ph0rk: ""Finally, Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no,'""

Yes, vagina is the technical term. She tried to make it about her vagina.

Have you ever heard the word synecdoche? It's a rhetorical device in which the part is substituted for the whole or vice versa. Here, it's slightly non-standard. The representative--as you may have guessed from her title--represents her constituents in the legislature. She is the part that is substituted for the whole; one might even suggest that a representative democracy is in fact synecdoche writ large.

When she said "my vagina," that was synecdoche. Her vagina is representative of the vaginas of her female constituents.

If a representative uses the phrase "my freedom of speech" or "my car" or "my clean water" in a legislative floor speech, no one is going to suggest they're actually talking about their personal freedom/car/water. It's obvious that representative is referring to the freedoms/cars/water of their constituents, and possibly their state or country. It is obvious she was doing the same thing here. It is unreasonable to suggest that she was making this "about her vagina;" it was about the vaginas of all women in her district or the state of Michigan, and anyone not trying to be a demagogue would agree.

Therefore, she was censured because of the word "vagina," not because she spoke of "her" vagina. And as has already been clarified, using "vagina" instead of "uterus" is perfectly acceptable, as the process of abortion almost always deals with both (ignoring surgical abortions for ectopic pregnancies and the like).

Careful, he's going to tell you that no father ever in the history of the planet has ever been awarded sole custody of his child. Plus, he'll have links that have absolutely nothing to do with what he said to back him up.

It's funny. For all the stereotypical complaints on FARK about feminists, it's generally the "men's rights" people who are the most shrill, humorless, gender-obsessed and pedantic ... All the things feminists are perpetually accused of being.

Ah no, not really.

If it was about fetuses and babies, they'd support sex ed and condom use, like normal people. They do not.

WhippingBoy: Virtue: God Is My Co-Pirate: Here's an idea - be a man, not a whiny, biatching weasel

This is common.....once feminists have had their arguments destroyed they start with the name calling.

Lets just get it out of the way now.

1. I am dumb
2. I am fat
3. I live in my moms basement
4. I am ugly
5. I cant get laid
6. I am secretly gay
etc etc etc

I don't think any feminists have had their "arguments destroyed". However, I do agree that for a reasonable number of them, childish taunting and mocking do seem to be part of their arsenal whenever they're faced with an opinion they disagree with (no matter how sincere or respectfully that opinion is presented). "Oh noez, what about the menz?" and all that...

To be fair, I'm misquoted up there. I called him a mewling quim, not a whining biatching weasel.

Bingo! The GOP hates abortions, but they also hate contraceptives and responsible sexual education that doesn not push abstinence. They want to have their hair pie and, eat it too.

She made an inflationary comment designed to invoke an agitated response.

She got one.

I think it was the snotty, personalized tone more than the choice of term that incensed the republicans. From viewing the footage of the statement, it seems "Incensed" was exactly what she was going for. Her amendment for vasectomies was somewhat similar.

I find the fact that any legislator of any stripe can be barred from speaking in legislatory proceedings is offensive, but I do not live in Michigan.

/Not sure if anyone expected her statement coupled with the proposed amendment about banning vasectomies w ...

When someone points out hypocrisy, of course the hypocrites will consider it "inflammatory".

My preferred method of pointing out hypocrisy is to do so with a minimum of snark.

She wanted a big reaction and she got one. The comedy is the reaction just weakens the GOPs position on the issue, but I thought that was obvious.

/Also, I was hoping someone would think that "inflationary" was a penis joke

Virtue: Your turn .....dispute.

Well, to start: http://scholar.google.com/scholar?as_ylo=2008&q=gender+wage+gap&hl=en& as_sdt=0,34

From the Forbes "article": The wage gap statistic, however, doesn't compare two similarly situated co-workers of different sexes, working in the same industry, performing the same work, for the same number of hours a day. It merely reflects the median earnings of all men and women classified as full-time workers.

Except that social scientists do exactly that all the farking time. The gap shrinks, but it doesn't vanish.

I'm not reading the rest of those links. You can feel free to supple one, solitary link that goes to peer reviewed empirical research that demonstrates no gender wage gap, though.

Yes, according to someone selling a book on the topic from your POV, you're entirely correct. The rest of your citations are right-wing blogs and editorials with an axe to grind. Furthermore, what all made the wage gap decrease to the point it is now? Was it conservative lobbyists?

Virtue: Currently under the VAWA act if she beats the crap out of you with a frying pan you will go to jail and be convicted of domestic violence (See Duluth model)

I'm sorry but you're wrong. My wife worked at a domestic violence shelter, and she had clients that had been prosecuted for DV. Female clients, male victims. Meanwhile this is in the state that is most likely for a woman to be murdered by her male partner.

Virtue: Does she support legislation to allow men to terminate all parental rights and responsibilities as women can now?

If a woman gets an abortion, both parents are equally freed of financial responsibility. The argument is that pregnancy is a matter of the woman's body, as is abortion, so sorry that someone is making men pay child support for when they banged someone they couldn't otherwise stand.

I will give you kudos, though, for carefully picking your citations for maximum trolling effect. You own the thread.

rufus-t-firefly: An abortion is a medical procedure. The only person who has to make a decision about a medical procedure is the person directly affected. I don't get a say if my wife gets her tubes tied, and she doesn't get a say if I get a vasectomy. Likewise, if she chose to have an abortion (again, a medical procedure), I have no legal right to stop her.

But that is part of the issue. It's your child in there too! What if you wanted didn't want it killed? The men have no say in the outcome if whether or not THEIR child can be born or not. How is that fair?

For the record, while Virtue is clearly a tool, I wasn't particularly trying to make value judgments about the men's rights movement vs. feminism. I just think it's funny that we see tons of stereotypical complaints about feminists on FARK, but it seems to me that the usual men's rights posters are the ones who personify those traits most often here.

That is not quite the same. That is a social trend, and has nothing to do with legislation and actual, legal rights. There is no law in the books, or even proposed, saying that circumcision must be done. It may not be right, but it is not comparable with trying to pass *actual laws* regarding women's parts an what they are allowed to do/not do with them.

Try again.
