In the real world, the cube case was proved in 1802. The general case, all exponents > 2, was proved in 1995 as the craziest proof of our time.

I assume the 24th century reference refers to the TNG episode where Picard mentions it hasn't been solved in 800 years. Watch Deep Space 9 - Dax basically issues a correction by saying her previous host had the most original proof in over 300 years...
