I wonder what the friend was arrested for? Probably something embarrassing like violating farm animals.

I keep hitting delete while fark is on my screen, but it won't go away.

How could Sharyn Lemley fat finger the delete key? Nothing over there of much interest except the enter key. It takes deliberate sets of clicks and keystrokes to actually delete something. Guilty!

2003-11-11 11:14:16 AM
Huskadoodle: Absolutely guilty. For sensitive records, you'd think they also have umpteen warnings.

"Are you sure you want to permanently delete this record?"

OK

"You are about to permananently delete this record. Proceed?"

OK

'Paid administrative leave'

Where can I get me some of that?

"Probably something embarrassing like violating farm animals."

hehe, that's fun, I mean funny.

[On the phone]
Ed Rooney: Are you also aware, Mrs. Bueller, that Ferris does not have what we consider to be an exemplary attendance record?
Katie Bueller: I don't understand.
Ed Rooney: He has missed an unacceptable number of school days. In the opinion of this educator, Ferris is not taking his academic growth seriously. Now I've spent my morning examining his records. If Ferris thinks that he can just coast through this month and still graduate, he is sorely mistaken. I have no reservations whatsoever about holding him back another year.
Katie Bueller: This is all news to me.
Ed Rooney: It usually is. So far this semester he has been absent nine times.
Katie Bueller: Nine times?
Ed Rooney: Nine times.
Katie Bueller: I don't remember him being sick nine times.
Ed Rooney: That's probably because he wasn't sick. He was skipping school. Wake up and smell the coffee, Mrs. Bueller. It's a fool's paradise. He is just leading you down the primrose path.
Katie Bueller: I can't believe it.
Ed Rooney: I've got it right here in front of me. He has missed nine days --
[His computer screen begins counting down from nine to two. Ferris is at home looking at the same screen.]
Ferris: I asked for a car, I got a computer. How's that for being born under a bad sign?

Hey, if simply hitting the delete key can erase a criminal record they should through the programmer in jail.

2003-11-11 11:29:28 AM
DrunkenLimeybastard,

I hear that judges in the south get "Paid Administrative Leave" for violating the laws. I wish I could get some of that as well. You did something wrong, but not wrong enough to get your ass fired. Here, take a few weeks off while we sort his out and, don't worry, your direct deposits will continue to go through.

"they should through the programmer in jail"

Now that just makes no sense at all.

Angela: Just think about it. Our whole world is sitting there on a computer. It's in the computer, everything: your, your DMV records, your, your social security, your credit cards, your medical records. It's all right there. Everyone is stored in there. It's like this little electronic shadow on each and everyone of us, just, just begging for someone to screw with, and you know what? They've done it to me, and you know what? They're gonna do it to you.

I wonder what the going rate is for getting a record deleted? I figure that pot bust over the course of 30 years has probably cost me hundreds of thousands in lost wages & opportunities. Actually the past 15 years or so is the worst, since it's only that recently that the information has been easily available to much of anyone. I bet somebody with a serious record might pony up lots of cash to get a record deleted or altered these days. Maybe aleration / deletion or electronic records is the birth of a new major criminal MO??? We can always hope.

2003-11-11 12:20:50 PM
I can't believe that it's that easy to delete an entire criminal record by just hitting the delete key. Aren't the records backed up somewhere?

Maybe she just thought that hitting delete would erase the record and the article just didn't explain it correctly. I dunno.

I think that most people would be smart enough to realize that you can't delete someones history, be it criminal, credit, education, or whatever, just by hitting the delete key.

Then again, maybe not.

2003-11-11 12:21:26 PM
Beaters - Wow. That is the saddest thing I've heard in a while. If that isn't an argument for legalization, I don't know what is. All those lost opportunities for what? A fairly harmless little plant.

dammit.

2003-11-11 12:26:00 PM
I have to imagine that to keep criminal records in Connecticut they use some early eighties dos based software in which delete actually meant something and MS had not invented/stolen the wastebasket yet.

How did they catch her?

2003-11-11 12:45:04 PM
Oliver Wendell Jones did the same thing for his father. Except it was the IRS computer. And when he deleted his father's file, his father ceased to be.

We need to ask ourselves whatwent wrong with this caper. She made the same mistake that could get YOU five-to-10 at Con College - she made no effort to cover her tracks.

How could she have covered her tracks? Instead of deleting just the record of someone she knew, she should have deleted a huge horkin' block of them that just happens to contain her friend's record.

That would be much easier to pawn off as an innocent mistake, and nobody would have said a word. Do you think the cops would want it made public knowledge that a few hundred criminal records just disappeared?

This concludes today's edition of American Draka's Crime Tips for Young Crooks. Remember kids, it's only illegal if you get caught!

2003-11-11 02:47:24 PM

But in all seriousness, they SHOULD have backups, multiple ones at that. If not, the IT department there sucks balls, and shouldn't be trusted to set up a friggin' Playstation.

I used to work in the IT for a county court way down in South Florida. I hated it! I had moral issues with working for The Man, it was a 45 minute commute (one-way) from Ft Myers, the pay was peanuts, and I had to work with a bunch of dicks. Oh, and I had to wear a frigging tie. A tie! I worked in a darkened room away from the public, and I had to wear a tie. Funk dat!

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Geez. I shouldn't read stuff like that when I'm high.

2003-11-11 10:22:16 PM
Lemley told detectives she accidentally "struck the delete key on her computer while (her friend's) files were on the screen,"

Wish I had a friend like that. She should get the tag for (albeit misguided) acts of friendship.

2003-11-11 10:24:29 PM
Apparently there is a backup or she wouldn't have been caught.

I think those systems are designed with opt out protection that goes something like this...

You have deleted 1 record. Other records will be deleted until you hit the delete key again at which point the next selected record will be deleted. >

2003-11-12 12:17:05 AM
I think "my dog ate it" would have been more believable.
