It's only a dream for those that are concerned with winning. He doesn't come close to passing the ideological purity tests, which is what the majority of the party is concerned with.

Rubio has the charisma component to run for actual 2016 president DOWN. He doesn't bring in all Latinos, but he has to help with the Cubans in Florida, one of the biggest swing states in the nation.

If Romney had Rubio, Florida would be so much easier to win. And winning Florida would put Obama in an incredibly tough position because Florida is the biggest swing state: it has 29 votes, it's nearly worth 2 regular swing states!

There's a difference between losing a valiant fight (Dole) and losing by never showing up (Kerry). Romney's made it clear that he's running the Kerry playbook, offering nothing except a light alternative to the sitting president. There's also a difference between losing on behalf of a principled group of informed believers and losing on behalf of a bunch of unstable emotional zealots. The base is going to revile Romney and everyone associated with him for "losing an easy one."

Rubio would be a fool to tie his star to this campaign. On the other hand, he can make a fantastic, idealistic, broadly appealing speech in nationwide prime time at the convention and get people to start asking "why isn't this guy running."
