Great to hear he's doing great after open heart surgery.

/I submitted this story with a less cute headline.

SilentStrider: Good, I hope he recovers and lives a long healthy life.

FTFA: After a number of measures to preserve his pulmonary valve, doctors replaced it last week with a porcine valve that should last 10 to 15 years, according to the website of the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

"We're hopeful that this will be -- quite possibly -- the last major surgery that Max will need," said Michael Silka, co-director of The Heart Institute at the hospital.

I guess we'll see.

According to some of the comments the adult procedure is less invasive.

The headline is really funny when you say it aloud in James Earl Jones voice.

Be well my little Darth friend, you brought me many laughs last year when I was away from my family dealing with my fathers death.

May you rule the galaxy some day.

Doctor's side? Sounded better if they used "doc's side" instead...

/no, NOT the shoe, either

He's more machine now than man, twisted and evil.

Also, how can you be 7, not have seen star wars and you play a star wars character in a commercial?

2030: Well, he grew up and enslaved us all but I still don't regret doing that heart surgery on him back in 2012.

Live long and prosper, young padawan.
But if that pulmonary valve starts going south, may you at least live long enough to get a BJ from a very hot babysitter. That and the VW commercial will probably have made it all worthwhile.

/I checked. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this post.

Mommy and Daddy are Star Trek fans.

It is in this order:
Trek, Gate, Search and then Wars, kid. Oh why couldn't you get the part of young Wesley Crusher?

Hopefully in 10 to 15 years we have some better technology, maybe be able to grow a replacement from stem cells and implant it with scopes.

Whatever, you can't help but feel good about this. Here's to his long and happy life.

It's a story with a lot of heart. Or, at least, a hypertrophied ventricle.

That caught my attention right away. It'll last fifteen years but it's your last major surgery... you do the math.

2012-06-19 02:35:51 PM
I wonder and hope that, maybe, his own bodily cells will replace those in the heart valve? I know this can happen with some transplant patients of various types where the body will "maintain" the organ at some point and the patient does not need immune suppressants. I'm sure some medic who should actually be working at the moment will chime in on that topic while enjoying coffee and a donut.

The cynic in me is more like, "in 10 to 15 years strep/staph will be immune to most of our less-toxic antibiotics and he'll come down in treatment resistant endocarditis after vegetations form on his artificial valve."

//hope we actually do get useful stem cell applications
/// the "post-antibiotic" era is going to be fun

We're close already. I have a friend whose shoulder is being rebuilt with stem cells. She blew it out playing lacrosse in college, and the professional skydiving put her in constant pain. 2 rounds of stem cells and she's got about 90% of the tissue and strength back, and she's almost pain-free.

Not that any of it means much to Max. He still hasn't seen any of the movies.

"He's a little scared, still," his mother has said.

He just didn't have the heart for it.
