I remember reading that Meaney tells the story of "I pick up the script, and I can't find myself in there. Pages and pages and no O'Brien. I finally point this out to Frakes and he laughs, 'They gave you a first name, dumbass.'"

Mugato: OgreMagi: FirstNationalBastard: It was also the Gene Roddenberry-led seasons of TNG that were terrible.

A friend of mine was on the crew for ST:TNG the first few years. He said that Roddenberry was such an ass on the set that the actors threatened to walk out at one point.

People hate on Berman and rightfully so towards the end but if someone didn't take over the reigns from Roddenberry, TNG and Trek in general wouldn't have made it very far.

But yes, Voyager and all the TNG movies were terrible, with the possible exception of the Borg one.

nah, it pretty much sucks too. the only really GOOD trek films are Khan and the reboot. (sorry, purists, but it is farking true) i have an affinity to Star Trek 4 - this time we got whales, but that isn't because it is exceptionally good, it is just a fun movie (much like my favorite superman film is "Superman 3 - this time we got Richard Pryor").

KingKauff: Exactly! Voyager was the best

(Notsureifserious.jpg)

Voyager was like Gilligan's Island in space.

Crew: We found a way home!

Janeway: Ok, let's try it!

Crew: There's the worm hole/teleportation array/alien technology!

Janeway: Ok, let's go home!

Almost there... Almost there.... Just about there...

Explosion/alien attacker/saboteur/Chakotay spills his Romulan Ale on the console happens!

Crew: Awwww.......

Janeway: It's ok, we'll just keep looking.

Ship flies off to space. The end.

and yet he is famous for playing one of the worst star trek characters, got to bang ashley judd, and I am working an IT job making pretty crappy money.

life ain't fair, man. life ain't fair.

From your perspective, sure. But he feels slighted, too. His parents wished it was he who died instead of John Cusack.
/can't say I blame them

thanks. you have brightened my dreary day.

Heh, I just listened to an old podcast where Wil was talking about negotiating his contract with the TNG folks. Apparently he and his agent wanted more money, and instead, the producers offered to make his character a lieutenant.

Which is what made DS9 good, they didn't buy in to Gene's idealized universe.

And now that I've said that, I'll get slapped with the troll label...

You forgot to add that DS9 is just a ripoff of Babylon 5 so 4/10

According to wikipedia, DS9 aired a year before Babylon 5.

Babylon 5 was pitched to Paramount, among other places, and turned down. But when the makers of Star Trek decided to follow that idea, they had the resources to get their show on the screen first.

This still does not diminish the awesomeness that is Deep Space 9.

Bathia_Mapes: FirstNationalBastard: swahnhennessy: Klivian: There was a reason it was cancelled.

swahnhennessy: There's a reason it was canceled

Yep. NBC discovered Demographics about 6 months too late.

NBC thought TOS was a failure because of the overall ratings. Within 6 months of the shows cancellation, they started receiving info based on demographic breakdowns. They then discovered they had killed the golden goose that would have handed them the all important 18-34 demographic by shuffling Trek to the Friday Night death slot, cutting the budget (which led to shiattier episodes) and then canceling it.

Yes, season 3 of TOS was pretty shiatty, but if NBC hadn't farked the show over by cutting the budget, driving Roddenberry out, and putting it in the death slot, Season 3 may well have been a very good season.

Exactly. Their budget was so bad by the third season that they were resorting to making props from stuff the Mission: Impossible set had thrown out.

Things like using the packaging the MI tape recorders came in, especially styrofoam. TOS prop guys would cut it into interesting shapes, spray paint it, and voila, space art.

Yep.

And Spectre of the Gun. What was to be a great Western episode with decent period sets turned into the half-assed "half the saloon is missing and it has no roof, because aliens!" set.

And how does anyone who calls themselves "a pretty big geek" go through life without ever seeing real Star Trek? I think you overestimate yourself.
