls parrot Maher's words ad nauseum as gospel?

No?

Then shut up.

I've highlighted the stupid part of your comment. Why is it stupid? I'll let my esteemed colleague explain:

stoli n coke: According to TFA, Maher called the GOP the "party of the apes," which implies that all GOP members, black, white, brown, teal, magenta, and mauve, are apes.

Racist statements aren't inclusive of many different races.

The fact that you don't understand this is problematic, and calls into question either your critical thinking skills, your intellectual honesty, or both.

Maher is a neanderfark. I can't stand him, and I certainly don't want him to be speaking on my behalf. That notwithstanding, there isn't anything even the slightest bit racist about his comments here.

Bill Maher is a dick and he in no way speaks for "the left".

Rush Limbaugh is a dick and the GOP invites him to be the keynote speaker at many of their events.

But you can't see the difference, because you're an idiot.

Bill Maher may be a dick (and it's lame that he continues to mention his $1 million dollar contribution) but he does, for the most part, deal with facts. He also seems open to new ideas occasionally. I'm not white-knighting the dude, but just b/c he's a dick doesn't put him anywhere NEAR the talk-show hosts on the right.

Plus, the way the right ignores the fact that Limbaugh speaking at CPAC pretty much makes him a de-facto spokesperson for the party is embarrassing to watch.
