theknuckler_33: As someone who makes almost exactly $75k, allow me to state unequivicolly that the headline is complete BS.

My experience (also earned about 75k last year minus the bonus which I gave to charity) was that the headline was very accurate. When I was making 40k, I would have taken a worse job if it paid better. Now, even though I can easily get jobs that would boost my pay by 20k or more, I don't even consider them because I like the job I do and the work environment I have. Buying a house wasn't even that hard - I got as much house as I reasonably could use, even if I do get married / have a kid or two.

I make more now, but all the extra's probably just going to go to more charitable giving. I have all that I need, and getting more wouldn't really make things better.

is upside down. What if exercising creativity and empathy enables me to fulfill the "needs" near the bottom of the triangle? It's sort of a pet philosophy of mine that keeping money from being my main priority is the most important and everything else seems to take care of itself.

I don't make $75k, would be nice, but I am right on what I feel is the edge of what is comfortable where I don't have to check my bank account every time I need to pay a bill or go to the store. It's not just one less thing to worry about, it's the thing to worry about because it is the source of your physical and emotional security. If you're just barely making enough to get by, you're always kept on edge juggling bills and living expenses. There's no way you can relax like that.

I've always wondered why anyone past a certain amount of wealth still bothers to go to work - particularly if that work is mostly picking stocks. It seems that if I ever had enough money to be comfortably set for life, I'd just retire and have fun. Probably well before that unless I was under 30. What motivates a billionaire to work 12 hour days?

Absolutely. You hiring?

In one year I went from an 18k family income to an 80k family income. We were very happy on very little, we don't need a lot of toys and don't need to get out much to have fun. Most of the higher income goes into the bank and we still live on very little. What really, really makes me happy though, is the thought that if the money goes away suddenly, nothing really really bad will happen to my family in the time it will take to reestablish ourselves at the 18k threshold. That knowledge is priceless.

Force is short-term. Art and literature are long-term. The Carthaginians were badasses in their day, but they left practically no art or literature for the future to judge them by. Same with the Hittites and the Mongols. So: Modern America has created so much art and literature that some people hundreds of years from now will say, "Why is it that modern writers can't create stuff as good as season 3 of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'? Or draw cartoons as insightful as 'Doonesbury'?" Maybe hyperbole, but ol' Bill Shakespeare was writing popular entertainment, after all....
