I bet they have a tough time at the paint store.

In other words, they're vampires?

De Vries never wrote about four-coned women again

More's the pity.

I know their names.

Probably the same biatches who see 50 shades of grey.

Homosexuals. They usually end up as interior designers saying how the fossil butte just CLASHES with the star dust.

Octarine has always been my favorite.

De Vries never wrote about four-coned women again.

Fortunately there's my new book, The Four Coned Women and the Temple of Boinkage available on Amazon to fill this gap.

oneodd1: I thought 10^3 was 1000.

It's supposed to be 100^3, not 10^03. Proofreading fail for the author.

Interesting article, though.

Ahhh. That would explain the errant 0 in the superscript.

Thanks yat!

Hey guys, I just discovered that women have a fourth cone.

That's totally cool. Color theory has fascinated me since I was very young.

is this about women, and the 1000 names for the color pink?

2012-06-18 03:57:39 PM
So my daughters could possibly see more colors than a regular person. Too bad I don't plan on having kids.

Ehl oh ehl:

XKCD: Here are the color names most disproportionately popular among men:

Penis
Gay
WTF
Dunno
Baige

I ... that's not my typo in #5-the only actual color in the list really is a misspelling of "beige". And keep in mind, this is based on the number of unique people who answered the color, not the number of times they typed it. This isn't just the effect of a couple spammers. In fact, this is after the spamfilter.

I weep for my gender.

I would not say following the Greatful Dead or living in bat country as living among us.

I wonder if there is an over-representation of this type of visual ability in fashion or cosmetics type jobs. Not necessarily models, per se, but the designers and makers of new clothing designs or lipstick color. And I wonder if it's possible for this type of visual ability to be present in men, just possibly to a lower degree, since color-blindness does occur in women even if it's in a lower percentage of women.

I always thought I was nuts, or it was an after effect of the acid. I love late evening after all the reds have been filtered out and you can see the ultraviolet. It's especially noticeable on flowers.

2012-06-18 04:31:54 PM
So... they can see octarine?

Mildly cool. Not as spiffy as if they found someone with one of the UV-sensing pigment cones that birds use.

Hm. I wonder if anyone will ever create a GMO pentachromal human.

Read about this a few months ago in some book. Looked up the original research papers. They weren't very convinced that tetrachromes actually existed, but a few books reported it as true. If they've only found one person so far, then it's pretty rare. The book stated that it could be like 20% of women, which is obviously not true.

I only need to see 3 colors to survive

black, white, and pink

ok maybe brown

I remember watching a video on pot and this like DEA agent who goes and looks for crops sees something like 30+ shades of green which is more than the normal human, so he can spot pot growing in forests and thick brush.

It was interesting, and sad... so sad that he found those plants.

I bet he finds it through informants and such and just has everyone convinced that he's got super powers. He's Psych, but for the DEA instead of for the Santa Barbara PD.

All I know is I'm not colorblind but I have what is known as "anomalous trichromacy", where one cone is shifted slightly compared to the rest of the population.

I think my green opsin isn't as green as it could be.

My eyes seem to see colors differently than one another. Righty is dull, and greyer, and lefty is vivid, and vibrant.
