DancingElkCondor: For Presidential eligibility....one must also be natural born....born on US soil AND parents must be US citizens at time of birth

And PRECISELY where does it state THAT in the Constitution?

Short answer, IT DOES NOT...

I'm sure our resident Federalist troll will be along to explain how words spoken on the floor of Congress 150 years ago clearly and precisely state that the drafters of the Constitution really meant it to have that meaning, so therefore it must have that meaning even though what they said wasn't even a formal debate over the wording of an amendment. Or that the debate was really over whether someone born of foreign parents, who was a slave in the South, could ever be considered a full citizen of the US with full citizenship rights.

Freaking trolls.

Corvus: Nixon had an idea that everyone should have a minimum income and if you didn't make that much the government paid you money to get you to that level. Not for X weeks, not if you got laid off, just for anybody. Can you believe a Democrat saying that now?

It really hurts my brain to consider that Nixon would actually be a sane Republican these days.

It nearly bursts a blood vessel when people describe the climate in terms of "both sides being partisan to the extreme."

I can't help, though, but feel awe at how well the GOP has both steered the discourse and managed to move the center so far (even before Citizens United). Post-Citizens United I can only hate, fear, and bemoan what may come unless some serious action can be taken before it's game-over.

Actually, no. It's easy and amusing to make fun of these people's delusions, but I suspect the decision to throw Rubio under the bus was an agonizing one. They really are willing to apply their crazy standards to one of their own and reluctantly reject his suitability for office. Give credit where credit is due; the 'Baggers have the courage of their convictions.

Look, the Constitution was written so it only applies to white male adults over the age of 40 who own real property in excess of 140 acres! Why can't people understand that?

DancingElkCondor: For Presidential eligibility....one must also be natural born....born on US soil AND parents must be US citizens at time of birth

NO. That is not what natural born means. If your born on us soil you are a natural born citizen period end of story. If both your parents, and arguably even one of your parents are US citizens, you are a natural born US citizen regardless of where you are born. We have a right as US citizens to impart that citizenship upon our children. There are only two kinds of citizenship, natural born, and naturalized. If you are a US citizen at birth then you are a natural born citizen and in regards to presidential eligibility.

Technically someone born of Martian parents would be non-human. In this hypothetical situation of Earth-born alien offspring, I suppose a tribunal would have to be set up to determine whether citizenship would be granted. And wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall during that meeting?

You either don't get it, or you are trying to use some sort of reverse psychology of nonsense in your defense. Obama is fullly exposed to be a usurper, in his historical record, and in his actions. Rubio and Jindal are being used to cover up for the tyranny that has been commited against we the people via the puppet masters hell bent on a new world order. Get a clue.

The RNC needs to wake up to the fact that most citizens don't want a repeat of the 2008 election results. WE NEED AN ALL AMERICAN PRESIDENT WHO ACTUALLY LOVES THE USA. (Not a closet Muslim from Kenya, Indonesia or Singapore)

Obama's Kenyan family considers him born in Kenya. Then after Kenyan dad leaves the U.S. the mother marries Lolo Soetoro in Indonesia, and Lolo adopts Obama so he can go to school at the Muslim madrassa. The most troubling is that the SS# used by Obama belonged to a Connecticut man who died in Hawaii, and grandma had access to those records during her job. Obama had never set foot in Connecticut, much less work there. But his first executive order was to seal all his and family's records, including passport records. But then no one should question the messiah king, but just elect him to four more years of merrily destroying this country to implement his socialist ideals.

I really hope these are trolls not insane people.

On one hand, I suppose it's nothing if not internally consistent, and there's a point or two for that.

On the other hand, it looks like we're going to have to expand the standard comeback to "We get it! He's not white!" That's going to be a pain to remember.

coyo: Washington wasn't legit then!

If we want to get pedantic about this, there is an exception carved out in the Constitution for people who were citizens of the US before the Constitution's adoption. That exception has been moot for 150-odd years, as everyone covered by it is now dead, but it is technically still on the books.

If time travel is ever invented, that exception is going to make things really interesting.

He's not a Muslim Arab (my guess is he's a polite agnostic or deist giving lip service to Christianity in order to keep his job) but you're not mistaking me for someone else. I believe I said something along the lines of "anything that tends to result in fewer Arabs is OK by me," and I stand by that statement. I'm not in favor of killing Arabs but I certainly have no problem with them vigorously murdering each other, especially when there's no one to blame for their fratricidal rage but themselves. However, today's creepy PC antisemitism will turn my failure to be upset when the sworn enemies of my people start killing each other over the issue of whether they will continue to live in a secular dictatorship or be given the chance to live in a religious one into it somehow being the Jews' fault that Arabs are now at each others' throats.

And as to the 'Baggers consistent racism, I believe while their original need to delegitimize Obama's presidency is at heart racist, their decision to dump Rubio has nothing to do with racism per se. They're realistic enough to realize that the Hispanics must be courted and would honestly prefer to be able to support him. They would feel obliged to reject Chester A. Arthur as well, in fact I'm curious to know if any earnest Teabagger is out there right now making a list of laws passed during the Arthur administration that must now be considered null and void.

Apparently there are arguments that historically the Constitutional language of "natural born citizen" was pretty thin and may not have included people whose parents were not born here. However, Congress codified the rules and he's now in the clear. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1401

What happens if a naturalized citizen ended up speaker of the house, and then ultimately president?
