She really got down to brass tacks, consequences be damned.

"They, I guess, are being friendly," she said, "but I don't want to come home and entertain people I don't know."

Maybe you should build a fence?

My first thought as well.
She's gonna need to move.

Lord knows the LAST thing we need in this country is friendly people.

Move.

See, I read the first three lines of this headline and thought that this would be about something else.

And as the sheriff's office seems unlikely to file charges, I'm not going to name the woman or her husband, or even tell much about them except that she has a job in which a reputation for being honest and law abiding would be important.

Do it, so people can be even louder. I would include the use of a megaphone right behind her house.

2012-06-18 01:46:31 PM
The way the article is written it sounds like she will be getting laundry detergent in her pool by the weekend.

2012-06-18 01:51:55 PM
Why was the husband purchasing carpet tacks just before the incident?

I second laundry detergent in their pool this weekend.

pisceandreamer: Lord knows the LAST thing we need in this country is friendly people.

I know it's shocking and all, but why should she have to be friendly to EVERYONE on the trail that wants to be friendly to her?

Look at it another way...for the biker saying 'hi' and making conversation about an owl is having a singular encounter with the woman, but the woman is having tens if not hundreds of those encounters on a daily or weekly basis.

Take it from me...if you're an introverted person, that wears badly on you and all you want is for the people to shut up and go away.

/doing it with tacks or debris is wrong, but I get where they're coming from

2012-06-18 02:47:25 PM
I guess she got her point across

/FWIW the trail essentially moved in very recently

I won't tell you his/her name, but I will describe in detail where their house is located and that it has a pool (and palm fronds) you can see from the trail

Maybe she should take a different tack to resolving her issues

Your not gonna pin it on her

And, she said, some bikers totally ignore the speed limits. They could hit people, including her, or her dogs when she is close by or is using the trail herself.

Ahh, I've seen her type. Takes the dogs off leash (illegally), complains when bikers have to swerve to avoid them.

As has been said, do it with a fence.

Why wouldn't they string piano wire? Oh yeah, Florida...

2012-06-18 04:06:07 PM
Roofing nails on the road ought to help.

2012-06-18 04:06:29 PM
1. Take strong magnets, attach to piece of wood (1x4 or 1x2). Ensure even distribution.
2. Drag or carry bar down bike path, approximately 1" above ground.
3. Collect tacks from magnets. Be careful not to hurt your hands.
4. Hurl tacks into pool from path at opportune moment.

Or, she's one of those asshats with the 30 foot leash where she stands on one side of the trail while the dog is shiatting in the bushes on the other side and manages to block the entire thing.

Then you could just smile and not engage the parties who are trying to talk to you.

Or you could, I don't know, build a fence?

Sometimes you just have to drop your tack.

2012-06-18 04:09:34 PM
Typical bikers.. They can't even avoid tacks in their own designated path yet they expect to be taken seriously out on real roads when they're in our way.

Yes, although in fairness bike path speed limits are stupidly slow. How would pedestrians feel if they were only permitted to walk 2 mph on the sidewalk. That's how cyclists feel when limited to 5 or 10 mph.

2012-06-18 04:10:47 PM
To all the people crying that she should just build a fence:

What if she can't? This is Florida. Which likely means HOA. Which likely means heavy fines if she tries to build an unapproved fencing structure.

2012-06-18 04:11:51 PM
Well, thanks to officer good jerb lou, she's going to feel like she got away with it and do so again. That much is obvious.

FL has a stand your ground law. Someone should hide in the bushes at night and wait for the tack flinger to strike again. Just make sure to yell "shes coming straight for me" and fire away. Problem solved. Tacks are deadly in the right hands after all. Death by a thousand cuts and stuff.

Or walking three, four, even five abreast and blocking the whole thing.

Bonus points for getting super annoyed when you ring your "ding ding" bell at them.

If she has a pool, shes already supposed to have a fence of a certain height.

Also...

"They could hit people, including her, or her dogs when she is close by or is using the trail herself."

Then she needs to STFU.

Having been to Sarasota several times, I've found that many of the residents have worked and saved their whole lives to move down to Florida and find things to complain about.

Tacks go awaythats only a temporary fix. Plant puncture vines next to bike paths for great justice and a permanent fix.

It was tacky, but the bikers got the point.

Exactly. It's friendly until it's the 100th one of the day.

Just like as a tall person, "how's the weather up there?" is tolerable and you might even fake laugh for them once...but when a bunch of people feel the need to say it every damn day, you want to start choking every single one of them.

1) Sure, just pay $5,000 for the environmental impact study and wait for no fewer than 36 months for it to complete. Then planning can begin on how tall your fence can be and the width of the individual planks.
2) This is how she is "living with it."
3) She should move because of a bike path that was there AFTER she purchased her home?
