The fact that we westerners settled on the utensils we have is an indication of how lazy and barbaric we are.

The only citation I can give to back this up is the Asian cultures that love their chopsticks. Some consider it offensive to have any metal (let alone a knife) at the table at all. So everything is prepared in a manner that it is not required.

The forks date from the 8th to 9th Century. They are from the area presently known as Iran (used to be called Persia).

Three tines is not a fork. Three tines is a trident. Forks are for eating, tridents are for ruling the seven seas.

Poll: My family always sets the table with the silverware trifecta of knife, for and spoon. My wife's family only places out a fork and knife. After 7+- years, it still drives me batty.

Do any farkers just place fork/knife? Why would you do that?

/I understand situations when it's obvious no spoon is necessary. I'm talking a roast pork dinner with corn and mashed potatoes. A fork for those two items?

yeah, after using a lot chopsticks, forks do really seem barbaric.

Especially for scratching those hard to get at ear itches.

Corn and mashed potatoes? Really? You can't go with peas and mashed potatoes? EAT YOUR DAMN GREENS!

Yeah, just use a fork on the potatoes, use the potatoes to pick up the peas.

While TFA gives a slideshow (deslided) of specialized forks many are questionable because an ordinary fork would work fine for those cases.

But not so for a snail fork.
