There is a Harvard professor (naturally) who thinks that pedophiles are no worse than alcoholics and needed to be deal with as such, i.e. no prison, just councelling(sp).

He also said that pedophiles were 'born this way' and shouldn't be treated or held in contempt by society for being the way Nature made them.

I know this because I saw him interviewed on PBS 7-8 years ago.

I have a feeling that he's right on that point, but horribly wrong on his broader view. Even if they're born the way that they are, it doesn't really matter. Psychopaths are born the way that they are too, and the behavior caused by their abnormal brain structure and chemical composition is so destructive, and the treatment for their condition so absent, that you can't do anything but put them away for as long as you can. Same with pedophiles, they annihilate the lives of the most vulnerable people, and unfortunately there is just no cure save for the stone and iron of jail, or the chill of the grave.

/And as farked up as it is, even chemical castration isn't 100% effective

I personally am more upset that everyone who covered up for Sandusky is not currently in jail or out on bond at this moment. It's not good enough to focus solely on the perpetrators of crimes; their enablers must be dealt with as well.

Timmy the Tumor: He's actually taking the stand in his own defense?

Oh man, that'll be amazing. This guy slips up more than Joe Biden, his own defense attorneys will be asking for the death penalty by the time he's done to minimize the damages.

He is a classic, textbook narcissist. He can not understand that he can't explain his way out of this. He doesn't get that the world will not fall in love with him as soon as he starts talking. He can not see how taking the stand is a bad thing. He has no concept of how badly he is going to lose this case.

His lawyer couldn't keep him off. And yes, it will be exactly that lulzy.

I'll go a step further. Sandusky is sick. Whether it's biological or psychological (or a combination of the two), he has serious problems and an uncontrollable urge that cannot be cured.

Dottie Sandusky, however, can't say that. According to the grand jury report and the testimony at the trial, she was upstairs in their house while one of the victims (#4 I think) was SCREAMING for her to help, and she did nothing. She also walked in on Jerry with a kid at a hotel, and she turned a blind eye.

Whatever Jerry gets, she deserves to do serious jail time as well.

This.

Strictly speaking, being a pedophile/hebephile/ephebophile is just a "thought crime" thing. It's acting on those impulses, however, that is an issue; if someone were a *phile and never touched a child it would be one thing.

In this, it differs from alcoholism greatly. Alcoholics don't go to prison for being alcoholics, they go to prison for doing illegal shiat (while drunk). Similarly, if these guys wanna sit around all day and think about underagers, go for it; touch one, though, and get ready for the slammer.

Insanity defense, they cant fight the evidence so they fight the verdict. Dont laugh, dont even farking blink. If we are just getting a small taste of the horror that the jury is they may agree with the defense and say he's too farked up to send to prison. I can think of one thing only that the defense is fighting that they may have them resulting to such drastic measures. its not the witnesses, its not the dozens of victims, none of that. I'm guessing the cops found tapes and pics, a farking mountain of it, probably so much that we will never learn just how farked up this guy was. But the jury is finding out. Lawyers are throwing a hail Mary. Think it cant land? Do you not pay attention to judicial circuses in this country?

Costas doesn't want THAT kind of publicity. After all, it IS a family show. And it's not like Costas is a journalist.

He's not an editor. Someone above him chose to edit out that part of the interview, and it's probably a good thing he/she did. Now the prosecution can use it.

It's also possible that Sandusky's vocal inflections somehow made it sound less damning.

I'm not quite sure how he managed to reconcile the first part of the statement with the second point.

Because it happened so often it became "usual."

From 5th grade on to the 12th grade I was always in some combination of football, basketball, track or cross-country. If a coach of mine *ever* went into the locker room when changing was going on, it was to deliver/collect towels or jock-straps or to deliver a chewing-out for something. In all those years and at different schools I have *never* had a coach who stripped down and hopped into the shower with the kids. Never.

THIS. Showering in a common locker room at the Y while ignoring eachother is fine. Other than that, there is no farking reason at all for an adult to shower with an unrelated child. Certainly no coach should ever shower with youth players. If for no other reason than it looks bad.

As my mentally ill brother has been taught all his adult life and lives by: Mental illness is not an excuse for bad behavior.

So, to have the urges? Mental illness. Treatment. To act on them? Crime. Jail.

Just as when the alchoholic crosses the line from drunk behavior to criminal behavior while drunk (ie drunk drives and kills a family), they go from needing rehab to needing jail.

Of course you have those who are so insane and divorced from reality that they can't tell right from wrong (Andrea Yates) but that is not this guy. Although I would be okay with him spending the rest of his life in a secure facility for the criminally insane, as is Ms Yates.

ialdabaoth: ... you're trying to imply that "pedophile" isn't synonymous with "child molester"?

So, how many precious babies do YOU rape each day?

I'm not implying; I'm stating flatly.

Pedophilia is a clinical term with a very specific meaning that has been co-opted by the laity for use as a catch-all.

Pedophilia: sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children.
Hebephilia: sexual attraction to pubescent children.
Ephebophilia: sexual attraction to post-pubescent children.
Teleiophilia: sexual attraction to adults (you know, "normal").

Child molester: one who sexually assaults children.

See the difference? One is a attitude, the other is an action.

You may not like it, but I like to speak clearly, so I make the differentiation between belief and behavior.
