The bills would have put her in a financial hole, Breton said - but a stranger came to her rescue. The woman, who has not been identified but felt an affinity toward Breton, paid the two towing bills.

Zuccala Towing charged Breton twice - once to tow her silver Mercedes and once to tow Mondesir's white Jaguar, which Breton purchased in her name.

I can't help thinking the money could have gone to a better person or group of people.

You do know that high end cars can last 30 years, right? Eventually they wind up down the range we'd call "cheap".

Well... High end cars that aren't BMW's. I see 70's era Mercedes all the time, but seeing a 70's era BMW was like the time I saw a Pinto. Just doesn't happen that often.

I'm not saying that's the case here, but don't assume that people with nice cars aren't stretched to their credit limit.

Abusive spouses or parents often give the abused gifts, fist assuage their own feelings and tighten the amount of control they have on the person.

Just collecting a paycheck and sliiiiiiiiiiiiding on by.... pissin` on the victim..... dat's how we roll.

As for the cars... doesn't exactly sounds like she really NEEDED the money.. however - since the years of the cars are not posted, they could very well be low priced cars. There are a LOT of Jags out there I would not take for free (unless I was allowed to immediately strip off a few parts and haul them to the crusher for a few fast bucks) because they are simply not worth anything as a running vehicle.. unless YOU know how to work on them. Or, want to convert the drive-train and know someone with the know-how.
As for the Mercedes... do not know much about them. Some are high priced, but as a rule the car lot dealers I know say they are over-priced, piles of ****.

Don't forget the woman probably has medical bills coming out of her ears by this point. So while no the towing may not have originally put her in the hole under a normal circumstance... these aren't normal circumstances.

Good Samaritan foots towing bills of woman burned in domestic attack in Boynton Beach

That was really nice of him to foot the bills, especially considering that usually the citizens of his town despise the citizens of her town so much.

Wait...the citizens of the two towns don't despise each other? There goes the point of the original "Good Samaritan" parable, then, doesn't it?

Sounds more like a generous guy who just wanted to help out.

If the Jag was purchased in her name, why not just sell it? No matter how little she get's for it that money can still be put to use paying (part of) the towing bill.

Looks like an X-type Jag, which if IRC is a Ford Mondeo in fancy clothing. Those were made between 2001 - 2009 so it's not going to sell for a lot of cash.

So a q&d check of KBB puts my rough guesstament on the price of both cars in the $45,000 range (fair condition is roughly 22,000/per car) So if you can own something of that value seems like the towing fees shouldn't be that much of a burden.

Although it is possible that this women had money falling out of her a$$hole prior to being set on fire, methinks that the hospital bills for being set on fire are probably gonna effect her financial, as HOSPITAL BILLS are the #1 reason folks declare bankruptcy, even when they have health insurance.

Cheap to acquire, expensive to maintain. $500 is a minor repair to either of those vehicles. Owning a luxury vehicle of any age is a bad decision for a person who can't stroke a $2000 check without complaining.

In addition, many people have very old Mercedeses (Mercedei?) that they likely got cheap, because they (especially the older ones) last forever. My grandfather still has one from the early 80s, I think.

They are quite ugly:

...no... if you RTFA, she has ONE car - a (probably older-model) Mercedes - and her ex-husband - the GUY WHO SET HER ON FIRE - bought an expensive Jaguar in her name (probably using her money to do it).

This is a chick who's been taken advantage of REPEATEDLY.

Guy uses her credit rating to buy a car she can't afford, and then she gets stuck with the towing bill (and knowing collections agencies, she's going to get stuck with the payments on it too, even after they repo it).

I know we hate poor people around here, especially black poor people, but think about her actual situation for a second?

2012-06-19 09:35:19 AM
Regardless of the car situation, it sucks to be her. I'm glad the lady helped out. I wasn't trying to start a flame war, but Jaguars and Mercedes are expensive to buy and maintain and at first I questioned exactly why someone who couldn't afford a $500 towing bill would have two luxury cars. As others have pointed out, it certainly looks like this women has been abused and part of the abuse is probably the financial control this guy has on her. Having said that, I still think it's not a good idea to own or lease cars like this, in general, unless you are making well into 6 figures. Hell, even the replacement parts are going to be expensive, not to mention the maintenance costs.

And yes hospital bills suck.

I hope she makes it out of this relationship, sells 'his' car, and gets back into financial shape. And I'm thankful there are kind people out there who help women out when they are in these types of horrible situations.

Nobody thinks about actual situations when they're pretending to be a hardass. If they had any character, they wouldn't be the sort of weak, pathetic men that take pleasure in the misfortunes of those worse off than themselves.

The Merc is an early-00s E-class, probably an E320 based on the trim. KBB gives a 2003 E320 a $11K for "good" condition, which based on the hood not closing properly seems fair.

For the 2008 X-type, in "very good condition" it says ~$16K... somehow 40% total below your estimate between the two.

We should change that to "good Somalian."

2012-06-19 12:47:37 PM
Older BMW's, Jags and Mercedes can be gotten very cheaply. I recall seeing an 8 to 10 year old BMW 850 going for under $15k, this was an $85k+ car when new. The problem is, while these are still very nice cars, the repair costs are so high that it kills the resale value. If you are handy with mechanics, you can pick up a beautiful used European luxury car for very little.

Northern Judea. They were secular Jews, and hence everyone hated them the way we hate atheists.

2012-06-19 08:06:44 PM
The towing business is odd. They essentially steal cars, then demand extortion to get the cars back.

Awhile back, I lived in a condo, with an apartment complex across the street. One night, around 2:00 or 3:00 AM, I saw two two trucks pull up and park. The drivers went and looked around in the parking lot. They got back into their tow trucks, backed in. They can apparently drop something down, back the tow truck up to a car they want to tow, hit a button that raises something in the back, and drive off, all without ever getting out of their tow trucks. They did that, and drove off fast. When they got to the corner, the second car that they were towing bounced off and came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. The tow trucks kept going.

When was the last time you lived paycheck to paycheck? Five grand is a lot to spend on a car if you can't throw down $500 for towing fees.
